Assessing the 2nd best key forwards at each club by goals kicked and ranking them so far (End of round 18).
Generally to qualify there has to be another key forward kicking more goals at the club.
If there are only two key forwards and they both have same number of goals the one with fewer behinds or goals per game was selected. Some exceptions have been made based on personal opinion.
For clubs that run 3 tall forwards selecting only the one of them can be subjective.
Injuries have meant sometimes these players have played as the sole key forward which can help or hinder their output depending on your opinion. Also means they all haven't played the same number of games.

1. Jonathan Patton (GWS) 34 goals, 11 behinds, 33 contested marks, 31 marks inside 50.
2. Jack Darling (WCE) 32 goals, 19 behinds, 24 contested marks, 40 marks inside 50.
3. Cale Hooker (Essendon) 32 goals, 17 behinds, 38 contested marks, 34 marks inside 50.
4. Josh Jenkins (Adelaide) 28 goals, 14 behinds, 17 contested marks, 27 marks inside 50.
5. Tim Membrey (St Kilda) 26 goals, 12 behinds, 31 contested marks, 34 marks inside 50.
6. Peter Wright (GCS) 23 goals, 16 behinds, 22 contested marks, 32 marks inside 50.
7. Sam Reid (Sydney) 22 goals, 12 behinds, 28 contested marks, 32 marks inside 50.
8. Jarrad Waite (North Melbourne) 21 goals, 18 behinds, 10 contested marks, 25 marks inside 50.
9. Tom McDonald (Melbourne) 20 goals, 5 behinds, 19 contested marks, 13 marks inside 50.
10. Shane Kersten (Fremantle) 19 goals, 15 behinds, 10 contested marks, 21 marks inside 50.
11. Jack Gunston (Hawthorn) 18 goals, 10 behinds, 9 contested marks, 13 marks inside 50.
12. Jackson Trengrove (Port Adelaide) 16 goals, 10 behinds, 19 contested marks, 15 marks inside 50.
13. Harry Taylor (Geelong) 16 goals, 10 behinds, 26 contested marks, 19 marks inside 50.
14. Charlie Curnow (Carlton) 14 goals, 8 behinds, 27 contested marks, 20 marks inside 50.
15. Jack Redpath (Western Bulldogs) 11 goals, 8 behinds, 7 contested marks, 18 marks inside 50.
16. Ben Reid (Collingwood) 8 goals, 7 behinds, 10 contested marks, 9 marks inside 50.
17. Josh Schache (Brisbane) 8 goals, 4 behinds, 1 contested marks, 7 marks inside 50.
18. Toby Nankervis (Richmond) 6 goals, 4 behinds, 19 contested marks, 5 marks inside 50.

Notes:
Tom McDonald (20.5) or Jack Watts (20.9). Kind of tricky with Hogan in and out of the team. Went with McDonald as he is a slower more closer to goals type player.
Charlie Curnow (14.8) chosen over Jack Silvagni (15.15) as Silvagni is more of a 3rd tall.
Bulldogs not really sure who to pick so went with Redpath (11.8) compared to Boyd (7.3), Cloke (6.4), Dickson (6.1). As Jake Stringer has been their best big bodied player forward.
Richmond haven't really used a 2nd tall so Nankervis resting forward is the only option.
Tim Membrey is only 188cm and is by far the shortest named however he plays like a key forward at the Saints highlighted by his contested marking numbers.

The list highlights why Jack Darling gets rated too harshly for his perceived lack of goals, still one of the best in the comp at his role.

Shows how even the comp is with so many teams having question marks at this position, and even more with how to play a forward/ruck and keep them in form.

There's few teams that are settled - Adelaide, Essendon, GWS and that's about it.

North are having a down year but Ben Brown and Waite are still right up their in terms of a quality key forward combination.

Also Hooker, McDonald, Trengove, Taylor and Ben Reid were/are all defenders converted to forwards or forward/rucks. If Liam Jones going back is a revelation then in some ways these guys doing well forward is worthy of comment as well. Follows the trend of Zaine Cordy and Xav Richards playing as key forwards in last years grand final.

With zone defending these days it's the backman who reads the play and backs their skills and the CHF now often has to be a competitive player with a big tank who opens the zone with work rate or brings the ball to ground with competitive efforts.

Does Vickery count or would he count for Box Hill?
3rd tall at box hill. 1st stand over man though

A lot of footy fans focus on the moments where a player has made bad decisions (turnovers, silly shots on goals that miss, etc) or when players have not had an impact in big games critical to the season like finals.
Rather than looking at their output over the season.
Also many of us are still used to the 90's and early 2000's where key forwards kicked way more goals per season compared to now.

Jenkins lower than I expected. Significant injury outs, or just battling for his share of ball in the Crows forward line?

Richmond haven't really used a 2nd tall so Nankervis resting forward is the only option.

You're right - we don't have a second tall (and I would definitely love one). However - overall we are No 2 (behind Adelaide) for most marks taken Inside Forward 50.

Go figure.

More than one way to skin a cat....................

If 188cm qualifies, and a resting ruckmen is allowed, then surely Richmond's second best forward can be a 187cm resting midfielder, thus a certain D.Martin, having kicked 23 goals would qualify.

They way he's used down there (one out, isolated in the square) certainly fits being called a 'key forward'.

very concerning for port if dixon goes down. what do you think port fans?

Less concerning when you have quality smalls in Gray and Wingard who can hit the scoreboard.

Yes the Richmond forward line is still winning matches fairly well. Having a 2nd key tall isn't always necessary.

Eddie Betts should be on top of your list. He has 41 goals, and Tex has 42. Jenkins is our third highest.

Eddie fails the criteria of being a key forward.

Tim Membrey was the only exception i wanted to make on height as like i said he very much plays as a key forward.
Midfielders resting forward such as Dustin Martin and Patrick Dangerfield were not considered for this list as they don't play the game mostly forward. Also for those players it is difficult to separate the goals they kick as a midfielder and those from when resting forward from contested marks/on the lead marks.
Nankervis resting ruck was the only remaining option as Ivan Soldo and Ben Griffiths have no goals from the small number of games they have played.

He doesn't get rated harshly for a perceived lack of goals, he gets rated harshly because he was expected to be a better player than he has turned out. Also because he is soft.

Jenkins missed 4 games and was injured a few minutes into one of the games he did play.

3. 2.15 Josh Jenkins (Adelaide) 28 goals, 14 behinds, 17 contested marks, 27 marks inside 50.
4. 2.00 Jack Darling (WCE) 32 goals, 19 behinds, 24 contested marks, 40 marks inside 50.
5. 2.00 Cale Hooker (Essendon) 32 goals, 17 behinds, 38 contested marks, 34 marks inside 50.
