From the players out of contract thread https://www.bigfooty.com/forum/threads/players-out-of-contract-2016.1118711/

The best ones available would be Darcy Gardiner, Nathan Brown (free agent), Jayden Laverde, Michael Hibberd, Michael Barlow, Ed Langdon, Chris Mayne (free agent), Shane Kersten, Jaeger O'Meara, Dion Prestia, Caleb Marchbank, Jack Steele, Tom Mitchell, Tom Lamb and Nathan Hrovat

That's now down to 15 players.

FWIW and highly unlikely it would ever happen and I don't know if it is something the club even has on its radar, but Lachie Whitfield, yes, I would like him a lot at North. Or Josh Kelly (shakes fist at sky)

Now Sam Mayes may leave the lions.

BRISBANE Lions could be left with just one recontracted top-20 pick on its list with Sam Mayes’ future undecided.

The Lions will not comment on contract talks this season in the wake of the circus which surrounded James Aish’s departure last year, but there are concerns Mayes will return to South Australia.

Mayes, 21, would become the eighth prized draftee to walk from the Gabba in the past four seasons, which could prompt Brisbane to again put its hand up for a priority draft selection.

The Lions’ list holds just four top-20 picks, while GWS boasts 23 and Richmond 18.

Two of those prized Lions — No. 2 pick Josh Schache and local product Eric Hipwood — are in their first season but are not considered flight risks.

Under chief executive Greg Swann and list manager Peter Schwab the Lions re-signed 11 players plus coach Justin Leppitsch over summer to show it is on the right track.

The Lions also made some shrewd moves at the trade table, bringing in Ryan Bastinac, Josh Walker and Tom Bell.

But the lack of gun kids could again present a compelling argument for emergency draft assistance, even if the Lions believe the AFL did not seriously consider last year’s submission.

Mayes inquired about a trade home in October and was linked to Port Adelaide.

The Lions instead held him to his 2016 contract.

Mayes’ manager Michael Doughty, of Elite Sports Properties, said he was happier this season and had purchased a house in Brisbane.

“I don’t think he plans on moving at the moment, but footy can change pretty quickly,” Doughty said.

The Lions are making inroads in their culture change with players enjoying the addition of welfare managers Craig and Melissa Lambert.

Mayes has officially put contract talks on hold until mid-season.

But if the skilful wingman’s form doesn’t improve there is no guarantee Brisbane will offer a fresh deal.

Mayes enjoyed consecutive top-10 finishes in Brisbane’s best-and-fairest after he was taken at No. 8 in the 2012 draft, but has since struggled.

He is averaging just 13 possessions this season and has won just five contested disposals in three games.

His inability to win inside ball goes to the heart of Brisbane’s on-field woes.

Champion Data said the Lions have lost the contested ball count in 102 of their past 135 matches and they are ranked dead last again this season.

Their average differential this season is -25.7 but Leppitsch did bring in Bastinac, Ben Keays and midfield wrecking bal Rhys Mathieson to try and arrest the trend.

The Lions are close to re-signing academy product Liam Dawson but deals put to Rising Star Lewy Taylor and small forward Josh Green were reportedly knocked back.

Some very good players on this list.

Outside of the top liners on the list Jake Lloyd is one that might get squeezed out.

Some good names there, some spuds, some who are cooked and some who are probably not the right type.

Looking at players who may be realistically gettable, Harley, Hooker, Whitfield, Spurr and Prestia are the one's I'd be making a play for. O'Meara obviously if his knee is right. I'd add Tom McDonald if Hooker or Hurley go off the market.

I stopped reading when I saw the spudliest spud Marley Williams on the list.

Yeah the home state thing will likely win out.

Freo don't have a great track record in landing big fish and we can point to our trio of very successful free agents as proof a mid career switch at North pays off.

But yes, if Hooker has decided he'll go home, not much we can do about it.

Cale Hooker could forgo $1 million or more if he decides to stay at Essendon

CALE Hooker would forgo $1 million — and possibly more — if he rejects offers from rival clubs and stays at Essendon.

Fremantle, Hawthorn and North Melbourne headline a group of clubs chasing the suspended Bomber.

The Dockers are believed to have tabled a five-year deal at an estimated $800,000 for Hooker, although Essendon sources believe it could be has much as $1 million a season over six seasons.

All the clubs interested in the All-Australian defender have indicated at least a five-year deal will be offered.

The Bombers, however, are prepared to only offer a four-year deal at about $750,000 per season.

The potential for performance triggers for a fifth season at Essendon has not officially been put forward to Hooker’s management, although the Bombers look sure to bring that chip to the bargaining table

v1

It means the guaranteed money for Hooker if he signs with the Dockers, for example, is $4m.

The guaranteed money from Essendon is $3m and Hooker would have to wait until after 2020 — when he will be 32 — to learn if the Bombers would shell out an extra season.

Neither Hooker’s manager Tom Petroro Essendon officials would comment on Friday.

Hooker is training with his suspended teammates up to three times a week under the eye fitness coach David Buttifant.

He leaves for America later this month, where he will spend time with several US professional sports teams.

He is expected to make a decision on his football future when he returns.

He could walk to Fremantle or the Hawks or any club as an unrestricted free agent, meaning the Bombers won’t be in a position to match any offer. They wouldn’t anyway.

They are not prepared to table a five-year deal, remembering long-term deals, such as Mark Mercuri’s five years, which did not deliver good value.

If Hooker did leave, the Bombers would expect pick No.2 or No.3 as compensation.

The club has repeatedly said it’s confident all 12 suspended players will recommit to the Bombers, but also acknowledge they have to convince the group to stay.

Heath Hocking has announced he will return, while Travis Colyer, ruckman Tom Bellchambers and future captain Dyson Heppell have indicated, or their managers have, their future is at the Bombers.

Last year’s skipper Jobe Watson, All-Australian defender Michael Hurley and Hooker are the three key signings yet to indicate where their future lies.

Recent TV reports that Hurley had stopped training with Buttifant, signalling an intent to look elsewhere, were incorrect.

The suspended players have met coach John Worsfold socially and are said to be enthused with Worsfold’s direction, honesty and attitude towards them.
