He was also in that collision outside Ballarat and thought the playing and leadership at the bulldogs was as toxic an environment as can be. I’ll defend the bloke cos I worked with a relative of his and got some really good intel.
You mean the collision going to training , where he sustained minor injuries and was kept in over night for observation , not sure what getting a paper cut has to do with anything

I think I wrote the other day that a lot of Saints hights from the past 5 years have been popping up on my youtube feed.

I was amazed and surprised how much Billings figured from year to year, especially in vital moments.

Remember the Carlisle/Murphy match? That game Billings kicked 5 and got over 30 possessions and I could hardly remember him. He is so vanilla in his playing style.

He wont be Bont, but that is not his fault. It wasn't the best choice but considering they chose McCartin over Petracca it looks like genius in retrospect

Top 10 in his Draft
Tom Boyd
Josh Kelly
Jack Billings
Marcus Bontempelli
Kade Kolodjashnij
Matthew Scharenberg
James Aish
Luke McDonald
Christian Salem
Nathan Freeman

So we couldn't get Kelly and the only one arguably better than him in the top 10 is Bont.

The draft had Cripps, and Merrett at 13 and 26 so arguably from the first round only Crips and Bont have worked out better.

Still prefer either (although Carlton have run Cripps into the ground) but the Billings pick isn't as bad as people make out. Certainly not a bust by any means and fully fit makes the team better.
Yep, people will see what they want to see. He was everywhere that day. Great forward IQ. I’d still rather him play there as a point of difference. I understand the vanilla commentary when he’s on a wing, chip chip chip

Didn't they win the flag around that time? Maybe we need some macho toxicity down Linton. St
Yeah , Im sure players that are not regulars or not getting a game can easily crack it and start talking smack , i heard it first hand out of one of our young players mothers mouth at a game one day ,
PS the player is still with us

I still believe that H&C can be something beyond , he certainly has something that sets him apart......He is someone I would dearly love to take on the kind of work ethic STEELE has.......just a tad more muV8scle and elite level fitness ....he could surprise us, hell, surprise himself even!!!............ and...... just maybe, even his MUM ...but then again its damn hard to surprise them...they always believe..Thank God for MUMS hey!!!!!!

Yeah Hunter Clark is also the one for me that I felt had the potential to be A-grade. Injuries probably robbed him this season, but fingers crossed for a big 2022

Damn this club has form retaining players that hold on to the AFL lifeline like cling wrap. So i guess this means Geary, Ross and Billings are auto inclusions next year if fit while form won't factor into them being picked. Never going to win a flag this way.

Melbourne had the good sense to get Jones his 300 then boot him out the team into a sub role, probably as respect for his long service. Can't find a single other player for them being given games for being a good bloke.

And thats the biggest frustration with the club, gifting players games that arent going to get us a flag.

We showed we have some pretty talented kids that can play and we should put more time in them, Connelly/Byrnes/Sharman/Bytel and if we dont play them they will look for other options later on.

I would love to see our pick #9 (and if we pick them up, Owens and Windhagen) in the starting 22. Give them a taste of what the big time, build the hunger and send a warning to the players they need to work harder to keep a spot in the team.

I do think our midfield improves with a year at the Saints under Crouch's belt. I think he struggled to understand his role earlier in the season. Jones has shown he is very handy. Hopefully Gresh gets a good run at it. I don't think there's any excuses now for a less than competitive midfield week in, week out.

Jones resilience is his downfall and Gresham is nearly 2 years out with injury. They are both good but so is Hanners. Crouch was pretty good this year and seems to have levelled out a bit. At Adelaide he was very high possession at times but could have very quiet games.

To me there are a few question marks over or midfield still.

Clarkson also has a lot of other mates at the Saints now. If he doesn’t leave Victoria (which is very possible) then we would have to be a serious option for him.

Also Moorabbin is close to his home and he could make a historical impact at a foundation club with a good young list.
We've had co-captains, why not co-coaches Clarko?

Agree with you there. Like to see a bit more Byrnes and Bytel in there and hopefully we can pick up a decent mid with pick 9, him too.

In the words of the Castle....'Tell him (you) your dreamin".....but having said that it'd be a pretty wild idea!!! So cool but unfortunately would put RATTS in a pretty awful position!

jeez, how many mates does Clarkson have? He has a shedful at the saints, bound to have a million at the Hawks and that is not counting North melbourne and other places he has been.

Anyone else think JB should rotate through the middle, cant remember him even having a crack through?
I can't see it happening this far into his career, but it is a bit of a pity he never went through there more. He had a month in 2020 where he spent some time in there (25%, 33%, 19% & 37 CBAs in those games). Other than that he's pretty much never been to a centre bounce. In that month, I thought it did bring back a bit of creativity with his kicking. The different angles of a midfield role allowed him to open up a bit more and cut across the ground with his kicking. He gets in such a bad habit of just going down the line to safe options from a wing. His numbers were solid in that month, though it didn't increase his clearance/contested numbers really. Seb's return coincided with Billings going back to a wing/half forward role and he had a pretty quiet last six weeks to the season.

Yeah, one of the things we're missing in the midfield is explosive line breaking speed. Jones has it, but isn't overly durable and can be inconsistent. Byrnes has got some zip and is developing nicely. Hope he gets some more bursts thru there. Having Gresh back will be awesome as well tho

I doubt they’d be starting 22 for a while when we have quite a few youngsters like Connolly, Bytel, Byrnes and Sharman ( Allison?) still very inexperienced but showing that they need and deserve game time. They will get games beforehand new players we bring in.

The good thing is that I only have to hear the name hanners for one more year, then the nightmare is over. thank god for that.
Well may you laugh, but what if HANNERS plays 15 to 20 games next year, no sign of any real injury...is professional, cool and General like. Why wouldn't you give him a one year contract the next year at a human level wage, should he be interested in going around again? I think he'll be 31 in Feb of 2022 so 32 in 2023...well within the realm of possibility! Luke HODGE was 35 wasn't he?

Yeah I'd keep him on if all signs are positive, just can't see his body holding up though.

People don't realize we never had Ryder , Marshall , Jones , Hunter Clark for just about half a season add Gresham to that and you can see why our midfield had a up and down season.
Even when Marshall played he basically messed up his preseason due to injury and even when he played was on restricted time for the first couple games before going out again with a injury and Jones was in the same boat with his preseason but when he did over come injury he showed he has improved vastly as a midfielder as shown by his stats here.

Season Highlights
● 28 disps (12 kicks 16 hballs), 3 marks and 4 tackles in Rd 23 58-pt win over Fremantle at Blundstone Arena (22 Aug 2021)
● 30 disps (13 kicks 17 hballs), 5 marks, 8 tackles and a goal in Rd 20 31-pt loss to Carlton at Marvel Stadium (30 Jul 2021)
● 32 disps (19 kicks 13 hballs) and 5 marks in Rd 19 8-pt loss to West Coast at Optus Stadium (24 Jul 2021)
● 31 disps (24 kicks 7 hballs), 4 marks and 7 tackles in Rd 8 9-pt win over Gold Coast at Metricon Stadium (8 May 2021)
● 37 disps (18 kicks 19 hballs), 8 marks, 6 tackles and 2 goals in Rd 7 69-pt win over Hawthorn at Marvel Stadium (1 May 2021)
● 26 disps (15 kicks 11 hballs) and 4 marks in Rd 4 20-pt win over West Coast at Marvel Stadium (10 Apr 2021)
That's basically half the games he played and coming back from injury.

Getting Marshall , Jones to play more than a half a season we will be a far more dangerous side then add on Gresham who only played 3 and Hunter Clark who played 13 games.

Also people talking about Ratten , well all I can say he is a breath of fresh air to who we have had for years and after 2 years taking us to finals in his first and then been ravaged by injury to at one stage only having 4 fit players to slot into the team if needed and that was Alabakis , Allison , Lonie and Clavarino (suppose that is how Sharman and Connolly got a look in)
and only be out of the 8 by a game is really amazing.
Also not having to listen to some arrogant wan/ers in pressers is also a bonus like many of these big name coaches are.

Anyone who thinks we will not play finals next year are not clearly looking how good our squad is , just having a better injury plagued season we are in the 8 , we click with just a improvement of development from the young guys we are top 4.

Ratten like any coach cops flak when the team disappointing and they did with many of our big named players not being seen in some games.
Membery went missing in many games and the same can be said about Billings , Butler , Hill and form of Coffield and Battle dropped considerably , even King had a period where he wasn't getting the pill and I talk about other players like Ross , Long and Kent but they will be lucky to play next year unless for injuries.

Anyway we have just about a squad which has been about 20+ odd changes and after this season with at least another 6 or 7 additions we have a squad that is as strong as it's been for many years - just de- listing Dunstan shows we are willing to release a AFL grade player so we don't clog the list and are now only willing to pay a player what he is worth the reason Ross and Billings have been looking around.

Looking forward to next year and our new recruits.

Well he has a season to come good , but we we brought him in we had no real stars and guys like Billings and Ross were the names brought forward we people mentioned what players we had so Hannerbery broken down was a stab in the dark to bring class into the side but now we have genuine stars in our line up.
Like Steele who has developed to be elite , King who only still is just a kid is going to be a crowd puller and even a guy like Higgins who showed this year that a half forward can get 20 plus touches a game and bring excitement we have not had since our little 44 was running around.
Add to that Marshall who had a season to forget will quickly be labeled one of the best ruckmen in the AFL like he was when given the role a few years ago and like many say he might not be the tap ruck around but if he gets to were he was a couple years ago before Ryder took the number one spot , his clearance work in the middle just about makes up for it and let's not forget having a guy who is a top 10 in contested marking as a ruckman is a bonus most teams don't have.

I can bring up Sharman , Highmore , Connolly and a few other guys we have but I don't want to get to optimistic on these kids until they had a a full season under there belt.

We now have a team of young guys that are going to entertain us for years to come and boy it's been a while.
