Hawks finished in the top 8 last year but still managed to get the picks required to bring in 2 A grade midfielders, we just aren't trying hard enough we could have upgraded our 1st pick and had a shot at a top 10 mid in the draft in any one of the last couple of drafts. Gws did what they had to last year as well.

The first hurdle is convincing A-grade midfielders to move.

And Hawthorn's trading last year shouldn't be held up as an example of what to do.

I was more using it as an example of there are always ways to get what you want if you want it enough, we just tend to sit back. Doesn't have to be ready made A grade mids. Identify the best mid that suits our needs in the draft and do whatever it takes to get the pick needed to draft him. Use future picks, swap picks with other clubs and trade players etc.

In the past five years we've traded in Cripps, Wellingham, Morton (I know, I know), Yeo, Ellis, Redden, Jetta and Mitchell. All mids or players with the potential to play midfield. In addition the club identified Sheed as the player they wanted in the 2013 draft, that he was likely to be available outside the top 10 and so traded down to get him plus a second round pick.

That's on top of whatever they're doing in the background to convince players to ask for a trade to the club that we never hear about because it doesn't come to fruition.

That's not proactive enough?

I don't think it's a question of effort. We've just been struggling to get the players to want to move west even when they're from WA. Whether we could be doing better on this front, perhaps.

Hawthorn's first pick in last years draft was somewhere in the seventies

Their first pick in this years draft as it stands is the Giants 2nd round pick which is likely to be mid thirties

To get those trades done last year they used Brad Hill, picks 15 and 33 (or thereabouts) and their first two picks this year which on current ladder positions are picks 5 and 23

There's getting stuff done and there's mortgaging your future

But at least they were trying hard.

No to mention one of the kids they got is 50/50 to ever get on the park again...

Jarryd Blair dropped from the Pies, anyone know his contract status?

Watching him last night that's all I was thinking about we have nobody like him or SPP
Jarman Impey was pretty useful too.

Was having a look at the 2013 draft (wher Impey was taken at pick 21) and there have been very few total busts inside the top 30. Matthew Scharenberg (6) Nathan Freeman (10), and Michael Apeness (17) are the only 3 to play less than 10 games. Oustide of that, there is some very useful players, most with near 50 games.

Might've been nice if we could have hardballed Brisbane on the Yeo trade to turn pick 31 into 28 and take Rory Lobb. Or maybe parleyed that into something earlier.

Anyone rate Johnny Frampton?
Monocle AsterixTheGaul Eastern Rangers .

Not much of good WA talent coming through and could potentially be picked late or via rookie I guess.

Would like to see us pick a young ruck/fwd and really develop them

Doubt he will make the grade.
I am going to the State 18's and young ruck stocks are very much on my radar so I will keep you posted with updates along the way .
We will have an interesting decision to make in this forthcoming draft as I expect that at our pick there are going to be some tantalising talls still on the board and the temptation to take one is going to be difficult to pass up on . This years talls are very, very good.

What if Frampton comes alive?
