Yeah it’s an interesting discussion point. Obviously still early in the season, but if Kelly (or his family at least) has said that he’ll leave as soon as his contract is up (we have no idea if they have of course) I can understand the talk around us looking to trade him early for a higher pick + in such a talented draft coming up this year.

If he did want to leave and Freo had like a top 4 pick.. I doubt they would do a straight swap.. We probably would have to give up a 2019 pick...

Freo have a R1 then basically nothing... at the moment its P7 then P79. Forget personal bias's .. would you want to trade away that type of pick for a very good prospect but one who is mid 20's.... in this draft? They may be able to get Hill or some other very good wa kid. At the least they would want something coming back... like a R2... which we do not have.

Or maybe, as a club, we care about our players not just as footballers but as people.
We don't take it so personally when they request a trade. Whether it's for personal or professional reasons.
And we don't try and rob clubs blind when it comes to trading our players out. We just do what is fair.
I know football is an emotional game and we as supporters (especially on BF) are super passionate but perhaps it's prudent to be a fair and reasonable club in every way possible because it creates good footballing synergy.
Just some thoughts...

When it it comes to trading if you want something of value, you have to give up something of value. We set the example ourselves when getting Dangerfield and Ablett. If a trade for Kelly is done in a similar spirit then no-one is getting robbed. But 24 months of this sort of form will command a steep price and WCE will need to pay.

At the end of the day, he will be a 25yo getting paid 500k to chase a football. That alone is compensation for any sort of family turbulence. I agree that no one should take it personally if he requested a trade as he needs to do what is right for him. By the same token though, he shouldn't take it personally if the GFC doesn't accept peanuts in return. If no trade can be done, Kelly can accept a generous contract or nominate for the draft. I know plenty of 25yo who could only dream of such a scenario.

I think clubs are too smart these days to not get a deal done though.
Hopefully Timothy decides to stay and this all won't matter.

He's contracted this year and will go nowhere unless either WA club pays serious overs. They are unlikely to hence we will revisit this at the end of 2019.

Freo have an early top 10 then about pick 60 so i reckon they will be reluctant to trade the top 10. Unless they are going to get real proactive and offer Cerra an extension and if he won't sign it suggest he and some picks should get traded for Kelly.

But really we are going to want a plug and play A grade replacement for Kelly or a pick high enough that guarantees us access to a quality KPF. Otherwise we will just hold him for another 12 months especially if we think we are a chance of winning a flag in 2019.

Waiting 12 months to use that pick hurts us in a flag window. We are either going to want an early top 10 pick (means we are unlikely to have to use it on F/S and can draft a quality KPF) or an A grade mature age replacement i think.

and the more I watch Kelly ... the more ..I do not think he is replaceable. Most of our kicks do not have the surgeon like touch he has.

Winning a flag might quell his desire to go home if it’s an issue next year, at the moment it’s all speculation but you’d think the other WA boys on our list would be in his ear about home sickness and family ect

But we all know Geel won't play hardball like Freo. If it's not that 1st pick then keep him for another 24 games. Big deal if those 24 games mean we lose another 10 draft places off his value as an uncontracted player after 2019. Don't think there is any difference at all btw picks 25 and 40 in a draft.

Poor Freo hey. They set the standard of bending over clubs when a player wants out. Now they live with it. When they ask us this year simply quote that exact paragraph that peanut spewed out after his first meeting with GC after Weller wanted out.

I'm sure we had multiple talks to TK pre draft who in return made commitments to us. It's a business we made a huge investments him.

The other thing to consider, and I know for a fact it’s been explained in crystal clear English to Kelly - is that it’s one thing to star in a midfield when you’re standing between Gaz, Danger, Duncan and Menegola and Selwood x 2. To be the second pea in the pod behind Nat Fyfe, in a side being flogged most weeks. That’s not comparing apples with apples.
