Inside Midfielders
Ben Cunnington (30) - God when available. Most underrated player of the last 5 - 10 years.
Hugh Greenwood (30) - Tackles. Slow. Should be playing VFL.
Jed Anderson (28) - Hardest working player both ways on the list. Can accumulate disposals and provide tremendous tackle pressure. Only thing that lets him down is his skills.
Jy Simpkin (24) - Seems to have lost the class to his game. Wins the ball but throws it on his boot. Can accumulate but his kicking is poor.
Tom Powell (20) - Has exceptional composure and the ability to find the right option via handball or kick. Physically not ready for a full time midfield role but looms as an eerily perfect Cunnington replacement long term.

Balanced Midfielders
Tarryn Thomas (22) - Can't question his ability or his willingness to put his head over the ball. Beginning to question his ability to accumulate and consistently impact games. What's his best position?
Luke Davies-Uniacke (22) - Is strong, has really good skills, has pace/is explosive. Can't put together a 4 quarter effort. Offers nothing when not played on ball.
Will Phillips (20) - Hard running accumulator with neat skills. Sounds good right? Needs a decent run at it.
Charlie Lazzaro (20) - Drafted as a mid who racked up the ball, won't displace other midfielders. Works hard but seems to lack an outstanding attribute. Future in doubt.
Jason Horne-Francis (18) - Is close to our best player already. Shows the ability to both win the ball and use it at an elite level.

Wings
Jared Polec (29) - Cooked
Flynn Perez (20) - Physical, works hard, quick. Could be good by foot. Persist.

Ruck
Todd Goldstein (33) - Clearly still our best ruckman.
Tristan Xerri (23) - Too good for VFL, not quite good enough for AFL. Lacks an outstanding attribute for an AFL ruckman - not a great mark, not an exceptional aerobic athlete, not physical enough. Future questionable.
Callum Coleman-Jones (22) - Looks interesting athletically. Unsure as to whether he has potential to be a number 1 ruck or is more a forward/ruck.
Jacob Edwards (19) - So smooth for a man his height. Lots of potential. Great athlete. Needs time.

Key Forwards
Nick Larkey (23) - Being asked to do way too much too soon. Works really hard. Umps doing him 0 favours. Better suited to the number 2 key forward role.
Charlie Comben (20) - Aggressive marking forward with good athleticism. Very injury prone.

General Forwards
Jack Ziebell (31) - Looks better playing up the ground as a forward more than a deep role. Can take a grab and uses his body exceptionally well. Bit of a victim of a lack of supply as are most of our forwards at the moment. Too slow. Should play VFL most of next season.
Cam Zurhaar (24) - Being asked to be a key forward. Is extremely damaging when in form. Better in a better side. A real barometer.
Jaidyn Stephenson (23) - Can be influential at his best, can play through the wing and has looked good as part of the centre bounce crew. When things aren't going his way he checks out. His defensive work is abhorrent but this gets covered up in a good side. Cream not the cake.
Curtis Taylor (22) - Being played on a wing currently which is a role he's struggling to excel at consistently. Showed great signs as a forward where his overhead marking and smarts provided a real x-factor.
Jack Mahony (20) - He works hard and has shown at times some footy smarts but lacks a standout attribute and can't kick over a jam tin. Future is questionable.
Pheonix Spicer (20) - Drafted as a wingman, trying to turn him into a small forward. Questionable footskills. Very raw. Has pace. Future questionable.
Eddie Ford (19) - X-Factor. Can take a grab. Could be a real weapon at half forward if he develops a really good tank.
Paul Curtis (19) - Smart, quick, strong. Looks a long term lock as a forward.

Key Defenders
Josh Walker (29) - Competes hard and is playing a role greater than his ability. Good depth.
Aidan Corr (28) - More suitable to the 3rd tall role. Was a fixture in a decent side when fit as shown at GWS. Is prone to making poor decisions with and without the ball. Would perform better in a better side.
Ben McKay (24) - Our best key defensive option. Developing an intercept marking game.
Kallan Dawson (23) - Athletic gifted, average kick.

General Defenders
Aaron Hall (31) -Defensively poor but offensively crucial off halfback. Most attacking halfback. Nearing the end.
Luke McDonald (27) - Inconsistent. Been playing further up the ground which isn't his strong suit. Kicking is inconsistent. Can't question his commitment.
Kayne Tuner (26) - Good lockdown defender. Poor footskills.
Lachie Young (23) - Prone to the occasional howler by foot. Has shown potential as an intercept marker. A victim of being apart of a defence constantly under siege rather than being eased in. Has potential.
Aiden Bonar (23) - Injury prone. Extremely athletic but has failed to show it as an offensive weapon. Has shown a willingness to compete. Average footskills. Future is questionable.
Kyron Hayden (22) - Drafted as an explosive inside midfielder so we've put him in a back pocket. Compete's hard. Footskills average at best. Future questionable.
Bailey Scott (21) - Has been thrown around early in his career, but seems to show promise as a half back. Has great running capacity but has questionable footskills. Future is questionable.
Atu Bosenavulagi (21) - Has closing speed and has shown signs he could intercept. A victim of being apart of a defence constantly under siege rather than being eased in. Does lack a standout attribute. Future is questionable.
Matt McGuiness (21) - Not key positional capable at AFL level. Shows potential as an accumulator, intercept marker, and decent kick at VFL though.
Miller Bergman (19) - Shown potential at VFL level as an attacking skillful defender. Needs to develop physically.
Pat Walker (19) - Good kick. Struggles to accumulate. Delist.
Jackson Archer (19) - Tries hard. No standout skills. Delist.
Josh Goater (18) - Athletically impressive. Struggling after missing so much footy due to COVID.

Hard to argue with much of that. But I don't know why 23 year old Young has potential when 21 year old Scott has a questionable future?

Makes for poor reading seeing those key forward and key defender stocks. Also highlights that our midfield isn't quite there yet. Simpkin, Greenwood and Anderson are limited footballers. LDU & JHF are sure things but there is still a long way to go for Phillips, Powell, TT ect. I still think we are lacking another young physical two way runner in the midfield, someone who can support JHF with his physicality. I'm hoping Phillips fills the void, but still a lot to play out there.

So many known quantities who just aren't good enough but will continue to get games because we have no maturity and limited experience on the list (Turner, Bonar, Walker, Ziebell).

It's a shame we completely bombed so many picks in 20's, 30's and 40's in the 2014/15/16/17 drafts,. It has left us with a real void of mid twenties players who would now be in their prime. Even nailing 1-2 of those picks would've made a considerable difference to how we are faring now.

Fingers crossed we can nail this upcoming draft and get some more talent in the door.

How do we delist Jackson Archer?
He wad taken in the 2021 draft and is on a 2 year contract lol

A key point in all that is how little we will lose from retirement and ageing in the next 5 years. Goldstein is the only big loss from the current team on the park. Over that time we can add a heap of development and replace the ones that don’t work out with 3-4 top 10 picks, probably 10 top-25s and hopefully a high-end free agent or two. The potential is absolutely there if we can nail it.

It is amusing that Dawson is labelled as an average kick but people don't stick that label on McKay, I wouldn't want my life to be dependant on Benny hitting a target 40m away and he turns over some regulation kicks. His strengths just outweigh the deficiencies so it isn't that big a deal, you just want them to be able to reliably hit a target within 30m and do it relatively quickly so a rebounding defender can more aggressively rebound.

The speed of our movement out of the back half is a real problem, we give time for the opposition to set up zones and presses and we too often crab the ball sideways or backwards with an easy kick that puts the pressure vice on us and means those who eventually come out of defence have to just lob a kick in hope up the line or have a high difficulty kick to try and go into or closer to the corridor.

There isn't a good side that is slow to transition the ball out of the back half. Some good sides don't have great midfields, some don't have great forward lines, but no good sides has a s**t back 6.

I’d say the write up of Bailey Scott is harsh I do think his skills are improving.

Of all the bottom teams none have such a lack of quality in the 25 year old and overs. This is why we won’t win games. How many would get a game at a top 8 club?

I think a good club could carry one or two of them, a club like ours can't collectively carry that ensamble of underperformers. We only have 2 quality consistent older players, Goldy who we are trying to push out and Cunners who has missed a lot of footy.

Agree. Cunners for sure but he’s not playing. Goldy for teams that need a ruck and maybe LMac or Corr That’s a massive indictment of our recruiting and development from 5+ years ago it just shows itself now.

That, and the sheer dearth of key position players, are the two reasons its hard to judge Noble objectively this season I reckon.

Reckon we’ve been too hard on our senior players expecting them to help us out of this - we know their limitations… every single one of them.

This was the year for LDU, TT, Jy, Stephenson and Larkey to really blow up- I dare say they have really gone hiding since the expectations crept up.

Agree. McKay mitigates that well by only taking safe kicks and getting the ball to those who can kick well. One thing I did like about that Dawson video was that he clearly had pace and used it a lot offensively, often just to give off a handball. A lot of our players have pace but don't use it to create anything eg. Bonar.

I agree re the senior players, the quality isn’t there it’s the recruiting development from 5+ years ago it takes along time to fix. Hard for younger players to blow up when they have no senior support.

Yeah, I think most players can hit those 30m kicks but for whatever reason we lack the confidence with our kicking, you don't need to be an elite kick to hit those targets, your form and confidence have to be not shot to pieces though. It is like a pro golfer who can't sink a short putt, once you convince yourself you can't hit it then you wont hit it.

We know McDonald can kick, won the B&F rebounding out of half-back and his ball use was very good but his confidence is shot as well so he is making a lot of costly mistakes down back. We've hit a malise which is hard to reverse in the middle of a season. But we have a lot of first round picks who atm are playing like rookies, it is a costly blow for us when even the experienced players are playing mediocre footy and not taking pressure off of the younger players.

I think Bonar had some great games early down back, but he isn't a guy that holds up under duress, he has speed, but he isn't aggressive, he also lacks peripheral vision, he is often caught with the ball with a lack of awareness he is under pressure. Maybe with more development, form and some confidence he will be a good player, but he seems to be injury prone as well, I do not have high expectations that he is going to make it.

We need to address not just how long it takes to develop players, but what is causing good quality kids to plateau at a very low standard or those that hit a high standard to regress so quickly, we can't afford to take 6, 7, 8 years to get someone to a decent standard.

I just remind myself of Scotty T when he first came along, awkward kicking and running action.
but by the end of his career, he was one of the most reliable by hand and foot. skills are something that can certainly be worked on.

I’d say the write up of Bailey Scott is harsh I do think his skills are improving.
Bailey, like Curtis Taylor has failed to put on size since he joined the club.

As a result he is weak in one on one contests and gets brushed aside like a fly.

This wasnt so much of an issue in junior footy, because Bailey was better/faster than a lot of the players he competed against.

But it really stands out in the AFL.

Not sure if he will put on size as he gets older.

I agree he needs to put on size, that’s not to say that he should be considered “future uncertain”, just an identifiable area to improve

Reckon we’ve been too hard on our senior players expecting them to help us out of this - we know their limitations… every single one of them.

This was the year for LDU, TT, Jy, Stephenson and Larkey to really blow up- I dare say they have really gone hiding since the expectations crept up.
It's not their fault they are still all on the list absolutely. That decision belongs to others - some if not many who are now no longer at the club.

McDonald too often takes a low percentage kick that would be low percentage for the best kick in the league. I'll give him credit, he rarely just takes the kick to make it someone else's problem or the easy 20m sideways that achieves nothing more than squeezing the backline even more.
