That's an interesting question. Virtue signalling used to be done in religious congregations to maintain particular social structures. Basically people would virtue signal that they weren't larrikins.

Isnt it ironical that a "purists" footy show like Marngrook was canned for "budgetary reasons" even though it was commentating on arguably the most viewed sport in Australia. And channel 9 flushed thousands on cretins like Fevola and Lehmann who are frankly carnival acts.
