I meant that if McVeigh was working a lot with the midfield group during the preseason, then it would be disruptive to suddenly switch to completely different coaches for the midfield. Especially with the rushed preparation for the next game.

In preseason McVeigh was doing a lot of stoppage drills with the midfielders. Even overseeing a 3 vs 3 drill from a ball up would be getting the senior midfielders working as a unit.

Isn't that kind of our error of judgment then to give such an important role to the least experienced coach?

He's never coached !

Neither has Maxfield, but here we are.

Maxfield has never been an assistant coach and still lives in Melbourne as far as I'm aware. Its hard to keep someone on when you need to cut positions when they're not at the club full-time and their role can be filled by others (how well can be debated). McVeigh hasn't taken Maxfield's job, that has been done by some unknown analyst who is likely taking on triple the workload now as are most of the remaining 25.

Where questions can be raised over McVeigh is the decision to pick him over Tadhg for the midfield coaching position, particularly as Tadhg could double up to help the defence if needed.

Sam Mitchell went from playing to wce midfield coach the following year which netted a flag, this notion that you need to have experience in coaching to be a senior assistant is ridiculous.

Reckon McVeigh would be equally experienced in the backline as Kennelly, given he played the back end of career there.

Kennelly has 9 years of coaching under his belt and they'd rather go with Johnson, Cox & McVeigh. McVeigh has been coaching over the offseason as well - the Swans clearly see more in that small period than they saw with Kennelly since 2018

In saying that this hasn't got to do with McVeigh but it's all about Kennelly and who the Swans felt they'd keep - from all the coaches they currently have

Your last part is correct that's all . Stewie has lived in Manly for years and now has a baby daughter . Has not lived in Melbourne for over 20 years.

Mitchell went to another club

My mistake, it was my understanding that he moved back to Melbourne upon retirement and did his job for the club based out of Melbourne.

No worries Rob. Has family still here and sometimes would stay down after Melbourne games , like some players. Hope he gets back on , he is the Bloods

I hope so too. He is the one person who doesn't get enough credit for what he did for this club as a player and to see him in this position is a little unfair compared to others as you rightly point out. Hopefully his role resumes once this crap goes away

Correct , everyone talks about Kirky , but Maxi was the man and such a shame he had to pull the pin due to injury . He dis deserve a flag.

$$$$$
That's what it comes down to.
Tough on Maxi but I can understand the need to keep Macca.
He has footy smarts & is highly rated by the entire competition so we would have lost him in a heartbeat.

Plus as a first-year coach he probably costs a lot less
I hate that the club has had to part ways with the one man who was the very soul of the bloods cultures and a Premiership player. But if there's a genuine need for assistants to be able to wear many hats then Macca would seem a logical choice. He's got midfield and defence smarts and he was always dangerous when he went forward. He's not inexperienced. He was playing while learning to coach in his last years, organising the Swans defence and, when not playing, sitting alongside Horse et al in the coaches box on match day. I don't envy the club having to make such a difficult choice.

Not surprising one our leaders would be interested in a best of 3 GF series. 2014 is one of the biggest mulligans you would ever want and 2016 was questionable at worst.

I wonder if we win 2012 if Hawthorn had a 2nd and 3rd crack that year?
