Autopsy Two on the trot Swans 77 def Carlton 51

My 6yo is starting to learn what it means to be a Carlton supporter. After I happily told her than the Swans beat the Blues last night, the first thing she said was "Aww, why does Carlton always lose?"
Tell her there's still time to turn away from the Dark Side of the force.

"Goals are bad. Mckay."
Gee it is difficult to watch a player going through what he is going through, I hope he gets it back soon.

No matter what he's going to be out of his depth. He has the skill set to be a 3rd defender, who intercepts. He's always going to be pushing s**t uphill playing on the number 1 options
Agree. Seeing Blakey today and Aliir Aliir after he went to Port shows me it is much much easier to play loose than tight in defence.

My question on Francis is not whether he can play the intercepting role but what else does he bring? He will never run like Blakey and may never dispose as well as Paddy. I think he therefore needs to make sure that he gets the basics perfect and becomes a rock solid cog in a machine that has players that can kick and run at an elite level.

Based on today’s performance, I think Francis can get there but there is a bit to work on. He was horribly out of position a few times last night.

I guess the other string to his bow is the ability to swing forward and take a mark (he is a bit like a reverse Reid). To play this role, Francis needs to get his goal kicking more accurate.

The good news is that it is all upside form here if he puts the effort in.

If anyone doesnt watch our primetime games while listening to SEN's coverage they are missing out.

Listening to Gerard Healy become a BigFooty poster cheering and trashing our players while he also couldn't give a flying * about the other team on the ground is a joy.
I’ve learnt about fan cams and now this in the one week. Can the world get any more amazing?

Hickey was fantastic in the 1st half but you could tell he was cooked in the 2nd half dropping easy marks and fumbling the ball. McAndrew needs to build his tank as well, his TOG is way too low.

Mids played for tap to advantage and not their man - big change from previous weeks. We need the rucks to be match fit and we’ll completely turn post bye around.

One player I would take from Carlton that is realistically obtainable would be Cottrell.

I thought he was terrific for them the type of player that cracks in hard at every contest.

The real reason why Blakey didn't get BOG

What a load of shite, if you have always found it difficult brother, don’t put your hand up to do it.

Not much between Warner and Lizars, I think impact on game you lean toward lizard.

Rugari has always been a poor AFL journalist, this just makes it confirmed.

blakey has also learned to play through his mistakes
there was a moment late, he had possession wide on a back flank, found campbell (i think), then charged up for the return handball and actually got himself into strife, slipping out on the boundary line, but as the ball went loose among several players blakey was scrambling around on the ground at full stretch trying to scrap and knock the ball to a teammate
not sure if it was after that play or another one where he had to head to the bench coz he'd run himself out of breath but both were great signs of how much his whole mindset has developed, let alone his skills and judgment
and with his springs and long reach he can mark higher than most players in the league

Yep great point. He has come on a lot in that aspect of the game as well. He is a risk/reward player - he will make errors. But when he makes the follow up efforts to try and address the mistake, it is great to see.

I thought Hickey was extremely useful for the structure as well. He evened up the ruck contests and allowed McLean to focus on his role without having to be a second ruck. He did show some signs of rustiness and is very slow, but he contributed well. McAndrew kinda worked into the game in the second half, but is still nowhere near the level we need him to be, so it was comforting to have an experienced specialist ruck there to take the pressure off. I'm surprised there are some people retiring Hickey after that. He was solid.

As was Buddy. Still essential to our forward structure whether he kicks goals or not.

I thought Hickey looked like he was starting to find a little touch and match fitness last night. There were a few times where he seem to pop up at an opportune time and also seem to appear in defence and attack to lend a hand. A couple of clumsy moments and a poor kick or two to cap the night off. But given his delayed start to the year, injury history and age, I thought he was OK.

McAndrew struggled although there was one moment where he gave off a sublime tap from centre bounce to Papley. He's clearly not ready but credit to him in that the effort is very clear. I'm optimistic he will continue to develop into a good player.
The tap to Papley really was incredible, big Stretch just needs to continue to apply himself, get games into him and listen to big Cox!! There is a lot to like early days for a ruck too.

Hickey is still a fair way off. He has smarts though, unsure whether he needs to get match fit or his body has packed up on him. He does provide a better contest than Ladhams, greater consistency, easier for our mids to read.
