Japanese Buddhism has a long history of being very violent. Shintoism has become more like a series of rituals rather than an actual organised religion, it is nothing serious like any of the major religions coming out of the Middle East. Japan has a long history of being averse to the western form of religion in general. In fact, on the "atheist" scale in terms of countries, Japan would rate among top 2-3 if not no.1
