Fix SANFL Fixture or AFL Reserves?

If we were kicked out of the SANFL we could look to create a new competition with the WA, QLD & NSW clubs, an 8 team competition. It wouldn't be Ideal since there would be quite a bit of travel separate to the AFL team but would be better than nothing.

How many years is this agreement with the sanfl?
We have known about the fixture since December. we should have organised practice matches for our bye weekends against other clubs around Australia that also have byes etc or call the power reserves and play a trial.

Not a hell of a lot that can be done about it. 5 byes in a season is a farce. The SANFL fixture and management is laughable and they seem determined to shed any and all claims to being the second best league in Australia as fast as possible.

I have suggested this before. They all play in the NEAFL now so add crows and port

The women's team we have applied for also removes the VFL as an option due to the extra cost.

Were we not promised by the AFC that our push for a women's team would in no way detract from our Men's team ability to perform. There would be some serious questions of leadership if we were forced to disband our reserves or play in the Ammos because we lack funding to send them to an appropriate competition.

Don't forget there will be funding from the NT government as well to support our Women's side, we're not in that alone.

I've only seen Fagan quotes from what was posted by NikkiNoo . From memory it could comfortably be read that no resources presently deployed to the men's team will be removed due to the women's licence. Not that we won't not allocate other resources which could benefit the men's team.

The current SANFL fixture is abysmal for all clubs and teams competing not just the two reserves teams. Sturt had a bye in Round 2 and again in Round 7. I think any suggestion that it is to the deliberate detriment to the reserves teams is myopic if not paranoid.
One of the reasons for the two reserves teams entering the SANFL that was heavily pushed by puppets in the media was that it would get rid of the bye. Three years down the track we've got more byes and less games.
People should look at what diehard SANFL supporters have had to put up with in order to grant both AFL clubs their wishes with stand alone reserves teams before complaining about the fixture.

From memory the quote did include the word 'currently' or 'existing.' or having similar effect. Words like that don't find their way into important statements by accident. I understand that there is seperate sponsorship being procured for the women's team, but unless it runs at a surplus or exactly break even, any dollar spent could have gone to the men's team, even if it incurred a further footy dept tax cost. Whether it would be a good investment or not is another question. Keeping our reserves together needs to be priority 1 in my view. It has such a positive cultural benefit to the club.

You don't think that having two teams competing for a premiership free of any salary cap restrictions would seem unfair? You haven't considered that if any of the 8 SANFL clubs break the salary cap of $350k they get fined or penalised while the two reserves teams are free to do what they want?
You consider this a fair playing field in a sporting comp?
How would you feel if Port had these concessions in the AFL and Adelaide didn't? Would you think that fair? Would you feel disgruntled?
I'm not sure what your point of the money that Adelaide pay to play in the comp has to do with anything and I disagree with your assumption that many SANFL clubs would fold without it, they survived before and will go on to do so.
From memory there hasn't been any SANFL club bail outs for a very long time yet there's half a dozen AFL club bail outs every year.

I'm primarily a Sturt supporter, Adelaide come second for me, so I can see both sides of the argument and to be honest, the increasing disdain for the SANFL coming from AFL supporters is getting pretty myopic and boring. I couldn't really care what people think of the SANFL, it's not trying to be anything it isn't, if you're not interested then fine but don't go around trying to tell people what validity the comp has or that it wouldn't survive without the gracious benefit of an AFL club that quite frankly undermines the integrity of the competition.

Here's a tip, on here it is. But it is their comp to run how they wish and we are just 1 team with a tenuous right to be a part of it.

In an ideal world there'd be an 8 team interstate team comp under the AFL umbrella. Would be a bit more expensive than the current solution. Super low balling 8 teams travelling 8 times by 30 people at $800 (air$600, acc$200) is $1.5m. Any sponsorship would probably be cannibalising existing opportunities. Depending on ground costs it might not extend much past $3m, which while a biggish number, shouldn't be too much trouble. We already spend $200k anyway. Quick recalc 8 travel by 35 people at $1000 each is still only $2.8m. Surely doable.

Glenelg are heavily in debt too. $3 million if I remember correctly. They spent a shit ton of money on their new hospitality facilities and it hasn't done great, only made $66K profit while they lost $275K on the footy side of things last year.

They're supposed to be getting $2 million from the SANFL for the sale of Footy Park, but that's over 7 years and $2 million of what they owe is to the Holdfast Bay council, who would like their money back sooner rather than later.

Why would North have to fold or merge? They are the most financially stable club in the sanfl. 80 pokies and 2 pubs has sorted that out. Get your facts right.

chazwazza Care to explain Centrals? It was very well known that they were always over the salary cap via other means, so that argument doesn't wash with me. The two AFL reserve teams are not free to do as they want. Yes, they have AFL list players playing there, but the majority of those players are the lowest paid on an AFL list. They also have top up players who are not SANFL level and don't have the salaries the SANFL players get. So they have higher and lower.

I've competed against teams/athletes who have better training and facilities etc related to greater money they receive. Do I still get out there and want to do better than them. Hell yes and once the game/competition starts, we are on an even basis. If you think already that you are behind the eight ball, then you are very likely to get beaten. There are very few competitions where everyone is even. Even in the AFL it is not an even competition in terms of footy department spends etc and other teams with concessions, so it's already there in the AFL. Sometimes I am okay with the concessions, other times I think they have been too generous.

A few of the clubs were on the verge of having to either merge or go into bankruptcy without the bailout monies from the AFL teams. Those were some very real concerns about the failures of the sanfl at the time. There just isn't a market for the sanfl so much anymore. And as MRB37 says above, Glenelg still have financial issues and they wouldn't be the only one.

Pretty sure the AFL have said that idea isn't on the cards and I imagine the VFL will certainly push against the idea happening again.

That's where an 8 team comp of interstate teams could work. I doubt we'd find dealing with the VFL any more palatable than the SANFL. NEAFL would be the most likely, but the cost will be borne entirely by us, which will dent Fagan's bottom line significantly.

The sanfl has only ever bailed out one club in this state, to the tune of 15 million and that's the port adelaide football club. Without that money they would've folded 5 years ago.
