Will Collins caught my eye in the WA All stars games, provided interception, run and carry and was clean.

Swan Districts colts coach Simon Bergin urges recruiters to look at defender Will Collins

Swan Districts colts coach Simon Bergin has urged AFL recruiters to take a punt on Will Collins.

All the draft talk at Bassendean is about pick one fancy Denver Grainger-Barras, who is making a name for himself down back in the seniors, and fellow State Academy members, big-bodied midfielder Zane Trew and dashing half-back Ty Sears.

But Bergin reckons Collins, who impressed as a key defender in round one after a frustrating 2019 campaign ruined by injury, is also worth a look.

The 18-year-old Mazenod College product stood tall in defence against West Perth, taking seven marks and gathering 14 disposals.

“He’s just a strong, powerful kid from Mazenod College. He’s had some injuries over the last few years but he’s grown heaps,” Bergin said.

“We’ve been playing him at full-back and he’s been playing some super footy.

“He’s got a big left foot on him, plays really aggressive and is worth a watch.”

Bergin said excitement machine Jamison Ugle was another one to watch.

“He’s an interesting player and there’s a bit of X-factor about him, when he gets his tackle pressure right he looks pretty good,” he said.

Big men Jack Allen and Ryan Letessier have been promoted to the reserves, leaving Brodie Morris and Kaedyn McPartlan to battle it out in the ruck against fast-improving 204cm giant Kalin Lane.

Medium-sized forward Kobi Martin will debut for the Tigers, likewise with Northern Territory talent Joseph Salmon for the visitors.

In-form midfielder Logan Young will skipper the home side and is likely to get the job on Swans ball magnet Zane Trew in another game-defining match-up.

“He’s as committed as I’ve seen from a young man.” Angus said.

“He’s a team-first player and was a leader of our group from day one. I was really impressed with his performance against Subi’s Matty Johnson and Jed Kemp in round one.”

He's our man. I now feel it in my waters.

Naughton v2. Let him start preseason under our new coach, Brian Houston from Hillsong Church, tomorrow.

I won't be complaining if we call him out with our first pick.

Murray Bushrangers, NAB League / Wodonga
Height: 189cm
Weight: 80kg

Medium forward who is a beautiful natural mover with strong, clean hands and elite kicking skills either foot. An All-Australian at Under 16s level in 2018 he stepped up to play all four matches with the Victorian Country Under 18s team last year averaging 13.5 disposals and four marks confirming his AFL potential. Starred in two representative games at Under 17s level firstly versus New Zealand at Marvel Stadium and then for Team Brown at the MCG on 2019 AFL Grand Final day gathering 24 disposals in each game with five goals overall. Awarded the Cameron Ling Medal for the NAB AFL Academy’s most professional bottom aged prospect to cap a great year. Unfortunately injured his ACL in preseason training early this year but is on the road to a full recovery and putting that disappointment behind him. Father Ben played 8 games for Richmond before becoming a star for West Adelaide in the SANFL.

He looks an amazing prospect.

Its nice to have a pick at the top of the draft for a change.

Med Fwd sure but if hes getting 24 touches im assuming hes pushing up into the midfield at times.

I think it's a valid concern if someone hasn't played a lot of midfield at junior level how well they'll adapt (ie - for every Jy there's probably 2-3 Rayners) but I guess that's where recruiters earn their money.

The AFL has warned clubs they should not expect to be fully compensated for the departure of their superstar free agents.
In an email seen by the Herald Sun, the league has made clear clubs should not expect entirely equivalent returns for any player which exercises their free agency rights after eight years’ service.
The document also details how the AFL determines the compensation picks based on free agents’ new salaries and their age.

However, there is an “expert committee” which reviews all pick outcomes and can recommend changes to the league’s general counsel in the event of an “anomalous result”.
Greater Western Sydney is slated to receive pick No.10 as compensation for Jeremy Cameron’s move to Geelong — if they do not match the Cats bid under the free agency model — but the Giants are determined to force a trade to secure a more attractive outcome.
Likewise Essendon (Joe Daniher) and Adelaide (Brad Crouch) want first-round compensation picks for their departing stars, but may have to settle for end-of-first round selection picks.
Crouch’s new salary at St Kilda will be significantly less than $700,000 a year, it was confirmed on Thursday.
But the AFL told clubs this week they should not expect bumper compensation pick returns for free agents.

The AFL memo said the compensation formula was “NOT DESIGNED to fully compensate a club for the loss of a player”.
Instead, the league advised the picks were designed to “reflect the relative values of various players to one another” after eight or more years of service to one club.
The scene is set for tense talks between clubs as the Cats have no plans to give up any of their three first-round picks to GWS in a trade.

Cats’ pair Esava Ratugolea and Brandan Parfitt are also off the trade table, their managers have confirmed.
In the AFL document, the league detailed the five bands which determine the compensation picks, based on the “age of player” and their “average guaranteed payments – base plus ASA (additional service agreements)”.
Players must be in the top-five per cent of earners for their age bracket to trigger first-round compensation.
Top 15 per cent of the pay scale triggers an end-of-first-round pick. Top 30 per cent is a second-round selection.
Top 50 per cent is an end-of-second-round pick. Top 70 per cent is third-round.
