Under the common law, before it was codified, both unconsciousness and broken bones were commonly considered serious injuries for the purpose of intentionally cause serious injuries

They’re both bad. Why is that rocket science for some

Most people have short attention spans.

I have no doubt if Brayshaw was concussed but did not have a broken jaw people would still be calling for Gaff's head and saying how serious concussions are. But because the reverse has occurred some people are adamant that a broken jaw is much worse.

I was arguing against one of your mob saying a broken jaw wasn’t as bad. Think we are arguing the same thing Scotland

Yep, just trying to keep the focus on stamping out punching. You get it, the AFL don't.

No it wasn't, Hall's was a full blooded punch, Gaff's was a swing that copped him in the jaw. Now the results are the same so he has to cop it. Best case scenario is four weeks given his excellent record, five a definite possibility, which would mean he could be back for the grand final. But six is a possibility.

You can't be serious...it was a roundhouse to the chin... did you see the leverage he got. He is lucky he only broke the kids jaw

I think it's entirely reasonable to assume that people at the ground didn't see the hit - Cearly the umpire and the players didn't see it initially either

The whole culture of hysteria and trying to one up each other on outrage is pretty over the top

I remember when Jay Schulz copped a really bad finger in the eye in a Showdown and dropped to the ground, but the Crows supporters thought he took a dive (because at first glance that's what it looked like) Port posters still go on about 'scum bag Crows booing an injured player' even though it was entirely reasonable to assume that noone realise the severity of the eye injury at the time

Just like I'm sure Freo posters will hang onto WC cheering Gaff as some kind of proof that they are scum too

Most Eagles posters have said the hit was crude and he will cop what's coming to him

stop being so hysterical about everything

But without the outrage on BigFooty how will Chief pay for his Monaco mansion and superyacht?

It's all speculative clickbait at the moment. The fact two QCs had to weigh in with (in my opinion) irrelevant crap shows just how big this thing is in WA.

He agreed that it would open a huge can of worms which why he suggested the AFL provide him a heavy suspension so that the police do not get involved. Also he said it was the worst case of assault on the footy pitch that he's ever seen.

Hyperbole? I don't know. He sounded serious. And he obviously is a defending attorney, not a prosecuting one. So who knows?

Tom Percy, the same Tom who regularly gets on radio saying incarceration should be the absolute last resort and does nothing to stop crime?

The same Tom Percy who quit 6PR because they wouldn't play the Rumpole of The Bailey music before his segment?

The same TP who is rabid anti all things eagles?

The same TP who will voraciously defend murderers, drug dealers and those guilty of sexual assault and demand that the public should have no voice in determining sentencing?

The same TP who is an unabashed hypocrite?

Worse event happened in the NRL about 6 weeks ago and nobody said boo. And it wasn't one punch. It was a guy pounding the bejeezus out of another guys eye. No police, charges or people from the education department mentioned at all.

Julian Knight pulled the same defence after Martin Bryant beat his high score.

Hey - I still think the fact that he has a broken jaw is relevant. Let’s not pretend it isn’t relevant Scotland. It clearly is and should be

I have no idea if it is the same guy you have a hardon for or not.

Quite interesting that a WC supporter insists on playing the man not the ball. A pattern perhaps?

A useful contribution in this context would perhaps be an informed opinion arguing that this is not an assault. Any chance you could find one?

Its pretty weird now that the most hot headed, ill thought out and silly comments have come from the Eagles CEO. He should have taken time to calm down and think rationally before acting as rashly as he has.

No insight. He clearly was trying to calm the farm and ended up pouring a gallon of petrol on it.......

Says a lot about the culture of that club......

Gaff has never been reported, fined or suspended in 175 games. Bizarre.

If you polled 100 Eagles supporters before the game and said one will break a Freo player's jaw in the derby, 0 would say Gaff. It's the textbook definition of 'out of character' - if you believe in that.

Definitely relevant, but I'd like to leave assessing that to people who actually know what they're talking about rather than rabid fans on the internets. The tribunal will hear the case tomorrow.

Even if Brayshaw suffered no concussion or broken jaw the incident still warrants a significant suspension IMO.

A single concussion can lead to lifetime problems. A broken jaw is much less likely to do so. I say this as someone who has had both from footy :)
Can’t really compare broken jaws though as someone pointed out to me earlier in this thread. Lewis broke Cripps’ jaw last year under near identical circumstances, but Cripps was still able to play the next week. Brayshaw can’t even eat solids for a month, will probably require dentures. Big difference

Right. So no-one noticed the Freo player laying on the ground, being helped by trainers?
of course they did. But there was no replay to show how it happened!! How is this hard for you to understand? The hit was off the ball, and no replays were shown. Overwhelming majority of people at the ground would have been watching the player with the ball when Gaff swung at Brayshaw. If you cant comprehend this then maybe you need to check out of the thread.

Tom Percy is in it for himself and the headlines. I am sure he is a top lawyer but I'd rather not get a lawyer's opinion on incidents between players on the field in AFL games until a player is actually charged with an offence.

I just think its amazing that those who saw it happen didnt pass the word around, packed stadium and all that. Unbelievable really.

“Out of character”

How many afl players would you say that’s in character? I would be perplexed if anyone from the pies did that. I’d say that about nearly every player in the league except maybe a handful.
You'd think only angry guys would do it, but Gaff did it who is very quiet and lightly spoken so who knows
