I'm not sure whether anyone heard the OX on SEN the other day back me up.

He said something along the lines of, and I'll paraphrase. 'I was speaking to one of Ablett Jnr's mates In July and little Gaz told him that he's going to save his body for when he returns home.'
Lol. Sure thing.
Firstly I don't believe he would have said/done that. If he did I don't like it. And ox gets a bit of stuff wrong.

Name one above average skill Lang possesses. He's another who can't get on the field so supporters start creating their own image of what he can do - Smedts, Cowan experienced the same.

Disagree. He's already shown more than Cowan ever did. He has good vision and awareness, and can dispose of the ball well.

Still think he's worth persevering with.

and when they do get on the field and dont perform those same supporters say they do the 1 percenters well and thats why they are in the team - kersten comes to mind

I get the argument, and completely agree on Cowan (Smedts to me showed far more), but I think Lang is better than that.

He played a very good game only two weeks ago.

On the surface it doesn't look good if he said that, but we don't know what goes on behind closed doors.
Exactly which is also why ox should not have made such a thoughtless comment. Who knows what was said, if anything. Who knows if it wasn't something said in jest etc,. Just dumb by ox. What's to be gained by saying that? Weird.

He said it ... to his mates behind closed doors who were silly and naive enough to pass the information along.

Comments in the paper today suggest this has no hope of happening. Given Cochrane this can only happen if ablett puts up the retirement ultimatum. Even then it might not. But it cant happen until Ablett does.

It will happen because if it doesn't, Abletts salary will be part of their salary cap next year and they won't get anything if he retires. They wouldn't be that stupid. We don't have anything to lose so we hold the cards. A deal will be done towards the end of the trade period.

Ablett/Pickering doesn't have to overtly tell Evans or Cochrane that he plans to retire, that allows them to other plans in place. The underlying threat of retiring creates uncertainty for the club, especially while looking for a new coach and overhauling the list. This is the leverage point. This is strengthened with Pickering telling reporters that he will retire, so it is still out there as a credible outcome.

It works better if they tell him. They may still genuinally think he could still play at the gold coast next year. If that is the case there is no leverage.

Thats assuming gold coast believe ablett will retire

How do you know he said it? And it's exactly the sort of thing someone would say as a joke anyway. Major problems with hearsay!

The OX isn't one to make up stories and I heard before it was said on air that it's exactly what was happening.

It's a bit strange that he misses a week with a hamstring, he's back the next week, then misses again with the same problem, then back again.

He officially logged out of the Suns a while ago imo.

Exactly. So he has to not tell them anything, because it makes it difficult for their planning. He is not a bit player in their team, he is pivotal.

They can't simply assume that because he didnt say he was retiring, that he is staying. He has to tell them one or the other. Not telling them makes it really hard. Delaying the trade to the last minute also stuffs them around.

I agree with you but cochrane is enough of an ego based idiot to just keep him on the list and have his salary in the cap even while he is retired.

Let's hope more pragmatic heads prevail.

If they know he will retire its easier for them to plan i agree.
If he says he wont decide until december and if he retires then they are one short on the list next year and have his salary count in the cap, thats the isse.

Yep it's sounds like bs to me. If Ablett was even stupid enough to say that, he'd only say it to his close mates, who I can't imagine would repeat such a thing as it would certainly impact negatively on Ablett.( and our club's interests)
It wouldn't surprise me if he was jack of the GC and so wasn't being honest re his condition but I imagine people are just surmising that he actually said that-it's just too dumb, too careless.
Regardless, ox should never have said such garbage on the radio.

We all know that Ablett will retire if the deal won't get done... GC are just talking trash, because even though he is contracted, they don't have a lot of leverage...

Lang will be side-stepping around some of our more plodding players in years to come if we let him go. Unfair to be comparing a 21 year old who has suffered two broken legs, one pre-draft, and one this year, to some blokes on our list who we retained into their mid/late 20s who showed far less.

I think people have become too accustomed to us taking senior players in trade week who slot straight into the 22 considering they are already in their prime, that when we pick up some kids in the draft like Lang and Thurlow who don't cement a spot in their 1st or 2nd year, we instantly want to throw them to the scrap heap because they have 'failed'.

If he did that who would wanna play.for GC...

I agree which is why he shouldn't but he strikes me as the sort of guy who would let the red mist get in the way of good sense.

I'm inclined to believe the Ox. You're quite welcome to dismiss it, It's your right to do so.
