Mid-Season Draft

5 goals for Hunter today. Really putting his hand up to get selected.
Probably the best local pick now, but as a key forward probably not our greatest need, certainly wouldn’t be upset if he got through to us but he won’t.

He played his junior footy as a KPD, even being forced to ruck where he performed OK. So he could be a genuine swingman and depth at either end. The question mark would be whether his athleticism (one of his biggest strengths as a junior) has been hampered by the ACL injury which he is just coming back from.

I'm not sure we will be taking a selection now it will be the 9th or 10th down the line.

Don't get your hopes up that we bring in a new rookie, of the list of nominations there's probably four or five we would rate as worth a go and we won't have a pick in that range.

I think we’ll save the salary cap to pay Schultz and Treacy.

About 12 are rated to go, I reckon we sneak one in

It's a base rookie contract, outside of the cap

Yea even if we pay more than base rookie contract only the difference between the players salary and base rookie contract is paid inside the salary cap.

We’d have to pick someone who’s already been in the system for that to happen imo.

Think there’s still a chance we pick no one but given we’re likely to have significant space on the rookie list at the end of the season (Banfield, Treacy upgraded) list spots shouldn’t be an issue unless we’re looking to downgrade more than two players from the Senior List.

According to SEN and Fox Sports:
Brisbane, Carlton, Collingwood, Gold Coast, Melbourne and St Kilda don’t have list space for a selection.

We will likely end up with pick 8 which is much earlier than last years pick and that is assuming a number of the clubs in front of us actually move players to inactive long term injury list. Richmond also have to get approval for retired player so could end up selection 7. Geelong are reportedly interested in Naismith who fit their age-profile. Hawks very keen on Ethan Stanley. West Coast Maric.

Round 1
  1. West Coast
  2. North
  3. Hawks
  4. Richmond
  5. GWS
  6. Sydney
  7. Geelong
  8. Fremantle
  9. Essendon
  10. Adelaide
  11. Western Bulldogs
  12. Port Adelaide

Surely Richmond get that approval though. Castagna retired before the season started.

I'd say gc won't pick, they are tight on lost spots and have a tonne of picks in the next draft

Carlton would make room you'd think, when is the deadline, tomorrow?

Robert Hansen Jnr

Subiaco (WAFL)

H: 180cm, W: 70kg, DOB: 13/3/2004
Nominated Contract Term: 18 months

A wingman or small forward, Hansen Jr is lightning quick, agile, has a dynamic left foot and does things on the field that others can’t. An indigenous player from the Goldfields League 600 km North-East of Perth, he played a full season of under 18s last year but has progressed to play senior football with Subiaco in the WAFL this season. From his first five senior games, Hansen Jnr averaged 10.6 disposals, 4.4 score involvements and kicked three goals. He received approval to play for Western Australia as an overage player in the under-18 national championships this year but now looks set to be selected in the mid-season draft.

Jack Buller

Claremont (WAFL)

H: 199cm, W: 99kg, DOB: 16/5/2001
Nominated Contract Term: 6 months

A key defender and ruckman in his under-18 year in 2019, Buller has developed into a powerful key forward. He models his game on Port Adelaide’s Charlie Dixon and has worked hard on his fitness over the past 12 months to allow him to get to more contests. Buller is a fierce competitor and a physical presence in attack who can take plenty of contested marks. He has played four senior games for Claremont in the WAFL this year, including a breakout 22 disposal, 14 marks and 4 goal game against South Fremantle in Round 2. He had eight disposals, 11 hitouts and kicked a goal for Western Australia in a match against South Australia earlier this month.

Jaiden Hunter

Perth (WAFL)

H: 196cm, W: 93kg, DOB: 20/4/2002
Nominated Contract Term: 6 months

A goalkicking forward, Hunter was overlooked in his draft year in 2020 before having a horrid run with injury. An elbow injury prematurely ended his 2021 season and he went on to rupture his ACL during a practice match at the start of last year, wiping out his entire 2022 campaign. Hunter returned to the field for Perth’s reserves side in Round 1 this year and booted four goals, before earning a senior WAFL opportunity a month later. He kicked four goals in his first senior game of the year against West Coast, catching the eye of AFL recruiters. Hunter is a competitor, has good aerial ability and reads the play well. The apprentice electrician previously played as a defender and ruckman during 2020 and 2021, showing his versatility.

Paywalled, but confirmation from the boss that we want to take someone if they are available.

Apparently the Tigers are keen on Hansen Jr and will of course be picking before us on Wednesday night. We know they love West Australians. 😐

'Fremantle footy boss Peter Bell confirmed to The West Australian his club “would like to take a player” on Wednesday for the “long-term future”, but could pass if the players they like are already off the board.'

The Dockers will be hoping Hansen Jnr slips to their selection (Pick 8). Otherwise they’ve been linked to fellow WA prospects Buller and Clarke.

Think they're more likely to take hunter tbh

Robert Hansen Jr
Has huge potential as a project and perfect to take over from Sonny hopefully hitting straps as Sonny retires.
My bet is he will be in Purple Wednesday night.

Risk is him being off the board given where we now pick. I'd like to think he'd be pretty good for our list, unless we convince Tyler Brockman to come our way.

Seems like smoke and mirrors. Tigers desperately need a key forward to help out Jack with Lynch being out for an extended period. They are set for small forward types - Rioli, Bolton, Pickett, Martin. Reiwoldt has been playing injured also. Reckon their real target is Buller or Hunter.

I think they'll take Hunter too but their smalls aren't as topped up as they used to be, Pickett and Martin aint it, they've lost Castagna, Butler, Aarts and Dan Rioli moved to defense over the past 5 years

Only have Maurice Jnr and Judson Clarke now, Mansell is getting a game but don't rate him and Bolton is mid/fwd
