Surely we won't let Vlaustin run loose in defense this time. Man on man football is the way to play them.

That made my night. I had him written off for the year, but a finals return sounds delicioushttps://bit.ly/2vgAfRC
Tom Stewart out for 2-3 (). Actually though.
Scans have cleared him of major damage. Certain to miss against Richmond and in doubt against Hawthorn.
You would think so but Scott is coaching and Scott likes the unaccountable, zone off brand of footy.Surely we won't let Vlaustin run loose in defense this time. Man on man football is the way to play them.

Fogarty out Murdoch in
Stewart out thurlow in
It’s funny how only 12 months ago you put this down as a win because Richmond were our bunnies and just couldn’t beat us, but now we are all hoping they don’t torch us at the G.
Is this stupid??? Why would i rather play Richmond during the day instead of night time... For some reason Richmond looks more dangerous if they play at night time![]()
I agree. By "slightly further up the ground", I do mean "attacking half-back".I agree with the first paragraph although I think Henry will more than hold his own.
Guthrie stays back for mine. He’s not performing anywhere near his best but we must simply cross our fingers and hope that he finds form (not the most convincing plan, I know). We’re already lacking run and carry from defence and Stewart out only exacerbates the problem. Bews gives us nothing offensively so hopefully Thurlow, Guthrie (and Tuohy), can provide the run and carry.
Mm, I think it's still part of the overall makeup - especially given that they were quite ruthless when they did get the chance to move the ball quickly. However, yeah, the major factor was simply that we weren't able to stop Rance and Vlastuin from doing as they pleased.Tackling didn't really come into that game as a factor, when well over half of our I50s were marked by Richmond.
Correct me if I am wrong, But I was told Thurlow is in the top 10 players for there quickness at the club, I'm not saying O'connor isn't, But more than happy to see how the Deer in the headlights would go, considering your comments are based on a natural defender who has done a thorough apprenticeship, I find the comments on Thurlow quite amusing, How quickly we forget, was nominated for Nab Rising Star of Half Back, I believe his choice would be to play his roll for same reason he was Drafted ( Half Back Flanker ) some people have suggested his papers are stamped, I think he may just thrive in a new environment.
No side has played man-on-man since Melbourne was the last team to adopt cluster-based defence. Man-on-man football has gone the way of the drop-kick, the Robert Walls huddle and lead-up full-forwards.Surely we won't let Vlaustin run loose in defense this time. Man on man football is the way to play them.
This seems like wisdom for me. It's nothing to be too upset about. We're just not quite up to itWe're going to get seriously towelled. Our bottom 6 just aren't up for it yet.
Personally would set up a little like Richmond and have the following changes
Out Stewart, Guthrie
In: McCarthy, Jones
To have a forward line of Fogarty, McCarthy, Jones, Narkle, Parfitt would be equivalent to having Castagna, Rioli, Butler, Higgins Lambert
Then they have Reiwolldt and Caddy and we have Hawkins and Menzel
Put the same non stop pressure on their backs as they put on everyone elses and see how they stand up to it.
Run 4 smalls on Astbury, Grimes, Rance and Vlastuin. Keep the ball moving, keep tackling the big lugs.
I reckon they are as fallible as anyone else, it just isn't tested against them enough
Then throw further pressure by throwing Danger up there or Ablett, or Menegola
See how they run with pressure
Bews Blicavs Henry Blic on Reiwoldt all day
Tuohy Henderson Kolo Henderson on Caddy all day
Kelly Selwood Duncan
McCarthy Hawkins Parfitt
Fogarty Menzel Narkle
Stanley Dangerfield Ablett
Menegola Jones Cunico S.Selwood
S.Selwood on Cotchin all day
Let Martin and Danger run to see who dominates
Get Stanley to use his speed to trouble Nankervis
Although they have a more available team, I think we could stand up to them playing them at their own game
Tell Kelly, Parfitt, Narkle and Jones to bring on the magic and bamboozle them
Have Fogarty and McCarthy around Rances hips all day
Excited for this one, I hope they select well
You might be new to the game but do not appear new to the 'whipping boy' narrative, Guthrie as the latest target. Who's "we", you and your other name?Lets not worry about Taylor and Stewart, put a little thought in to Guthrie, Kolo, and Bews, did they have 20 possessions between them, there out put was very poor, Thurlow replaces Guthrie, Guthrie picked up 3 or 4 possessions in junk time to give him 11 in Total and got a cheap one off Scooter, we called it last week and I think the Debate on Guthrie is very strong ( Below par for a best 22 player ) Mids and Forwards are pushing back big time to cover for this Back line Group, and just for the Record, don't be surprised if young Zuthrie doesn't fill the void.
Thurlow has a good record on smalls, he was rated in the comps best small defenders in 2015. If O'Connor was so good against the hawks why did he get chopped. Are you related? There is no comparison Thurlow is in form . O'Connor averaging just 11 off a wing half back in twos is not, I'm not sure where you are coming from pushing his case.We have enough backs out of touch in the AFL Bews Kolo Guthrie... BUT i guess whoever Scarlo picks can't do any worse than those three on Saturday. In terms of a direct sprint I don't know who's quicker but I've noticed O'Connor's running strength a number of times and I've never noticed it with Thurlow.
I disagree that Thurlow's a natural defender especially not on smalls where he loses them regularly. He's good in the air and can find the ball but I cringe at the idea of him marking Rioli, Higgins or Castagna. Sadly the main reason he's spent most of his time recently on a wing is because his defensive work has been poor.
In comparison O'Connor was shifted into defence when we were chasing the game against the hawks and stood up pretty well considering we were throwing numbers forward. I think he's more suited to defence than the wing because the wing requires creativity by foot and knowing when to run forward of the ball which aren't his strengths at the moment.
But we're playing Richmond and there's a clear method to beating them.
1. Smash then at the contest so you can dominate field position like we did last time.
2. Don't let their defenders dominate the air and rebound. Massive fail from us last time.
3. Play safe coming out of defence to turn it into a contested game and not let them create dangerous turnovers with their pressure. We did this well barring Kolo's brain fade.
4. Get back quickly and defend their smalls well. We did this well for parts of the last game.
I'm not a hater of Thurlow but he has his strengths and weaknesses. A rebounding defender/winger who struggles to defend smalls just isn't suited to this type of opponent. In contrast O'Connor's game style fits much better with him playing well at VFL level as a lock down defender. I'm not saying O'Connor is way better than Thurlow but considering their strengths and the opponent I think the choice is pretty clear.
Keep going with the Guthrie out call. It’s comical now.Personally would set up a little like Richmond and have the following changes
Out Stewart, Guthrie

He doesn’t help out in the ruck. He is a witches hat in the ruck.Cant understand the posters who want Henry moved back - someone 6ft 4 inc who also helps out in the ruck - and has looked really good at CHF
Richmonds forward line - Short ( who can also kick the ball a mile ) Rioli Lambert Castanga Baker - i reckon all those blokes are well under 6ft - but are lightning quick
Geelong need another small backman like Bews but they havent got one - they have got an unbalanced list with a plethora of half forward flankers - McCarthy Parsons Gregson Jones Narkle Crameri Fogarty
Watched most of the Rich v Coll replay - Richmonds big advantage over Geel i think is that they have a pace advantage all over the ground - i want it wet Friday night - that neutralises Rich advantage
