Toast 150 Years of Essendon

I’m old enough to have been to plenty of games at Windy Hill. That nick name you deny was called out by members of the crowd.
Not by many, and not a lot of times. But it 100% was.
eg “Go you blood stained n………..”.
I wonder if Tippa will be celebrating their 150 years.

This is some of what I reading or origins.
It was formed by a band of followers who had rich land, horse racing and agricultural interests. All founders were associated with the Royal Agricultural Society, the Victoria and Moonee Valley Clubs, the Melbourne Hunt Club and Victorian Woodbrokers.
The Club was formed at a meeting in Kent Street, Ascot Vale at home of Mr Robert McCracken.

... The Senior club was formed in 1873 and was known as "The Same Old" for many years although junior Essendon clubs were in existence in 1871.

Yes ..Maplestone has the McCracken family property now as …

“Mercy College in Mount Alexandra Rd , Ascot Vale..opposite the Tram depot.”

He included an old photo view from Flemington Bridge.

There’s also an Ailsa st in Ascot Vale named after it.

Are Essendon's origins Presbyterian?
The founding family probably were according to this I reading on Wiki....
"McCracken was fiercely Presbyterian and did not want his property North Park to fall into the hands of a Catholic institution on his death. He was so adamant about this that he put a codicil in his will. On his death the property was sold to Harvey Paterson, an executive of BHP, who later sold to the Catholic St. Columban Mission.": The McCracken Family,Strathmore Community History.

The 150 years of Essendon failings are the topic of this thread. If you can’t stay on topic on the main board, go hide in the Essendon echo chamber board and deny Bomber Thomson is a drug peddling criminal.

Back to 150 years of rubbish please
150 years of failings, yet the most flags. We should bring out a “creed”

FWIW the East Melbourne Cricket Ground where Essendon used to play was located where the townhouses are now, with the goals running north/south parallel to Jolimont Rd.

Corner Jolimont Road & Wellington Parade South - Barak Bridge in the distance down Jolimont Rd, MCG away to the left, Wellington Parade Sth leading to Flinders St and the city.

Hosted 225 VFL matches including three finals.

You have it 100% correct. Jolimont Road was the eastern boundary.

150 years ought to capture your full legacy, the systemic injection program is a key part of that.

stop your crying

In 10 of those 150 years they will have had a convicted drug cheat on their list.

Imagine Essendon wiping the whole of the 1940’s or the 1980’s from their history. A decade is a long time to ignore.

Neil Kearney and Dave Barham. Will be airing on Fox Footy/Kayo.

Looks great can't wait to watch this.

As a lover of footy and the history of our sport I appreciate this kind of stuff even when its about a rival club.

Would love to see similar docs on WA and SA footy but that's for another thread.

One match ? Turn it up.

You know there many exhibition games were played by VFA vs VFL teams? Dozens of them.

Same as WAFL and SANF clubs playing VFL teams.

Albert Thurgood didn’t play for the other local Essendon club did he?

Essendon Town FC was a junior club ffs

You’re embarrassing yourself

"Junior" club didn't refer to kids playing though like it does now. Hawthorn were a junior club or had a junior club but that just meant they weren't the primary or "senior" club.

Theres good and bad no doubt. One of the most successful clubs having won 14 grand finals cannot be taken away.

However - Drug cheating will always be not just a stain, but part of their identity. Peptides are unfortunately part of the fabric of the club.

Even moreso with McGrath the pick no.1 poisoned fruits of their peptides scandal still on their list.

History nerd stuff.
This is one of the Grandstands at the EMCG. Essendon FC shared it with East Melbourne Cricket Club.
1632007847453.jpeg EMCG is demolished after 1921. The East Melbourne Cricket Club move to Glenferrie Oval and merge with Hawthorn to form Hawthorn-East Melbourne Cricket Club.
But they loved their grandstand so much they moved it & rebuilt behind the goals at Glenferrie Oval.
There it is right behind the goals at Glenferrie.

So Hawthorn used a grandstand for 40 years that once had Essendon fans in it!

No one gives a s**t. We didn't win anything from it anyway so it means nothing in the long run. Definitely the darkest period in our history (and it will always be a part of our history), but at least we've rebuilt from it and put together a good core of young players with a good coach leading the way. It's firmly behind us now.

The club has mostly recovered but it won't be behind you whilst poisoned fruits mcgrath is on the list.

Excellent. Wonder if any of those old taller terrace houses on Jolimont street are still there. Assume so. Might look for one in that photo.
