We're short a midfielder, but we also aren't going to rob Peter to pay Paul and weaken other areas of our first 22 by sending out Lever/McGovern/Cameron.

Sending out a 1st rounder doesn't weaken our side now. Even sending out Lyons may not as they want to mix up the sameness of our midfield, which means Lyons will potentially be moved on. The picks will be there, but I don't see the Crows being super eager to accommodate any requests for those sorts of young players.

And if we don't get him? Then we move on and maybe go for Rockliff. Or make an offer to someone else, Gibbs isn't the only fish in the ocean.
I thought with the strength of your forward line and back half, you'd be able to send us a decent player. Agree a good mid is defeating the purpose of getting Gibbs.

if carlton are just going to pass our pick onto GWS for marchbank, then why does it matter if its pick 9 or 13 or 20 or whatever we manage to turn picks/players into. as long as GWS accept it for marchbank then who cares what it is.
Hence why they aren't that keen on 13, and are asking for quite a bit as a sweetener I think.

What I would be doing if I was Carlton was be trying to use pick 13 to secure Marchbank rather than giving up the much more valuable pick 5 in the deal to GWS.

If losing Gibbs could provide the resources for Carlton to keep pick 5 that is the thinking that could lead to this deal eventually getting done.

Pick 13 + a Lyons pick/sweetener of some accord to Carlton, they flip pick 13 for Marchbank and maybe Pickett keeping pick 5 would be a decent enough result. It would essentially be

Gibbs for Marchbank/Pickett + Lyons pick whilst allowing them to keep pick 5. It would be kind of like where we used to Dangerfield second rounder + Kerridge to secure Menzel, which helped look the Dangerfield deal slightly less lopsided at the time.

Problem as I see it is what's the alternative for the Crows? It seems pretty clear that the Crows are 1 A-grade midfielder short of being flag contenders. Getting a player like Gibbs in this trade period solves that issue for the next 4 years at least, since I think he has that much of his best football left and will continue to play on after that too.

Who else can the Crows get this trade period? Would you rather your club pay overs to get a contracted player across who fills a big need now or just hope for the best again in 2017?

If the Crows don't want to hand over their first pick and a quality player that fits a need Carlton has, then so be it. It would seem Carlton aren't interested in accepting a pittance just because Gibbs has requested the trade and rightly so. I doubt he will sit out a year of football in order to break his contract if no trade happens - he's too old to be risking this, plus there's no guarantee he will end up where he wants if he has to enter a draft again.
Not suggesting Carlton should accept a 'pittance'. Throwing in one of the Crouches or McGovern simply won't happen. I think it'll come down to Pick 13 and 2017 2nd rounder (or 2016 2nd rounder if we get one for Lyons).

People have to stop jumping at shadows.

Keep in mind that Essendon were asking for Wingard, Wines, Boak etc for Ryder. It's standard trade fare it will more than likely drag on for days yet.

People just have to patient and have faith that it will happen eventually for a fair price presumably involving other clubs in the deal.

I'd suggest the Crows would be more inclined to give up Dear or Cheney/Brown than McGovern or Lever. I don't think many at all would be surprised to see Lever as the captain of the side in 5 years time.

I'm with rowey on this one, he will be a gun ff, one of the best in the afl in a couple of years, doubt he will be traded.
Learning his craft nice and quietly. He doesn't have the pressure or media scrutiny Walker had at his age. Walker was expected to perform. In a very good place.

Going to Carlton would wreck everything for him. Not only is their no culture or talent to learn from, he will be expected to perform.

I do not rate Kerridge at all. He's an athlete who finds plenty of the ball, but you don't want the ball in his hands. He invariably fumbles or plays hot potato with it.
On the other hand I'm Wright's biggest fan. Pretty much the opposite of Kerridge.

So I'm not really sure where that leaves Lyons. Anyway didn't he say he doesn't want to go to Carlton? If you can get a pick in the 20s for him then it packaged with 13 would surely land Gibbs.

If Wright is your favorite player, then you'll have a strange weird sexual attraction to Lyons. Wright is a poor mans Lyons.

How typical is it that any other club goes out on the front foot and they're are lauded for being proactive but the crows do it and a Victorian club has a whinge complaining it wasn't done in the right spirit and play the 'poor us' card, furthermore when in the past players 'claim' to want to go home to Victoria due to family issues 'interstate' clubs need to make their passage as easy as possible and accept the offer on the table no matter what the players contract situation is but as soon as on the few rare occasions the shoe is on the other foot and players want to head back from Victoria the Victorian clubs and the Victorian media/fans have so many tickets on themselves that they take it as a personal insult that someone dare want to leave the 'Football Mecca' for an 'inferior' place.

Only then when a player wants to go to a interstate club the modern day player power movement all of a sudden becomes awful and bad for the game and the affected Victorian team needs to make a stand against these marauders and it is then acceptable for a club to do everything in their power to make sure a deal doesn't happen and to hold on to a player against his wishes or to at least bleed the interstate team dry.

This is going to drag out to the last day or Gibbs is staying at Carlton.

I'm not so sure. It's only Tuesday.

The Pick 13 + Cameron seems to be a leak from Carlton as a "starting point". That's their high point of negotiation. Too high.

I'm sure we have a low point of negotiation - we've seen talk of Gibbs + Pick 24 for Lyons + Pick 13. Too low.

Middle ground needs to be found and 99% of the time is found (O'Keefe being the exception, but the atmosphere has changed since then.)

Carlton have the "upper hand" because Gibbs is contracted, definitely. But they also have other business to deal with that would involve Pick 13 so I doubt they want to genuinely stuff around too much.

The Blues have every right to play hardball. I doubt they keep a 28 year old who doesn't want to be there when they can get a 1st round pick and more. I think a trade will get done involving Pick 13 and another pick, be it one we get for another player like Lyons, or a 2017 pick.

Would Cheney and our first get 24 in return? Would be good value as Doedee may replace him next year, while we still have Kelly, Meth etc as depth.

And frankly, I'm not at all surprised to see SOS target Lever/McGovern/Cameron. They've all got tremendous potential, and the worst that can happen is we say no to them asking about them.

If you're selling a car you automatically ask for a bit more for the starting price knowing you'll get haggled down. And likewise for us, you don't immediately offer up the asking price, you offer lower and work your way up and hopefully both sides will hit an amount they're both satisfied with.

You walked in with 13 + Lyons.

I'm not seeing how 13 + Cameron is massively over that.
