2nd qtr umpiring:
9.10 left Taylor massive push in the back to McCartin, no free.
7.30 left Taylor whacks McCartin in the face, no free.
3 mins left centre bounce free kick to Selwood. WTF for?

that's just the 2nd quarter. But yeah, the Cats were robbed o_O

Clear contested mark to Brucey at full stretch, directly in front ( can't remember now exactly when).... Not paid!

wright busted what looks like his shoulder or collarbone at the start of the 2nd. pretty much plays the rest of the game in absolute pain and with one arm. doesnt shirk one contest at all. unbelievable

even takes the hardball get, accepts he will get smashed and wins his team a ball up

If thats the case he should be extended for another year.

3rd qtr
first 15 seconds McCartin mark in front of goal not paid, instead a push in the back invented by the ump.
13.46 left Taylor over the shoulder on Membrey not paid.
12.20 left mark to Newnes not paid leads to direct Cats goal.
11 mins left McCarthy deliberately runs in to Roberton, Robo grabs McCarthy, McCarthy pushes Robo...free kick Cats and goal.
9.40 left eyes not on ball and frontal contact to Bruce, no free.
3.30 Blicavs takes Gilbert high AND in the back, no free.

I didn't think of doing this when watching the first quarter, but the umpiring got ridiculous
The Newnes non-mark and the Bruce frontal contact were correct.

Newnes had control, but not long enough before it was punched out of his hands.

Bruce barely got touched in a legitimate attempt to spoil.

Roberton got sucked in.

I have been away and didn't see the game so I am getting some background from this thread. Couple of observations
  • We performed on the big stage and deserve more. Enough of Sunday Twilight games. Send Collingwood there till they get better.
  • There is a lot of love from other clubs for our effort. When the game is on TV, people will watch the game and they liked what they saw.
  • Our list is deep and getting deeper. There are really good players not in this team
  • A style that is based upon fierce tackling, accountability and second efforts aligned with a reasonable list will win games.
  • When I put the Saints in the finals based upon using the AFL ladder predictor, I had not included this wine.
  • I am stoked, really stoked

Not according to the actual rules of the game. You just have to stop the ball in flight for a mark, doesn't matter how long for. And you say "barely touched" Bruce..eyes not on the ball, frontal contact, free every day of the week mate. Robbo did get sucked in though, but why not pay the first free to Robbo? Maybe if he went down like a Selwood he would've got it.

Something that I just know will be forgotten when we have our next loss, is that our gameplan entirely changed last night. Richo and the coaches strategy of kicking down the line as infrequently as possible put massive holes in their ability to get the ball. They rely on their tall backmen to intercept, but the boys application of this strategy meant the game was played on our terms. This comes after he outcoached Roos, and outcoached Lyon. Not to mention against "coach of the year" Beveridge last year in the comeback game.

You look at his decision to put Ross on Mitchell against Hawthorn, where Mitchell only had a handful of kicks and Ross was his usual delivering self. That was replicated extremely well against Danger. Bruce was a backmen, Savage was a half forward, Tom Lee was a forward we didn't need.

Any poster that says Richo isn't a thinking coach or isn't good at game day strategy is blind.

While I've pumped up Mav's terrific game overall, one thing that he needs to improve on IMO is just making sure he gets the goal and doesn't worry so much about how they look.

Last game v Carlton there was that stretch of 5-10 minutes in the 3rd quarter or so when he had about 3 shots for goal in quick succession and one of them was when he crumbed off hands, about 15m out in front and went for a pretty elaborate snap, that would have seen the ball go 20 rows back (if he'd connected with it), but in taking the big swing of the leg and getting his hand higher in the ball drop (to allow the bigger swing of the leg), he took that second or so longer to get the kick away and that allowed whoever was closing in on him to make contact with him/tackle him and knock him off his kick, and consequently it sailed wide (when all he needed to do was quickly/simply drop the ball across his boot and snap it over the goal ump's hat, without any fuss and before anyone had time to get to him) and in the 2nd half last night, Josh Bruce did terrifically to while diving forward get a ground ball off to him with a handball- which Mav caught at full stretch overhead, running into the goalsquare- and all he needed to do then was immediately drop the ball straight down onto his foot and dribble it through from 6m out, but instead he kept on running (took another couple of steps) and I dare say was planning on running up to the goal line and thumping it up into the 2nd tier, but again, he got run down, when he could have already gotten his kick away and put the goal on the board.

It's good to put on a show and all, but the first priority needs to be to ensure that you just get the goal and twice in two weeks he's unnecessarily not gotten the ball to boot quickly enough within 15m of goal and it's cost him/us a goal each time, and in games like last night, those type of things can be the difference between winning a game or losing it. So he needs to just get better at getting it onto the boot faster and more economically and making sure he just gets the job done, first and foremost.

I actually think we could do a hell of a lot worse than to get Milney down to the club to work on these types of things with our forward group, as he was/is about as good as anyone I've seen at doing all the different types of kicks and snaps that you need to be able to do when playing a roving type role up forward. He could get the ball onto his boot in a flash when he needed to and that's the sort of thing he could teach the likes of Mav, to make him more dangerous/efficient up there. Sometimes you just don't have time for the big wind-up.

just watching the replay. Gresham's 3rd quarter was absolutely ridiculous. if he doesn't get the RS nom this week then it must have been a 3 voter by the dude who did

Roberton and Delaney's performance very undervalued.. Thought they were great last night. Delaney did a great job on Hawkins. Hawkins kicked a cheap one from the goal line and the other was from a contested mark from a quick Center clearance, which he couldn't do much about..
Delaney has a much easier job when our mids and forwards pressure the ball going forward.

Delaney and Roberton together combined for 23 disposals with 100% efficiency.
