Paul Ahern was pick 7 and was traded for a token pick after 2 injury riddled years, I agree though that the Giants seem to rate Will a lot higher than other players they've moved on.

They should take more De Boer types. They’ll never win a flag with the amount of one way runners they have. Regardless of talent they’ll always be susceptible to pressure teams.

I see the Giants being far less willing to give up talent for picks this trade period after a nasty lesson in list depth this season.

That's the official story but I somehow don't think the AFL were like "do you agree to give the Giants these concessions OR do you prefer to give them less concessions".

Sometimes when you've got a crappy choice you pick the best out of 2 bad options.

Giants concessions were insane and on top of that I don't think the AFL gave much thought to what it would be like when they tanked the first 3 years or so on top of that.

I was sceptical about the expansion concessions but I don't think they've been too bad, despite the impact it had on rebuilding clubs (and Hawthorn's accident of history ).

Fremantle are the cautionary tale of offering too little, but with that natural supporter base could ride out two decades of mediocrity and slowly develop. The Brisbane Bears are probably more apt - a team without talent in an expansion market is dead on its feet - and Gold Coast are proof enough that generous concessions are a fraction of what's required for success. Perhaps GWS would be a powerhouse with better drafting, coaching and culture, but those are more easily promised than delivered, and now, subject to the same equalisation pressures as the rest of the league, they've had to shed sufficient talent that a bad run of injuries has hit them as hard as it would anyone, and even at full strength they can be matched by sides with no advantages at all.

Further, that Essendon have been garbage throughout the expansion period is hardly the fault of head office or their favourite children.

Not sure what his value would be, he hasn't had a single game over 30 touches so far this year which surprised me. Id say he would be in the pick 18-30 range, we would drive a hard bargain with this years 2nd i feel, cant say it would be an easy process after the Stringer business last year.

He's a better purely inside player than probably everyone we have right now (except for maybe Merrett). Will he still be better by the end of the year? I'd like to think that the gap can be closed (which might put him on the fringe of the best 22).

Yes depth, is great but if he's coming here it must be for game time (otherwise why does he leave?). Now that we finally seem to be getting a look at the inside options on the list, let's just see whether we can offer him game time.
