Too many people are seeing Ben King as the Holy grail IMO.
I can see us burning too much to land him , then having big problems elsewhere.
The Kings are 202cm once in a generation type KPP’s. To have 2 of them would be almost unstoppable to defend. Most teams have the ability to cover 1 player like that, but trying to cover 2 would be almost impossible. we’ve seen what max has done the last month. He has dominated! Now add his brother who’s kicked more goals than him this year.
It also provides us an option to essentially replace Ryder, by having Ben chop out Marshall in the ruck.

it really highlights how lucky you need to be to win a flag. Richmond never lost Dusty in 17/19/20.Brownlow norm smiths etc.
This is why I'm all about seeing off Seb, JB and Dunny. Peeps here bang on about having depth, but truth is that if you have to dip too deep into it you ain't gonna make let alone win a GF.

The focus must be on assembling the best 24-25 players you can manage, and keep them on the park.

I understand that fear. I have it too.

But how could he not be the holy grail. I have limited knowledge of AFL history, but when has any other team had the chance to pick up two incredibly young, incredibly talented, once in a generation forwards like that. AND THEY’RE ****ING TWINS!!! People joke like, imagine if we had jack and nick Riewoldt playing on the same team, imagine if we had Naughton and King we’d be unstoppable. This is that and arguably better. It’s the type of mystified and totally lucky scenario that we as a club need to give us some edge. Granted, I reckon we’ll be absolutely fine if Bing doesn’t come and we build the team up the right way for Max and co. But if he does come, then the lid is well and truly off. Ask any Oppo supporter you like, they would fear coming up against both Kings. I almost reckon they would just build the team around them, like gravity forcing players to step up and pull them closer to such a dominant forward duo.

Honestly the stuff of legends IMO. I’m the same age as the Kings. When they used to play together against my old high school I heard they absolutely dominated. Scary stuff. And I can imagine telling my grand kids in 2080 how a ****ing massive speedy pair of twin forwards staunched the comp and helped win St. Kilda their second cup. Of course, I’d probably be the clubs no. 1 ticket holder by 2080 but that’s another story.

It’s possible. I can see it too, but with the morale of the supporters being low we might just need the quick hit drug fix of Ben King

Clarko seems too loyal to take over from Ratten considering they're good mates. Apparently he is still pissed off how Carlton treated Brendon Bolton
That’s also why I don’t think he’ll take Dew’s job. They’re mates from a long way back. Dew single handedly won him a premiersii hi p

If you have an issue paying 2 1st round picks for Ben, would you be happy to take 2 1st round picks for Max?

Absolutely no way you can consider Ross and jb top 50 players. And dunny is not a top 20 mid. If they were so great, other teams would be clamouring to get them.
They were well paid because we had to spend the money and they were the best of a bad bunch.

Not any more but Seb was close at one point. 2018 he ranked at 23, 2017 he was at 31. 2019 Billings was ranked at 35. Billings was 48. Seb has been pushed out of the midfield set up and last year struggled with injury and form. People are quick to write off players with form slumps but they were our best players for a while. Dunstan wasn't but his late season form makes him handy depth at the very least and if you had the worst performing of him, Crouch of Jones pushed out to Sandy until they ran a spot back you would have a very enviable set up especially if you can phase a younger mid in over the next 2 to 3 years as they get set to retire.

They aren't stars they are the top end of GOPs that are getting the kind of money better players usually get. We might find some clubs do clamber to get them. Players like Saad, Williams and Hill are on superstar money so it happens. Hopefully they sign on on heavily reduced contracts for sake of our continuity though.

If we ever traded max fold the ****ing club. It would be the stupidest thing ever to trade a key forward that young who hasn’t even hit his prime yet. Generational.

Harder from the perspective that they will all be less valuable in terms of picks as I believe they have all reached their ceiling.

What do you think they'd get in compo? I doubt that gets down in any big way.

I think that's his point, why would GC want to do unless they absolutely pillage us.

As long as it's not like the Lockett years where we had to spend it watching them dominate and still lose every week.

"Need some support our forwardline and our ruckstocks...we'll have to find someone who can go in that front end and play beside Max."

From Ratten's press conference yesterday, that does sound like they're after a McLean type. If that is the plan, presumably the long term play is Marshall in the ruck while King, Membrey and McLean are maybe as the three talls. Sharman in the mix too.

If we do bring in McLean, I'd probably trade Battle, unless they see him becoming a key defender. I don't see him getting a go as a forward with so many in the mix.

WHAT IS KING’S SUNS FUTURE?

GOLD Coast is still extremely optimistic Ben King will re-sign over the summer and push his time at the club past 2022.

And the million dollars of cap space the club saved when it moved Peter Wright to Essendon will help get that deal done.

King will wait until he returns to pre-season training to consider a new deal — he is on a two-year contract worth a total of $1.3 million — but he likes coach Stuart Dew and wants to build something special with his teammates.

But any delay in putting pen to paper would see a lot of clubs, including Essendon and even Collingwood, come from the clouds and create a possible bidding war if he remained unsigned at the end of 2022.

The Suns took a kicking for moving on Wright, who couldn’t get a kick in last year’s reserves practice matches.

They are paying around $150,000 of what was a $650,000-per-season salary for 2022 and 2023, with Wright now on a three-year deal that spreads out that cash over a longer term.

Wonder if they end up sacking dew like a couple of people in the media have said will happen. If that is gonna impact on any contract convos with king.

GC would not say anything but they are extremely optimistic. What else can they say?

I hope so, but i must have been on the flat planet too long and gotten cynical.
Pretty sure that Joe Daniher, Boyd, even Patton all got that once in a generation tag at some point.

The McEvoy trade has to be viewed in isolation. Not a reflection on which you pick out all the players you wished we drafted.

if the success of that trade came down to who we drafted, then it was a success to position us in that situation in the first place. The failure of the pick has so many variable that extend way past the initial deal. So if your going to judge that trade like that. Then we continue judging that trade off the Dunstan compo - if he decides to leave.

secondly there are a number of people who want Dunstan extended on this board alone. Savage was decent for a number of years.

McEvoy wasn’t going to be the difference between us winning or losing games of football. He is a poor tap ruckman. Amazing mark. We were at the start of a rebuild.
Agree,he was a poor tap ruckman but excellent mark around the ground.
Think the year we traded him he had close the poorest stats of all the rucks at centre bounces

It was probably based on a very solid hunch, or worse, it might have been a vibe.
Maybe its the club rather than Battle. He's been played in a number of positions but just doesn't seem to fit our mix ATM.

Highly possible that another club would then ask the question. Then it becomes a matter of are we better off keeping Battle or do we think we can get a another player who better fits our needs for whatever we get in a trade.

Looks like we are looking for another youngish ruck/forward - so if we could get any of CCJ, Chol, McLean or Max Lynch then you'd have to think about trading Battle because at least he will have trade currency.

Well, thats a clear message to the recruiters- get a ruckman who can go forward. Might need to make a space for 2 small forwards though. Higgins and Butler or maybe Gresham.

I'm sure we will be floating this years and next years 1st RDP, they may want to grab the opportunity whilst it contains at least 1 top 10 pick. If they wait another year they may only get two teen picks and more delays on finding and developing talent.

We just signed Max for more cash than Ben is currently on so I don't think that will be holding him to gold coast.

Right now I'd say both (Ross and Dunstan) are in the 3rd round range - whatever free agency band that equates to.

That is a straight up equation, based on little other than cash and where that ranks them.

If we were to re-sign, miss finals and finally pull the trigger, being contracted, a year older and potentially in poor form/injured (granted one of those if/hope-type scenario), our hand goes from taking a 3rd now, to taking whatever we can because they are no longer required.

Out of interest, of Ross, Dunstan and Billings, using only the current list, who is the hardest to cover?

The Herald Sun article suggests GC's offer for him to stay will hit the million dollar mark.

We wouldn't be able to offer that type of money.
