Can't say I agree. I just don't see it with Witts.

Admittedly it's what he can be rather than what he is. But statistically (our eyes clearly disagree so I'll fall back on stats) he's already above average in a number of metrics for a ruckman. 41% hitout win rate, 11% hitout to advantage rate. 210cm ex-basketballer that's statistically improving in every area of the game every single year. His numbers are very similar and even better than Sandilands' at the same age, too (whoops, image ended up much larger than expected):

Are people forgetting that Dahl essentially kicked the winning goal in our most important win of the season? Yes, Easton Woods boot touched it as it went over the line but if he chooses to shephard there, the goal goes to Dahl. Luke is amazing at snapping goals out of nowhere with absolutely no time and space. He can manufacture a close quarters kick faster than anyone in the comp and instinctively finds the goals. His set shots are admittedly terrible but his strengths massively outweigh his weaknesses.

A bit has been said about the shortcomings of our two new defensive pillars when in possession.

Clearly it is an area that needs improvement, but even skilled players are expected to make errors in their first couple of games while they adjust to the speed and attrition of AFL football.

Here are some stats from the weekend that give an indication of why we may have drafted these guys.

Marcs (error intended) Adams –

8 marks. At least 4 intercept & 2 contested.

If this guy gets up and running I can see Jack Riewoldt storming of the MCG halfway through a 3rd quarter and hiding behind a car somewhere because Adams and Wood have absorbed every single aerial entry to that point in time. Reads it so well and times his jumps to perfection.

Kieran Collins –

4 tackles and 5 one percenters.

Reminds me of Morris & the scragger defenders of old like Kretiuk and Southern who hated getting beaten and never gave up. He seems to have good defensive awareness and stays in contests.

Yes this is a very optimistic post but I think we have reason to be with what we have seen from these guys. They seem to have picked up our structures quite well, quite quickly which is a credit to them and the coaching staff.

Good post TBOW. Too many people are looking at assessing players by conventional measures like the quality of their kicks rather than looking at the "new age" impact of modern footy.

Modern footy is all about getting intercepts as close to your own goal as possible, as well as attacking quickly (not giving time for the opposition to flood back) from such intercepts. This can be done through high pressing up the ground and zonal defence. This defensive system works for more athletic players who can cover the ground well and read the play, then turn defence into attack quickly, even if their "traditional" defensive skills are poor. It's why Wood was an All-Australian.

Marcus Adams is a player for modern footy, not a player for old-fashioned footy. He might not be a great kick, and he might be undersized to play a traditional key defensive post and not nimble and agile enough to play on forward flankers or smaller forwards, but he's a player for modern defensive footy. He reads the play well. He's a strong intercept mark. He's athletic in the sense he's a good runner, and can cover ground well in a zonal defensive system. He can occasionally match up one-out if required against smaller and bigger forwards here and there if the zone defence requires is and we don't manage to defend with a 2-on-1. He has natural attacking instincts having played last year and his junior career as a CHF.

By most conventional measured, he has many flaws in his game (and there are times where those flaws will be exposed, that's why he was drafted as late as he was after all). But we play innovative, modern footy with our defensive system that Adams' strengths fit perfectly in.

He was mediocre as a forward at WAFL level or excellent as an intercepting defender. I'd prefer we play him to his strengths.
He's quick enough to allow us to play him on the mid-tall types which means we can play two other genuine talls and not sacrifice our speed - that could be important.
Zaine Cordy is quick for his height and can use the ball well, Hamling quick so we could partner Adams with 1-2 other talls and leave Collins in the last line as the dour hard as nails tall defender we've always seemed to love at WO

Yep, no harm in giving him some forward practice (Bev does love his versatility) but some people are just great at reading the ball defensively and atrocious at the other end. I was one, albeit at a much, much, much, much lower level.

Lake up fwd wasn't that bad. Remember a few games where he ended up kicking a few. Obvs far better as a defender though.

I'd like to see us experiment with Collins/Adams at FF. If one of them worked out we could trade Boyd for Michael Hurley at the end of this year. The bombers will go with it because they are looking to start their rebuild with younger players and we can free up a lot of cap space if we offload the Boyd contract.

I can't read the article but I imagine clubs like Hawthorn, GWS, NM, would have both the interest and the cap to possibly get him. Maybe Freo if they don't land Hooker.

No doubt we would have inquired but 900k is too much. I was hoping it would be 650k a season.
