We were shafted so badly on Dawson that I still rub my ring when I think about it.Yeah, poor article. We tried everything we could to keep him. Valued him highly and he probably would have been part of the leadership group if his commitment was there. But obviously he wanted to head back to Adelaide and the rest is history.
A more apt article would be "how Adelaide managed to lowball Sydney and steal a great player with leadership capabilities"
Sub-heading... and how the whole afl mediascape underrated him in the 2022 off-season
2023 articles... how Sydney let one slip
Smh
Dawson had just had a breakout season, coming after we'd put years of hard work into him. He'd§ §§§§ § § § § § § § § § § § § § § § § § § § § § § § already shown himself to be a polished performer, capable of holding down and excelling in a number of challenging positions. And that left foot, that raking left foot!! I bet Nicks left that call still hard and raced out to buy a new captain's chair
If compensation reflects the value of a player, where was our compensation? What's a new captain even worth? Two first rounders? Three?, How about four? All of the top 10 draft picks? What did we get for Dawson? We got.....nothing, zip. sweet FA, zilch, nada, jack sh*t, cr*p, diddly squat, b*gger all, zippo, dick. We got beans.
OK, we got a handful of loose change, some pocket fluff, a ball of paper that had been through the wash twice and most of a half eaten Mars bar. Our recruitment team flipped, traded and charmed. turning that rubbish into a discarded ruckman, one serviceable enough, but prone to getting lost in the red mist. By the time our fixers got to work on him his potential was probably on a level with De Koning anyway. He certainly took the chocolates over De Koning in the recent practice match.
If only Adelaide had paid top $ for Dawson and offered him a long contract, but they didn't need to. Dawson was already choosing curtains. Adelaide knew it. We knew it. Even Port knew it and made a half hearted bid. We had no bargaining power. The AFL chose to interpret that as Dawson was worth nothing. Of course they knew he was worth much more. We knew his worth, everyone knew his worth. Nicks knew his worth and made him captain after just one year. The other teams were happy to see us shafted (again).
Did we let him slip? No, the system stinks. It's stacked against us. Do I sometimes wish we were Carlton? Hell, no.
