To be fair a part of me feeling this way would be due to the eagles not going so flash at the moment. But saying that would we have beaten GC or Lions anyway with a normal season structure? Likely not.

Where do we draw the line and agree this season is glorified exhibition games? Of course the AFL won't. The media who's livelyhood relies on the AFL won't.
3 months in between rounds.
17 round season.
Fixtures thrown out the window and being made up on the fly.
Games shortened by 16 minutes actual playing time.
A game postponed until who knows when.
Crowds not allowed at games.
A side likely to be forced to play with 1/4 of its team unavailable.
A player suspended for having a media interview at his house. (I understand why, but seriously...)
4 clubs forced to live away for a month - where not one has won a game yet except the one played among themselves.

And thats only 3 weeks in. What more is going to happen over the next 14 rounds and 4 weeks of finals...

The management of this season has been fantastic. The league still has the flexibility to make it all work. The weekend's events justify that.
Even if it was the worst case scenario, being Essendon playing interstate, no one at risk would have even gotten to the airport thanks to the same day travel arrangements. There is only ONE club that has been compromised by this, and an infection in one state would not have compromised another, as it may have with usual travel for games.
Thanks to shortened quarters, postponed games will be able to be rescheduled with minimum effect on integrity. The hard restrictions appear to have been enforced by the league as numerous players have been suspended for even minor infringements.
Unless you think the correct call was just to give up on the season, the AFL has done an exemplary job of bringing football back safely.

Not really a huge issue with the shortened quarters. Thursday - Wednesday - Sunday for Melbourne and Friday - Wednesday - Sunday for Essendon.

Cant be a huge issue for Melbourne when all 18 clubs would have agreed that multiple games may need to be played during the week its why the AFL put in shorter qrts etc.

It is an abnormal season......but there is no way the AFL weren't going to play at all if they could avoid it. THere are thousands of jobs at stake as well as the longer term financial health of the game. People seem unable to make this connection

Ultimately a 17 rounds season will be played and a premiership will be awarded. I for one am getting in to it

We're terrible off that short turnaround usually. I'd guess that there will be at least one other affected game this season for similar reasons, so they might end up waiting until later in the season to see how many make-up games need to be played.

McGowan has the highest unemployment rate in the country despite the mining industry.

The mining industry is one of the few positives in the Aussie economy ATM, and is actually employing more people (in support roles such as Security, catering, housekeeping etc..) than it did before the lock down. I should know because after almost 2 years unemployment I got a FIFO Security role. If mining stops so does the Aussie economy so be thankful, not critical of McGowan, that he is ensuring it is being protected.
I would also ask the question, is low unemployment more or less important than preventing community spread and threatening the health of the people and vital industry?

You are putting blame on a victim of a virus derived from a pandemic, of which we are the worst-hit by in this state.

McKenna's positive case is less of an indication of him as a person, and says more about the environment we are under.

Anyone is suseptible to this virus - anyone. Players from your team, our team (even after a McKenna's recovery) - your mother, my friend. It is absolutely disgraceful, foolish and disgusting for you to blame an asymptomatic player for suffering from a virus that can show no symptoms and has the longest incubation period (unlike any other illness, outside of pandemic).

This is an exceptional time, and in this time, we have afforded many reliefs to many disadvantaged people - whereas in any other times, things like jobkeeper, rent/mortgage deferrals, special shopping hours, would be seen as an unfair leg up to those hard-done by - but in this time, we have recognised the difference, and in realisation of that, we have changed our rules and our approach to normal day-to-day life.

With any other issue you would not see Best 22 100% healthy and able players sidelined - and that turns a competition into a farce. The only viable solution is to pause the comp (which is what the shortened quarters and season is for) and re-launch after the dust settles with hubs, which would heavily prevent more cases in the COVID capital of Australia.

We are on the verge of a farce competition that is about who can escape the contagiousness of others, rather than their effort by doing their job.

This could have been any player, I think everyone should just lay off on the guy. It's not like he went out and partied hard against club rules, for all we know he went to his local supermarket and someone sneezed behind him.

Most likely he visited family and friends and didn't think twice, just like a few players in other teams have already done and he ended up being one of the unlucky ones.

I think in regards to the fixture Essendon and Melbourne play later in the year where hopefully things might be settling down a bit and Travis Auld has more of a handle on the fixture.
Say round 13, Melbourne play on a Thursday night, Essendon play on the Friday.
Both these sides meet on the Tuesday, Melbourne having that extra days break 5 to 4 and for round 14 they play Sunday games.
