Yeah, poor article. We tried everything we could to keep him. Valued him highly and he probably would have been part of the leadership group if his commitment was there. But obviously he wanted to head back to Adelaide and the rest is history.

A more apt article would be "how Adelaide managed to lowball Sydney and steal a great player with leadership capabilities"

Sub-heading... and how the whole afl mediascape underrated him in the 2022 off-season

2023 articles... how Sydney let one slip

Smh
We were shafted so badly on Dawson that I still rub my ring when I think about it.

Dawson had just had a breakout season, coming after we'd put years of hard work into him. He'd§ §§§§ § § § § § § § § § § § § § § § § § § § § § § § already shown himself to be a polished performer, capable of holding down and excelling in a number of challenging positions. And that left foot, that raking left foot!! I bet Nicks left that call still hard and raced out to buy a new captain's chair

If compensation reflects the value of a player, where was our compensation? What's a new captain even worth? Two first rounders? Three?, How about four? All of the top 10 draft picks? What did we get for Dawson? We got.....nothing, zip. sweet FA, zilch, nada, jack sh*t, cr*p, diddly squat, b*gger all, zippo, dick. We got beans.

OK, we got a handful of loose change, some pocket fluff, a ball of paper that had been through the wash twice and most of a half eaten Mars bar. Our recruitment team flipped, traded and charmed. turning that rubbish into a discarded ruckman, one serviceable enough, but prone to getting lost in the red mist. By the time our fixers got to work on him his potential was probably on a level with De Koning anyway. He certainly took the chocolates over De Koning in the recent practice match.

If only Adelaide had paid top $ for Dawson and offered him a long contract, but they didn't need to. Dawson was already choosing curtains. Adelaide knew it. We knew it. Even Port knew it and made a half hearted bid. We had no bargaining power. The AFL chose to interpret that as Dawson was worth nothing. Of course they knew he was worth much more. We knew his worth, everyone knew his worth. Nicks knew his worth and made him captain after just one year. The other teams were happy to see us shafted (again).

Did we let him slip? No, the system stinks. It's stacked against us. Do I sometimes wish we were Carlton? Hell, no.

Cal Twomey the only one who has us missing the 8. No surprise there.

Franklin milestones

Swans talk from On the Couch - will we or won't we make Finals

Expectation of Buddy this year...which is pretty much what we said last year tbh

Barrett is bullish about the swans and has been right more than wrong.
I remember when the consensus from the other head wobblers was the swans were a 13th/14th team. 2021.
He went 6th.

Yes, I've been a Barrettist since that time. HE made the call because the Swans usually make the eight and it was unusual we'd missed two years running.
Plus Barrett is Chad's biggest fan, has tipped him for a Brownlow possibly this year. I strongly approve of any pundit who speaks favourably about us.

I saw Josh Jenkins also tipped us to miss the finals but couldn't be bothered saving the link. Or reading the story TBH.

He has no interest (contacts maybe) with the swans.

His twitter is pretty much zero swans content.
That's correct he as zero insider contacts with us and we don't play ball come draft time either to give him any insider hints.

But aside from that last year he was doubtful we'd make finals right up until it couldn't be denied. I'm not sure he watches any of our games and therefore has zero clue.

Twomey's problem is he is so laser-focused on the draft side of footy that I think everything he sees afterwards is seen through the prism of when they were draftees. He still talks about straight-up busts in glowing terms like he did when they were coming through the draft six or seven years earlier, as though because he rated them then, he's still optimistic about them now.

This explains both his fondness for the sides who so often pick his favourites, and his disinterest in sides like us, who regularly pick draftees Twomey isn't bullish on. He's obviously not going to be as enamoured with a list full of players that he himself didn't see much in.

It's kinda narrow-sighted and a little unprofessional, but at least I understand it. Barrett is just a trainwreck who talks nothing but dribble.

Barrett is an interesting one.

He evidently rates the Swans, but IF you read his IF/THEN column, THEN you’d swear he doesn’t know anyone other than Buddy (and perhaps now The Chad).

Precisely.

He doesn't rate the Swans at all. We just have a few individuals he loves watching and talking about, and he's the embodiment of the stupid, AFL journalist belief that individuals he likes watching and talking about equal on-field success.

If you asked him what he thought of Florent & Fox's additions to the back-line, or Ladhams' chances of improving our ruck situation this year, or Rowbottom's run to the grand final last year, or Stephens' chances of holding his place in the team again this year, or how good it was to see Hayward live up to his potential last year, he'd raise his hand and politely stop you, before asking, "Who?"

**** him

Edit: Just to prove I'm not making it up, since last year of the 24 Sliding Doors articles he's written featuring a Swans player, 50% of them have been about Buddy or Warner. Number of times our B&F winner, All Australian and best two-way mid in the comp Mills was featured: Zero. Like I said, **** him.

Damo.... 'when it's all said and done', he's 'franked' his reputation

He's literally never gotten an open first round pick of ours right. For a so called expert that must drive him up the wall. Every other team he gets it right more often than not. We give him absolutely nothing to the point of it being a running joke between Cal and Kinnear on Trade Radio

It is a running joke, but it also goes to show how much the top 10 is comprised come draft night.

I wouldn't call it compromised, I just think Cal has 1000 inside sources. Clubs can do whatever they want on the night, nothings stopping them from attempting a trade up or down

That's my point. They shouldn't be giving him a damned thing.

Ah yeah in that sense yeah clubs are way too lax. It isn't NBA draft bad (****ing Woj) but yeah that phantom he drops a day or two before the draft is always filled to the brim with accurate information about what 17 clubs want to do

Current Sydney Swans pay homage to former players in effort to connect with their AFL history

Nice touch from the present day Swans.
Hand written letters and phone calls from present day players to former Swans stalwarts.
Coaches and staff also involved in the program.

Past players seem chuffed by the initiative, prompted by the move into the new HQ/Training + facility.
Which of course is a far cry from that experienced by the Swans 'pioneers'.

No surprise that it was thought up by Brett Kirk.
In his multifaceted role, Kirk has made sure the present day players, coaches and staff appreciate the humble beginnings the club came from and the sacrifices people like Browning made to keep the club alive and promote the growth of footy north of the Murray River.

“After the 40 year celebration last year it’s good for the club to reflect on the past and to recognise those who have been part of that is fantastic,” Mark Browning says.

Absolutely , do you know every past player and official gets about 3 or 4 updates and stories a year , discounts on membership and functions , it's fantastic . Driven by Andrew McMaster , what a club

Lost all respect for Barret during the Daniher move to Sydney trade.. Bar-Rat lost his cool on trade tv and continually accused Harley of lying, and was saying demanding things like "its the Swans responsibility to get this deal done". The Swans were offering Waaaaay overs in that trade, which was Papley, our 2nd round pick (Gould) and our future 1st (Logan)..
Still have little respect despite him backing the Swans more than other media 'experts'

I like Twomey, but as posters above have mentioned, he has little no interest in us. Beatson gives him nothing but an entertaining 10min interview each year and despite being best mates with all Vic draftees, he has little no knowledge of our Academy kids (or any northern academy kids)
During the 2020 draft period he was asked to compare the lists of the Swans and Freo. He said 'the Freo young players are better, and, the Freo leaders are better.' haha - kinda got that wrong!!

So.. in the end..
Harley remains as one of the most respected people in the AFL landscape, while Bar-rat remains as the AFL media pawn
and.. Beatson will continue to simply humour Twomey (luv ya work Kinnear)
