Autopsy Round 4 = GWS 66-64 Collingwood

I can't get over how ridiculously similar that game felt to the prelim. Close all game, Giants get a third quarter run on (albeit 3 goals instead of 5), including an annoying Cameron goal, which we pull back in to level.

And Mayne misses a very gettable set shot...

And we have a few chances but can't kick that one goal.

Blah.

It was a Carbon Copy of PF

The mids delivery into our forwardline is consistently shithouse. Hardly ever is the ball put to the advantage of our forwards, while every other team seems to be capable of picking out targets at will.
Because our forwards are below par. As a mid you look up and you want to see a forward on the move demanding the ball not standing a kick down the line as motionless as a statue. Notice when Stevo would present early we had no problem hitting him

Haynes seemed to be playing on WHE who was hiding behind him and no chance of interrupting his marking capacity. I didn't think Hayne was more influential than Moore (or Howe) who had much better quality opposition in Cameron. WHE didn't make him earn much tonight.

Hayne is a gun and probably AA this year.

WHE catted it up like he can.

Thought their pressure was at a super high levels and our guys toward to bottom end of our 22 for the most part struggled. Further, those that are a bit hit and miss struggled which does typically happen in high pressure games. Individuals have been highlighted throughout the thread.
Like others i thought we were a touch fortunate to be 1 point behind at 3/4 times, but we hung in and scrapped a few goals late in the third.

From 1 point down, with something like 15 to 4 inside 50's, 6 shots to 2 ( including 4 set shots! ) in the last quarter , you would take those circumstances 100 times out of a hundred. To lose is a very disappointing outcome, also of concern is the same guys miss the same shots over and over.

Laughable comment - the contribution of Pendles to the team on gameday is beyond reproach.
I'd be happy with 22 Pendleburys - and couldn't care less how they react after a loss.
Clearly satirical.

Pump the breaks people. We played sh*t, and still only lost by 2 points to last years Grand Finalist, on their own ground, at virtually full strength. All is not lost. Plenty to work on and time left in the year to get it right.

The concern is many of the same issues are present that have been for the last few years with this list. Many of the same players making the same mistakes or not being involved or going missing when the opposition get physical.

The game plan is also the same Blitzkrieg first quarter then defend the lead and play dumb slow strangle footy.

Will Kelly developing into a key forward, so no need to do anything with Moore.

Moore could be a star forward genuinely believe he would be in the same conversation as the top 3 KPF if given the chance to stay there, unless Kelly has added a lot of xfactor to his game he will likely be a work horse type fwd.

agree. Tyler is the first out. Daicos and callum have earned one more game.

problem with Cox is exactly what Kane Cornes said: we Become predictable with him. Long ball to the square every time.
Need to play Cox deep out of the square, keep him isolated, open space and have him leading to space created.

Moore's only time at forward will only be if they need him for a few moments. But they'll never put him down forward full time. He is playing the best football I have ever seen of him down back.

What a nonsense.

Pretty sure we chased Tom Lynch hard while Buckley was coach. Effective tall forwards aren't that easy to find. Look at players like McCartin, Patton, Schache, all of whom have had top 3 draft picks utilised on them, for very little return.

Ben Brown is an exception, but recent excellent tall forwards have often come from priority draft selections - Lynch (GCS), Cameron (GWS) which we haven't had access too

and look at the AFL goal kicking at present
- Tom Papley, Harry Perryman, Charlie Cameron, Toby Greene......Brodie Mihocek
We've actually got the highest scoring tall forward in the competition playing for us and he is a rookie selection.

There are not that many high scoring tall forwards in the competition. Guys like Riewoldt and Hawkins have been around forever.

The next generation are the King boys at GCS and St Kilda, both of whom were top 6 draft picks and you don't get too many of them when you keep finishing Top 4.

This is not an easily solvable problem with a salary cap and without top 10 draft picks. Maybe we revert to Darcy Moore as an option again once Will Kelly comes on. But Darcy is currently a star down back and helps set up our miserly defence.

I think Patton is one we should of went after, his best is definitely quality the injury history his biggest issue.

Also think Sam Day (GC) would make a good forward for us better then what we have anyway in Cox/Cameron. Brings a lot more to the table in his overall game.

Also annoys me how we default our one top 5 KPF draftee to defence and have left him there even if he is AA quality defender I have no doubt he would be an AA quality forward which imo are much harder to find.

But thats because they allowed him time in the role over 4 seasons to build it, Moore up forward now he is actually a grown man would also be electric.

Yep. Going by last time we played GWS we have not Imporved at all and Made Same Mistakes

people need to forget about that. It's not happening.

All the Wills hate is rubbish. Him and Adams were the only two guys who looked like they wanted the ball around stoppages, not to mention his tackle pressure was a plus given the amount of times GWS spread easily from a contest. He's not a star, but once again everyone is acting as though Sier is some proven gun and twice the player of Wills. Criticisms of Wills being a limited footballer can be applied to Sier just as easily.

Patton is Exactly the KPF we need

He followed his opponent number 12 Green in to every stoppage and his opponent kept getting first hands on it which is why in the last 2 minutes we struggled to clear the ball. Green had 7 clearances alone and thats not including the copious amounts of times he held the ball up after a stoppage by getting first dibs, he was also the number 1 score involvement player for GWS.

Sometimes high tackles is also a sign of being constantly second to the ball.

I think it's fine if Cox actually marks the ball. The problem is we played him in wet and dewy conditions. That was never going to work, cause if Cox doesn't mark it, he's useless at ground level. In those conditions, he's a deadset liability.

Yeah, we didn't deserve to win based on that effort. GWS wanted it more and outworked us. They put on immense pressure, and players being unable to handle that pressure plus the dewy conditions is what cost us, as we didn't apply the same amount of pressure on them anywhere near enough. Tbh, we were lucky to be close, so I don't mind the loss that much, as it's a good wakeup call. The real sting is losing Howe for potentially (and probably likely) the rest of the season.

We were +11 in contested possession - so your premise is incorrect.

Say what you want about Cox, at least he can kick for goal when it matters unlike at least half a dozen others.

Yep it's pretty embarrassing when you've played your whole life and can't kick 35 metres when your team needs it yet a American can.

I never said specficially at the contest. There are other areas where they could've outworked us. For a lot of the night, most of our forward line were stagnant and didn't move, and didn't chase or put on pressure.
