There was no high contact. The action looked to be perfectly within the rules. It looks bad because Duncan was in a vulnerable position and mummy is a monster. But essentially it was a tackle, no more, no less. There was no duty of care here, it was one footballer tackling another.

Did he spend the rest of the game off the ground with broken ribs then ?

Apparently at one stage Del Santo asked Nahas to stop brushing his leg with his hand, he was horrified when he looked across to see Nahas leaning back with both hands behind his head.

Why do both parties need to suffer injury for it to be fair?
Sometimes one can come off worse than the other.

Spot on. Easily the worst 38 possession game ever witnessed. I said it during the game, it was embarrassing that the men he is supposedly leading felt they had to go out of their way to give him a pity possession.
As a coach, I don't mind the tactic, I sometimes use it if I have a guy coming back from injury, or a good player a little down on confidence. Get them a nice easy touch early to build belief. But I'll have a quiet word with one or two ball getters to do it early in the game. NOT the entire team for the entire game. It was a bad look for the captain of a footy club...

Absolutely, I agree with the tactic for perhaps the first qtr or so. By that time you'd hope that it had built his confidence and he can get on with the game. But it didn't, he just kept getting the easy kick for whole match and went nowhere. Wasn't like he was delivering the ball cleanly either. He was going at what, 68% or so? Not a good effort by all parties involved.

i thought i saw the same thing as you...just havent commented as i wasnt sure if i was looking at it with rose coloured glasses. i think its made to look worse cos of his hair style flapping around.
then when shown in slow mo it makes it look worse too.

i agree with you. looked to me like he was avoiding having his head hit...if it were a bad fake he would have carried on like a soccer player...in which he didnt!

i watched 360 last night....and the way robbo carried on about it was school yard nonsense.... why hasn't he pointed other players out? obvious he was looking for something to deflect from real issues in the game. i can think of heaps of players that continuously try to milk free kicks...worse offenders for me are thomas (nth m), darling, j selwood & shuey....flogs! they continuously do it but i dont see them on robbo's agenda! gutless ponce!
i would love robbo to take the field and play against all the players that he's pee'd off and let them have a fair crack at him for what he's written over the years... pretty obvious he'd be flailing around more so than bb!

And the fact he tried to push the arm away implies avoiding the tackle as well as actually getting the handpass away and not just welcoming the contact and pushing the opponents arm up to make it a high tackle. He's clearly pushing it away. It may be a skillful technique he has we just haven't seen other players do

Whilst his response "Asked whether he felt Boekhorst had staged for a free kick, Bolton said: "Make your own assessment on that." might suggest he did not express an opinion, he did.

The only conclusion from this:
"It hasn't been a trend in our game. It's not going to be a trend because we don't want to be a team that goes into that area," Bolton said on Wednesday.

"We've had a reminder, but it's not a trend. It's the first time I've noticed it and it's only been brought to my attention in the media.

"It's been spoken about, a brief comment. I wouldn't think you'll see it from Carlton players."

is unambiguous.

Staging for free kicks is cheating. The job of umpires is hard enough without having to second guess player responses. IMO there should be a rule that penalises any player who has staged for a free kick and tricked the umpire into awarding the free. A first up penalty should be a hefty fine. A second time penalty should be a 1 match suspension. A third time penalty should be a 3 match suspension. A fourth time penalty should be a 6 match suspension, a fifth time penalty should be a 12 match suspension, a sixth time penalty should be a season, a seventh time should be life.

A player who is awarded a free kick as a result of staging should be permitted (as a way of avoiding penalty) to advise the umpire immediately that a mistake has been made in which case the umpire shall reverse the free kick.

Under these rules I would have cited Murphy when he "dived" on the forward line and was given a free kick for in the back against, I think, Menadue. In this instance, maybe Menadue fell into Murphy's back but if he did so it was after Murphy dived and I have no doubt as to why Murphy dived. So, even though a subsequent free kick was arguably deserved, Murphy staged for the free and his staging contributed to him getting the free making him, at least arguably, guilty.

As I see it from the replay, particularly the last slo mo of it, Mummy jumped into Duncan and, as he did so went slightly side on to his left side with his arm down. Duncan was in a vulnerable position. Mummy as a player had to collide with Duncan in order to stop him from simply running off with the ball. There was a collision. There was no tackle. I think Mummy got off because in the circumstances there was little else he could do realistically. Jumping as he did and going slightly side on were done more to protect himself than injure Duncan. And there is no indication Duncan was more injured by being jumped into or Mummy being slightly turned.

There was a duty of care but in the circumstances Mummy did what a reasonable footballer would do, protect himself and hope for the best for Duncan. Right result. To protect himself Duncan should have known not to take possession of the ball. Presumably he was concentrating on the ball rather than the opposition (to his credit) but lack of awareness of what is coming is will always get a player in trouble. Had he taken the time to assess his options he might have tapped the ball over Mummy in which case Mummy might have had an obligation to avoid or minimise the collision.

It looked to me as though mummy half wrapped his arms around Duncan, that's why I said "tackle", but you're certainly correct, there wasn't much else he could do, other than pulverise Duncan...
Not sure if I'm correct in saying this, but it did appear that mummy did his best to "minimise the damage" when Duncan hit the ground. He seemed to make sure he didn't land on him with force, almost "protecting" Duncan. Let's face it, mummy could've killed him.

Hardly newsworthy given that a handle from each side do it in any given game.
It'd be great if the powers that be started sitting out blokes who do it, it's honestly pathetic.
