The process will likely derail the Lyon appointment not aid it.

There are many boxes Lyon wouldn't tick, like being new age, sensitive and ineffective. We don't want him to tick those boxes.

The point of a detailed process is to sort through unknowns.

Someone mentioned it elsewhere. You don't need a 'process' to recruit Lyon. You ask him to come in for a chat and ask him about the list and then why you think you need him. You ask him about how he thinks the game has changed and how his tactics and strategy have evolved. You might have to ask about what Bell meant when he said they were taking back control of the footy dep.

2 different lists, 2 top finishes, 3 gfs and a rebuild Freo is benefiting from. You don't insult him or anyone with his record by asking him to apply for a job.
So the standard Essendon coach interview then.

If you want to look at it that way, yes.

Head hunting Lyon is a very different thing to head hunting Rutten, assuming we legitimately thought he was best man for the job - and there is quite a bit to suggest that was not the motivation to sign him.
I'd be happy enough with Ross for 2 or 3 years because I think his appointment would leave no room for the players to continue to avoid the defensive work - it's something weve needed to address for a very long time. If he had them going by year 3 then we stay the course.

back when we did things properly.

or didn't, i have no idea on our history pre'90.
i just use the flags to mock other teams...except carlton...
I think there was a time where what we do now was the way it was done by everyone (local club mentality and decisions making). The problem is the whole industry went and turned pro and the only thing we kept up with was marketing.

My concern with Ross Lyon is he has a history/reputation of sacrificing the development of younger players to focus on his senior core of players to drive for success. There were stories at St Kilda and Fremantle that if you weren't in the top 25 players on the list, Lyon basically ignored them.

We have a super young list and we need someone that will commit to the draft, blooding younger players and focusing on development. If Lyon is happy to commit to that, fine, but I dont think he would.

To be fair, that was also Rutten’s biggest weakness. I think it’s most coaches.

If we go through the proper process, we should give our next coach a 5 year deal and let him know we want to focus on the draft/kids and don’t expect meaningful movement up the ladder until year 3 or 4.

1-2 actually but still. There's a clear cut top 6 this year and Brissy will get the job done.
It’s 1-4 if you include 2019, which makes more sense as that is when their finals run started.

0-2 in 2019, 1-1 in 2020 and 0-1 last year.

Yes obviously they do have a bloody strong home record. But the finals failures are undoubtedly a big blot which they’d want to remedy in a hurry.

“100 per cent - he’s a top liner, he’s a star,” King said on SEN Breakfast.

“Everyone says he hasn’t won a flag, how many Grand Finals do you need to go to to endorse your CV?

“He’s challenged players to get the best out of themselves, he sets really hard standards that he then hands onto the leadership group to maintain.

“He basically allows the leaders to lead and then puts this game plan, sure, it’s defensive, it always has been, but when St Kilda had the capabilities to be a high scoring team, if you look at those teams of 2008, 2009, 2010, they were scoring heavily right throughout those seasons.

“I think one of those years they were averaging 100 points right up until the last fortnight of the home and away season. He can score, if he wants to set the game up to score, he will do that.

“I don’t understand the negativity around Ross, and I think Essendon needs Ross right now more than any other person.”

well this will be a massive issue.

Yep, we had better get an on field leader then.

The negativity stems from his treatment of women.

Most of the negativity about Lyon isn't based around this, which IMO it's the only legitimate concern.

People are complaining his game style is too defensive, whilst also complaining how shit Essendon have been at defending has a certain irony to it.

What Lyon brings is exactly what our playing group has been failing at doing. If any coach could make our team of front-running flankers play hard-working defensively strong football, it's Ross Lyon. If anyone is going to convince Parish to become close to the best two-way midfielder in the game (which, IMO, he has scope to be alongside Touk Miller and Andrew Brayshaw) it would be Ross Lyon.

I'd be interested how our midfield would be setup under Ross when he's pretty much only got offensive players to work with; Draper, Shiel, Parish, Merrett, Perkins, Stringer are all offensively biased players, offence comes naturally to these guys so it would be a huge transformation for them to play Ross Lyon football.

In an ideal world we appoint Lyon as coach for 3 years, with Yze or Giansiracusa to follow. Ross can set the standards and foundations the same way he did at Fremantle, Yze or Giansiracusa take that and build it in to a Premiership side.
