Ridiculous assertion!I'm sure Scarlett himself would respect the defensive tactical set ups Lloyd learned under Lyon. Scarlett is obviously doing well but line coaches, are simply line coaches, and modern defence is about team defence, whole ground defence, and that requires the kind of deep knowledge of defensive systems that Lloyd would've learned under Lyon. To say Lloyd is having no say in tactics or game-plan is preposterous and ultimately complete nonsense.
Scarlett to Lloyd: You worry about your text-books and spread-sheets and I'll worry about turning our back 6 into the meanest defence in the comp. Now get the f*** out of my way!!Scarlett has openly stated numerous times that he has, basically, contempt for a lot of opponents. Robert Harvey was a prime example. This isn't a guy who just fawns over opponents because they have had success or can play the game. On the available evidence of the sort of things he's said about opposition sides and players over the years, I doubt he'd have a skerrick of respect for anything Lyon's done, because he hasn't won anything.
Um! He is a premiership coach who has maintained the best win/loss record for a number of years you know.Like any individual footballer does, I truly believe Chris is improving as a coach over time from a good mix of experience, failure and insight from others. Good work!

Of course coaches improve with experience. That applies equally to someone like Alistair Clarkson too. Helps considerably when you have a strong on-field leadership group comprising many who have the capacity to impact games too.
Don't be ridiculous, I'm not saying that? I'm saying he didn't value them in his system as much as other coaches did.
Sure, it has a role to play in it but so do our systems, that's all I'm saying and I'm sorry if you got the impression I was saying it's ALL the coaches. However my main point with what I said was that even when we had a strong team under Scott in 2011,12,13,14 and we were making the top 4 there were certain trends in our system you can see through the stats, these have changed completely with the arrival of Lloyd and I'm just trying to show that we have significantly changed the way we play since his arrival, as well as improved our playing list. All of it combined is helping our rise up the ladder and it is by no means the arrival of one individual that has completely turned our fortunes around alone, but it's still been of some significance and important in our turnaround.
He's a top coach with an impressive record and we should be pleased Cooky and his crew picked him.
Thread exhausted!
Been a long time observer but have barely posted but...
All of you that said Scott can't coach etc can get stuffed.
The bloke didn't trip and fall into being a premiership coach and has managed the transition from 2011 team to 2016 better than any coach in the Comp. to borrow a quote from bomber Thompson...
"For some silly reason, you people want to assassinate him. It's just rubbish. You people, all of you, ALL OF YOU, leave him alone!"
Wow you really don't get football do you. It's staggering how little you understand the game.Sure, it has a role to play in it but so do our systems, that's all I'm saying and I'm sorry if you got the impression I was saying it's ALL the coaches. That or it is in fact Mrs.Lloyd we are talking to.Wow you really don't get football do you. It's staggering how little you understand the game.
I've read a lot of your posts and don't recall having a problem with any in particular. Haven't agreed with all of them, but you seem to have the right passion and put them across concisely without grandstanding. Most others are like this, except ........I'll gladly put my hand up to one making those calls, yet at the same time I'll openly admit that I was wrong.
I've read the last 5 pages of this thread and I've shaken my head at one particular poster who refuses to do the same... never mind.
In my defence, part of the reason for my original criticisms were his inability to revert back to that 2011 system, and the reasons why we appeared lazy, lacklustre, selfish and undisciplined. That's all changed again for whatever reasons, whether fitness, personnel or something else was the reason for the change I'm not sure, but we're back to the way we played when he first took over the coaching job and it's a really good sign and a positive move for the club moving forward.
This game style will stand up in finals it's only a matter now of getting the balance between youth and experience right but we're on the right path.
And you have proof of this? The reason Llyod came to Geelong was to learn of Scott .
383 Pages and mostly negative BS about our coach...if we win the flag will mods Close this thread

Attitude as a player and as a coach are different lets hope and nothing to suggest it would extend to coaches either. While I dislike Lyon as much as the next cats fan (he has coached two of our biggest recent rivals) he is clearly a good coach and actually very few coaches have "won anything".
The defence has clearly improved and changed the way it sets up this year and it's working very well and it certainly has some similarities to the way freo have set up down back.
Our coaching group is a team sharing ideas and working together to try and achieve success together clearly Lloyd is part of that. He will no doubt be sharing info from freo as Scarlett will from his time with the dogs and the various other experience the coaching group has.
Matthew Scarlett taking up a coching role is the best thing that could ever happen to Chris Scott & this current playing group. He will DEMAND respect and commitment, and instill hunger back into the collective.Scarlett to Lloyd: You worry about your text-books and spread-sheets and I'll worry about turning our back 6 into the meanest defence in the comp. Think both systems are pretty equal, Hawthorn have had a little more luck to date with the players available in free agency and trade as needed.
I dont think they are even close.
Not only has Clarkson been able to maintain a level of success that is unprecedented in the modern era of football, he's also been able to produce 5 current AFL coaches who served under him, and spread that winning culture to improve clubs like the Western Bulldogs, GWS, Richmond (up until this year) and West coast.
