Rocky is close enough to par with Gibbs and is a year younger. If we square off that we are overall even.

If we get pick 10 for Gibbs, it's basically adding free youth.

I brought this up a long time ago, that the best theoretical trade situation (while compensation is around) is to trade out your contracted 26-28yos, bag the compo, and then bring in 'free' replacements. Or to let an FA go, bag the compo, wait a year and bring in an FA.

Of course this kind of brutal list management of forcing out contracted players and club stalwarts shows disloyalty and breeds resentment in the playing list.

BUT if it's the player the instigates the move.....jackpot. You can take advantage of the situation and not take any blame. You basically get to create free picks out of thin air. Win-win.

Yeah it does. But I couldn't take it, especially Cornes spouting that pick 13 (or was it 14) alone was way overs, and that we should have been happy with a 2nd rounder (for a player under contract no less FFS!). Absolute shit slinger he is, and I just had to bite, and tell him as much.

Don't you know that any rebuild is a failure unless it accomplishes a dynasty? it's kids, kids, and only kids for first 3-4 years of a rebuild. if they die, they die (as Ivan Drago said) so no use for mature bodies to fill an age bracket we're sorely lacking in.

Except that's not what I'm saying. I wholly agree we need experienced senior players around. Having those experienced senior players allows us to play the kids.

But there comes a point when we can afford to lose one or two of those experienced players to bring in more kids.

Next year Docherty and Cripps will be ready to step up into more senior roles. We have Levi and Matty Wright in the forward line as experience, Kruezer, Thomas, Murphy and Ed Curnow in the guts, and Simpson, ASOS, Rowe, Jones and Docherty down back.

That's plenty of experience, and it doesn't include Gibbs or Rockliff.

Trading Gibbs let's us get Kennedy and Smith and retain our pick 3. It also ensures we do not have to dilute our draft position next year also enhancing our ability to get in more talented kids.

Presuming we can get Rockliff as a free agent, we would be mad not to do it. Heck; I would still do it even if we couldn't get Rocky. We have a enough of a solid core of experience to enable us to play the kids even without Gibbs or Rocky.

Won't happen. Why would freo give up a pick when they could just take BB in the preseason draft for nothing?

Same principle for us, balic might have slightly more interest due to more club's in Victoria. Although majority of players get to their nominated club

Do you think that if we don't land Rockliff that Gibbs may stays for another 12 months? We could then chase a FA like Dahlhaus who would only be 26 at the start of 2019, moves better than Rockliff and barely misses a game. Or even Gaff if he stays at west coast, he is more a pure winger though. Bryce's value is at it's highest point right now but we should still be able to command a pick on it's own next year. I guess it will all come down to what Adelaide are prepared to pay!

Yes he is soft as butter but we don't exactly have an excess of outside, speedy, goal kicking midfielders. JGM, Graham and Bucks are on the chopping block before him, and it is doubtful all three of them will depart particularly if Gibbs leaves.

His last couple of games showed that he clearly has enough to make it in the AFL. He can get 20+ possessions and kick a goal or two. He has been tracking upwards lately, with improvement in the VFL leading to an AFL appearances that were very very good (named in our best's). Yes he has areas of his game he needs to work on (he sh*ts himself under physical pressure), but you don't delist of player that has strengths in one area but witnesses in another. You back your development and coaching to get the best out of him.

Even this talk of trading him for a third round draft pick is madness. Your chances of finding a better player than him with a third round draft pick is negligible.

I've heard that as well actually, so I'll back you up on that.

I'd go:
Kennedy......a 10 year player that will do exactly what he's told to do. Harder than nails.
Rockliff........as much for taking some heat off Cripps, as for his playing quality.
Smith..........If fit, this is a quality player mid/goal-kicker. Easy to forget.
Saad...........Too yo-yo for me. Not sure he's the type that would work with our back-line.

Not sure Id use the term yo yo, but we could certainly do with his pace and run out of the backline, and has really good disposal efficiency too, despite what people are saying, its above 80% for his career o far from memory. Pace, run, uses the ball well coming out of defence, how does he not fit in our backline. We certainly need a small defender back there.
