Analysis Stadium deals - what, how, when - why we need a new one and the SA footy paradigm shift happening

Former South Australian Premier Rob Kerin has been appointed chair of the Stadium Management Authority in the latest change to Adelaide Oval’s leadership.

He succeeds former South Australian Governor Kevin Scarce, whose four-year term as chair concluded this month.

Scarce remains an Adelaide Oval director.

Kerin is highly regarded within the broader agriculture and political circles for his ability to listen too and involve all parties in finding structures and solutions to many problems.

I'd suggest it's not the personnel being the problem, rather the business structure of the SMA.

Rob's a great bloke but the SMA needs an assassin, not a mediator.

There is no incentive to change the structure. The 4 SACA directors first duty is to protect the SACA's revenue stream derived from the SMA. The 4 SANFL directors first duty is to protect the SANFL's revenue stream derived from the SMA.

Port and the crows are only represented via the Adelaide Oval Financial Model - Core Funding Principles agreement.

Facebook reminded me of this photo I posted 9 years ago when AO was being re-developed.

Your photo reminded me that, The MCG redevelopment of the Shane Warne Stand will probably include a hotel. Story from early May.

........
The business case shows how accommodation joined directly to the famous precinct would boost the visitor economy in Victoria, with improved links across to the Olympic Park precinct and Richmond station.

The hotel would have sweeping views of Yarra Park towards Punt Road Oval and Richmond.
Better links would boost the safety of fans visiting the packed stadium during major events, while a top-end hotel would lure conferences and events anchored around the sporting mecca and is modelled on the success of a new Adelaide Oval Hotel.

The Oval Hotel, which opened in 2020, includes luxury rooms and restaurants overviewing Adelaide Oval.
.........

From part of the article I quoted from UK Hilton Hotels CEO. This was from 2018 and my post in July 2020 about hotels at sports venues becoming the norm, was on the eve of a Test cricket in England recommencing, against the West Indies at The Rose Bowl in Southampton and the players and media were using the hotel as part of the covid bubble.

“It’s inconceivable to me that major sporting venues don’t push ever harder for non-matchday income and other uses of very valuable property,” said Smart, Hilton’s Vice President of development in north and west Europe. “I think in 10 to 15 years’ time it will be unusual to find a football club in the top two divisions [in England] that won’t have a hotel attached to it and it will be the norm, rather than today when it is still more of an exception.

The SMA are applying to change the liquor licence to allow beer cans back at Adelaide Oval.

Complete insanity. Zero need for it and I'd imagine everyone who went to the footy when they were allowed would remember an incident or two of a beer can flying over their head or landing near them in a close call.

There must be a way to make more cash from it, much easier to manage, no kegs etc… perhaps less staff too.

Money is the only thing driving it.

They'll spin it as removing plastic but you're right, it'll be 100% financially driven.

SMA COO on ABC Adelaide right now explaining why they are doing it. Has been approved by the govt. regulator and beer (but not soft drink ) can sales will start at SANFL finals series.

Says that it has nothing to do with their financial position and has been through an extensive public consultation process over 4 weeks.

Really?

Funny then that the SAPOL Police Union has today come out saying they have not been consulted and are not supportive.

IMHO the SMA has zero credibility and does things with one goal only - preserve their bottom line.

Oh and maybe back to the days when kids scavenged for cans and hassling you to hurry up and finish your drink. You soon learnt not to put a can down that you haven't finished - it's gone.

They probably whined to SAPOL and/or licensing authorities about the loutish behaviour that sales of packaged beer would bring back in the GDV days.

It wouldn't surprise me if the SMA ended up making it a requirement that you can't take cans back to your seat. You have to drink them in designated drinking areas. And the SMA have generously provided speciality bins to collect everyone's empty before heading back to their seats.

It means that seating areas become defacto dry areas, which will make families happy, and the SMA also get to collect all the empties for the recycling deposit to also help with their financial bottom lines.

The prospect of watching Port sober will further contribute to the executive legroom days of 2011.

140 anniversary match 2010 pissing down mums says my brother who is driving us in can take her place.

Go to West Lakes at ht , bring in mini bottles of whiskey in with us plus coke bottles, absolutely pissed by the 4th and can only remember that white dreadlocks guy having his only good afl game while laughing my ass off with 2 rows free for us

Ah ammi stadium how I don't miss you 😆

Bloody nanny state reactions in the media to this.

Oh you are gonna allow cans and everyone is going to throw them and injure and kill people.

As Pick from Paltown used to say, another case of the majority (responsible people) spoiling it for the minority whingers. As he also used to say give me 3 good men and 5 dogs and we can solve the problem. First can thrower you shoot to maim. Second one shoot to kill. Bet that solves any problems.

The return of the Footy Park painted line? **** what a massive life regression that'd be for footy gooers in SA. I like the idea of cans coz the ****faces never move their legs enough whilst you're carrying multiple beers trying not to spill it, problem solved with cans.

Do they still sell cans at the SANFL? I can actually not remember once a can launched.. like someone throws an empty one and you cop some beer on you? Well I've copped plenty of half empty cups thrown during celebrations or whatever reason, I'd rather take an empty can to the head then get absolutely drenched in beer.

GDV?

Also note that it is the Police Officers Union and not the Police Department who have objected to selling beer in cans in the general public areas (they have been available in corporate sections of the oval and at times in the 'village green' for many years). SAPOL have OK'd the plan which is why the licence change was approved.

My biggest concern is that the long term deal the SMA has with Lion Nathan for the supply of crap beer at exorbitant prices will continue to 2029 - whether it comes in a can or a plastic cup or doesn't change that at all.

Here is the ABC segment from this morning:
