Can we all spare a moment for Lids

Left a dysfunctional, failing side that was on the cusp of its coach and board being sacked, at 30 years old, for a top 4 club full of young promising talent.

You couldn't ******* write the script of just how unlucky he got.
I think it was a little sad when he was booed leading our guys out through the banner. In fairness to the Tiger army they were keyed up to welcome our team, and I think Lids just got in the way.

Deledio was a great servant of the club, a great guy and a gun player. But while he did leave to chase glory, he was also (partly) pushed out the door in order to maintain picks for the future. It was a mutual decision in a results driven league and both the club and the player have moved on. It's also clear last year and now that he's past his prime and, even if he were playing with the tigs it's questionable he gets a game. Had little influence today and plays a role which isn't hard to find players for. Wouldn't surprise me if he retires next year.

I think long term there's an important role for him in our forward line. This year it got a bit muddled because he was fit so close to the seasons end, and Stevie was coaching the forwards onfield. I doubt he'll retire as long as his body is good.

Yeah, thanks for clarifying - I thought it was more than a simple quest for glory - I thought the tiges wanted some cap relief too, and it was pretty mutual.

Maybe, but he's lost a fair bit of pace and doesn't really win that much ball. Not sure you can play slow aging forwards in this league anymore. He also isn't much of a tackler and I think the giants need to improve their forward half pressure to become a better side. One of the big differences today was Richmond's ability to generate scores from turnovers or stoppages inside 50 and get goals from small forwards in open play. Not sure Deledio gives you that.

You expecting him to play for another 5 years or something ?

He is cooked same as SJ, Richmond has seen his best years and he was a mug for chasing glory

Cap relief and picks. Richmond shopped him around a bit and once it was revealed that Richmond wasn't willing to treat him as a non-tradeable player Deledio went looking. I suspect Richmond was willing to keep him and I suspect Deledio was willing to stay but once the possibility of a first-rounder emerged Richmond became flexible and so did Brett.

Against the Criws we really focussed on defensive pressure and laid 110 tackles 40 in our forward 50. They did us with creativity and ball movement.
I think today was similar, and the lack if forwatd defensive pressure is a bit if a myth.
There is truth that Stevie J isn't contributing enough defensively. I dont really want to trash a great player whose body is broken though, he's retired now anyway.
I think Lids will provide composure and leadership as long as his body holds up.

Yeah they're both done. Deledio's speed has vanished and his long zone busting kicks are too. Johnson has lost his agility and cleverness and now tries to do too much. They're players who can't play two good games in a row as their bodies don't allow it, and you can't be carrying liabilities like that into a finals series where you have to play at least 3 to 4 games to win a grand final.

He's 30 and players these days typically have a least a couple more years at that age. He isn't Stevie J who is now retired.

How many of those 40 (it was actually 32 but anyway) tackles inside 50 created a goal or resulted in a free kick or genuinely halted Adelaide's ball movement coming out of defence though? Not all tackles are equally good.

I think the worst thing is Deledio doesn't look a shadow of his former self. I think it is mainly down to not having a solid pre-season. Personally I think he looks cooked.

He gave us his best years and it would have been great if he was still with us going into a GF next week. Always be a tiger.

Yeah but he has struggled with injuries for two years now. I don't see the point in hiding him on a flank to try and mask his deficiencies which aren't his fault but are there.

Exactly, any player who is 30 isn't involved in a long term plan

I remember when he was one of the fittest guys on your list, extremely dangerous player.

The club stats vary from what other sources give. I do think it is definition of what a tackle is.
It's a oointless discussion. I will only say that I follow our guys closely, and while I'd welcome a guy like Townsend ( I'm aware of the irony but he's not the mid we traded anymore) I just dont believe defensive pressure is the issue. Fluency if ball movement is holding us back.
I'm pretty bullish about next year and with a stable playing grouo that will sort itself out. This year you were too good, enjoy.

I loved Lids but I was proud that the club stood up and finally made a massive trade we haven't taken the hard road with trading out some quality to get quality. I don't think we would've got as far as we have with him in our side this season unfortunately age/injuries were taking its toll. Terrible luck for him too.
