5th game of the Eagles I've watched this season, and it has solidified my thinking that our priority for the offseason should be securing the signature of Lycett.

His ruck craft is first rate, knows how to use leverage to win contests and can tap with either hand. He also gets involved after the ruck contest by either tackling or blocking to clear space something none of our current rucks do. He also looks to have a bit of a mean streak to him, likes to make body contact at every occasion.

202cm, 100kgs and 25 you'd think he would have 5-6 years left, would be nice to be able to lock the ruck position away for a few years

He's alright as an FA for no picks but he's injury prone.

You'd never trade Kelly for just an upgrade would be madness. If Freo finished bottom 6 and us top 4 you'd probably consider say pick 5 + a 2019 pick (maybe their R2) for Kelly and 16 as 5 gets one of the King's IMO. But gee we rather retain Kelly and I doubt we trade him this year.

On the Gaff thing i'd rather keep Kelly but he'd be a good replacement, i would say backending contracts and the like would get around the $.

I watching Gaff V GWS and I dont see it but fair enough. He gets the ball no doubt.

I think the WC board think like he will have to be traded.. meanwhile if a Brander or someone like that asked to be traded... standback as the bonfire would burn hot.

Had a look at Branders highlights and remembered him. Do not like his ball drop... so id prefer others to be honest. I think the talls in this draft seem to be of a better standard.

On talls ..Id like someone who has seen our academy kid playing for the Falcons to give a report on him ..198cm & sounds interesting.

The talk of Gaff or McGovern for Kelly won’t ever happen. We act in good faith to all of our players, and if TK desperately wants to go home then we’ll look after the player first.

It this talk is all extremely premature. I suggest you all just enjoy watching him in the hoops.

Crameri is the real winner here, didn't cos us anything , rookie listed so his on minimum salary, and is on a way long back as he had interrupted preseason due to his hip. I honestly think he could be very useful for us as another target as were not sure on if Menzal will play the whole season with his body..

The Sun's NEAFL team today lost Brisbane's team with scores of 96 to 4 - the Suns had 11 AFL listed players including 5 first round picks and only managed to score 4 points.

Those players include Wright & Kade Kolodjashnij - I'd want to see more from players before even considering them, and I'd question what attitude some of those AFL listed players took into the match, because that's a pathetic result

It was but Wright has shown he can play at afl level as has Kade and they’re both still young.

I saw that.. they both seem to be massively out of form....

Id probably look at 2MP first... but either would be a coup.

I still reckon Wells has eyes on 2MP in his draft year but GCS took him before we took Cocky I think it was.

Will be interesting to see the sharks circle them both IMO.

Why would she not be 100% at the moment
- FACT he played his worst game in WA this year
- FACT the eagles didnt want him, when they could have had him
- WELLS should be sacked if he considers trading him for less than he cost on exposed form
- ANYWAY time to move on, we will not be trading him for Gaff, unless the deal is, eagles dont match gaff bid, and we trade kelly for pick 22 (as Kelly wants to go home), as we are too gutless to push teams on trades, and free agents

Ok. Hoping to restore a bit of calm as this whole TK thing is getting out of hand.

Firstly, the club would be doing everything they can to help the Kelly's with their relocation and be assisting in any way to help look after their young family. Moving to a footy club is a bit different than just moving interstate so I would imagine that some of the players partners would be offering their friendship and support as well. Clubs can be quite professional and caring for their players, partners and familys would certainly be high on the agenda.

As for TK signing a new contract would you just yet? What's he worth?

Might get an increase to around $350-$450 if he signs now, good result for both TK and the club. Or he plays the majority of the year and keeps this form up and commands $500 plus. Take family away for a second and this is just common sense and his manager would be incompetent if this wasn't being discussed.

Either way if he keeps this up Geelong will put a fair and reasonable offer in front of him and he'll have a year and a half to work it out. Let's leave it at that because we don't need threads that go into the thousands ...

Now these are two completely different scenarios, the 2nd one is a lot more understandable (still not acceptable).

I'm a believer in recruiting any player who is above replacement standard(the better players in the 2nd tier comps that aren't tied to a AFL list) for the right price. Poor performances in 2nd tier games can only make one question if they truly are above replacement level

Sorry to turn things back to Kelly, but am I the only one who thinks this whole family situation is getting blown out of proportion? I'm sympathetic, but he nominated for the draft FFS. This was always a possibility.

I acknowledge it and I see the challenges for the young family. But he's not a surgeon. He's not doing oncall or nightshift. When he's not playing footy, he's at home and if he isn't, then being in Perth won't fix that. He's soaking up a huge opportunity provided by the club. He has been embraced by everyone. If he were to capitalise, he will be making a stack of cash soon too. He is learning from three of the greatest midfielders of all time. He's got the keys to an awesome future. But if there's any sentiment that Geelong are also obliged to facilitate a smooth return to Perth at a time of his choosing because of his personal life...sorry, no deal.


Once he is out of contract, my understanding is- He's allowed to ask for a bigger contract, or to consent to Geelong negotiating a possible trade with a club ready to pay what he's after, or to refuse, de-list himself and take the draft, nominating a salary bid he hopes a club 'higher up' in his preferred list will accept.

The Eagles had their opportunity to draft him cheaply - not just last year but could have since 2014-2015.

That chance has passed. If they still want him at the end of 2019, they can have him. They will just have to pay up and pay overs. Eagles have no leverage here. The ball will be in their court.

If Eagles don't want to do the trade, he can accept our offer (which I'm sure would be generous) or walk. I have no problems with this approach- he was only a second round pick. If the GFC promotes a "we would rather accept something than nothing" policy, we just encourage crap trade offers, and embolden players to look past our offer on the table. It's funny how a club can find an extra first round pick when there is sufficient motivation.

If going home is his primary focus, he will get there. He went to the draft once, he can go again. He's a good player and will get picked up by Freo at the very least.

The whole go home thing cause his wife doesn’t have full family support sounds like a load of crap. The club provides as much support as it can, other players wifes have offered support, the parents have flown over and they have played in perth. TK doesn’t spend all day everyday at the club so has plenty of time to be at home with the wife and kids, he’s on good coin, with potential to make significantly more, and its only what, 8 years of this caper before he is at retirement age? etc etc etc.

They have it good. Its not like he is working 12 hour days 6 days a week on the tools, on a small wage with no support from anyone, and the wife has to work to make ends meet.

I gaurantee he is at home a hell of a lot more now than when he was as an electrician apprentice training and playing football, and going to tafe at night doing schooling.

Bloody hell if it’s too hard for them they may as well just pack it all in now.

Yep. Kelly will be 25 and a half years when his first contract expires - you'd imagine for most established AFL players the contract they receive when they are 24-26 years old will be the largest and longest of their career, with most of these players having 6-8 seasons under the belt, giving a fair indication to both club and player of their worth. It'd be difficult for Kelly and the club to work out just how much he should be on - and how long for, considering he has played just the seven games so far.

Basically, regardless of whether he was from Perth or Victoria, I feel the contract situation would be a difficult one for any mature age player who has shown as much as Kelly, and it seems only logical that they'd need close to the full two years to put a fair offer to him. Ie: his fellow draftees in Fogarty and Constable will get a modest extension after their initial draftee contract considering they'll likely still be fringe players at just 20 years, whereas Kelly at the conclusion of his draftee contract could very well be our best midfielder, and would have to be elevated to a similar price as a Duncan/Selwood type. It'd be unwise for him to sign a meagre extension at this stage, just as it'd be unwise for the club to offer him a top contract after seven games.

Or maybe, as a club, we care about our players not just as footballers but as people.
We don't take it so personally when they request a trade. Whether it's for personal or professional reasons.
And we don't try and rob clubs blind when it comes to trading our players out. We just do what is fair.
I know football is an emotional game and we as supporters (especially on BF) are super passionate but perhaps it's prudent to be a fair and reasonable club in every way possible because it creates good footballing synergy.

Yes you are/were on the money. No different to ports pick ups barring maybe Rockliff who has been injured. They are all exactly the same players they were last year. Throw in the questionable character for the bomber recruits and it was never going to be smooth sailing.
