I read your other post, let's say we finish top 2, that's 17 or 18 before it gets bumped back, could easily be early 20s if all goes well.

So we give them an early second, we are only getting that by giving up quality. That pick would be in the 20-30 range. So we could end up in a protracted situation for possibly 5-10 spots in the draft and lose a decent player.

If we have great year I would trade the first and be done with it. Of course if we bomb from here that's a different story.

Hypothetical.
Say we have pick 18.
18 and mackay to melbourne for 26 and 62.
We trade 26 to carlton for gibbs.

As good as he may be, I wouldn't entertain getting him. At this point our player development is good. Why get a 29 YO and stop a player coming on. We will also need the salary cap money to retain players long term. 2018 will have some big name players coming off contract eg Sloane.

So we lose 18 and Mackay for Gibbs and 62? That's a shocker and I'm not a fan of Mackay. We would just do 18 for Gibbs.

I'd do it just so we didn't have the risk of selecting Mackay again.

he was very good, what are you smoking?

maybe watch a game before making a fool of yourself. or move to canberra

I didnt watch the game. I asked the question. Usually when he plays a good game the thread heats up. I was asking why the crickets?

Hawthorn has a half dozen examples of why we should stick to project youth.

I hate to break it to you but Hawthorn are the single worst example for the sticking to youth argument.

How so? They got to the pinnacle with project youth. They pivoted once they were there.

In any case my feeling on Hawthorn is on their 30+ year old players this year. Most of these guys where at a reasonable age when they were in their premiership window. Bryce Gibbs is still a good player and probably will be next season as well. But unlikely he will maintain his levels for much longer than that.

There is still a price I would have us pay for him but contract length and salary cap is my main concern with him.

We still want gibbs. Reid wants to make sos look like a dumb campaigner.
Trying to cancel out himself looking like a dumb campaigner day one of last years trade week?

They played at the same time as us. I doubt anyone was watching the Carlton game

Agreed. With our list makeup, if we get close but just miss this year (or if we win it) then I'm happy to trade a first. If everything falls apart, it's a different story.

Looking at the same guys except Dear contracted 2018.
So it looks like Shaw, Thommo, and at this time Gore, Wigg, and depends with CEY will they give him another year.
Of those three, I think Wigg would be the most likely to be retained - CEY the most likely to be delisted.

When was the last time we delisted a contracted, uninjured player?
We did it with Tom Lee, drafting him in 2008 and delisting him in 2009. We paid out the 2nd year of his inaugural draftee contract.

It doesn't happen often, but it can happen, has happened in the past, and will probably happen again in the future.

No we cannot, it not that simple unless he retire's and even then the AFL investigate the circumstances, The Crows cannot delist a player with a current contract without reason, ie breach of contract and even then they need to jump through hoops.
Yes, they can.

However, if they choose to do so then they must pay out the salary for any remaining years, and the salary for future years is included in the current year's TPP.

For example, if a player had a $150k per year contract, with 1 year left to run... we'd have to pay them $300k this year (the 2017 & 2018 salaries), and all $300k would count against our 2017 salary cap.

** The above only holds true if the player does not end up on an AFL list the following year. If we were to re-draft him (i.e. in the Rookie Draft), then he would receive $150k in 2017 and $150k while on the rookie list in 2018. If he were drafted by another club, we'd have to pay the difference between his 2018 contract at his new club and the $150k he would have received at Adelaide.

Its icing on the cake. Not essential but a luxury. Thats why we don't overpay but we make an offer. Always nice to gain decent players.
