Greatest footy families

Re-read it to see if any four generations were mentioned. None there, but if you start counting marriages the Ablett family gets stronger as one of Senior's sisters married Michael Tuck so you can add the Tucks in with it.

Anyway, here's the link if you want to have a look yourself

Some massive games from Cloke the senior in that article. Might not get the credit he deserves at times.

Are there any examples of 4 generations playing top level football?

WHEN Melbourne draftee Charlie Spargo makes his AFL debut, his family will achieve a League record.

The former Murray Bushrangers pocket rocket, whom the Demons snared with pick No. 29 in the recent NAB AFL Draft, is set to make his clan the first to produce four successive generations of direct descendants to play League footy.

Other families have produced fourth-generation players but have either skipped a generation or the pedigree hasn't followed a direct line.

Here are the known cases of families with four generations of elite-level players:- ~~~

I reckon Smith family with Barassi the greatest families.
Very much before out time but Norm Smith and his brother influenced coaching and tactics massively. Furthermore Barassi basically lived as part of the Smith household as he was growing up as his father Barassi Snr died in the war. Barassi was influenced by his Dad and Smith brothers and then Barassi went on to influence many players and clubs such as people at Carlton and North. Basically the culture Barassi created in late 60's saw Carlton break a 21 year drought and then win 7 premierships over next two decades. He also helped North win their first and second premiership and had massive influence on guys like Blight and Robert Walls that also became premiership coaches. Blight got Cats into grand finals after not being any for two decades and also coached Crows to their only 2 premierships.

So for me the legacy the Smith and Barassi connection has down so many generations at various clubs is huge. Barassi got Sydney off it's knees as a club as a retired coach coming out of retirement to help the game in Sydney itself have a foothold.

Also Norm Smith Medal , the very fist time handed out was won by a relative. Wayne Harmes.

In South Australia always regarded the Williams family as something akin to influencing footy culture there in a big way.

But on the overall game itself, has to be Norm Smith and Barassi family. Hate to think how many flags they involved with directly or passed on part of their legacy to some player of theirs that became a coach too at other clubs for flag success. It just branches out so far wide and all started at oldest club in the game.

When you talk footy families, you could include coaching media and playing

You have

Not sure if they could do anymore in the footy world if they tried
Time will tell on the coaching but I'd definitely class the Cornes' media work as taking from the game not giving to it.

Andrew and Darren Jarman.

It's not totally footy related but a very good pedigree anyway.

Andrew and Darren Jarman are related to Ian and Greg Chappell (Cricket) as their grandfather is Victor Richardson (famous cricketer) and Victor Richardson daugter is Darren and Andrew Jarman mums mum.

Darren Jarman and Tyson Edwards are married via sisters (darren and tyson wife's are sisters) and they both have sons on AFL lists in Ben Jarman and Jackson Edwards.

The 3 generations of Murphy's would have to be just about the most consistent plus they all played for different clubs.
Leo Murphy - Hawthorn, 130 odd games and 2 x B & F winner
John Murphy - Fitzroy and SM, 240+ games and 5 x B & F winner
Marc Murphy - Carlton, 240+* games and 2 x B & F winner

Anthony, Terry, Neale and Chris all played in round 20 1990, the only time four brothers have ever played in the same match together.

Heath Shaw 262 games,
His brother Rhys 237 games,
His uncle Tony 313 games,
Uncle Neville 43 games,
His dad Ray 146 games

That’s 1001 games all up.
No idea if it’s a record, but’s an amazing achievement regardless.

Most games played by a set of bros:

Danihers are 752 games between the four of em.

Selwoods currently at 665 games between the four of em. 2 are still playing though, they might get close I reckon!
