But I don’t have a better solution, which I guess was your original point.
Yes my main point is it’s very hard to sustain the dual objectives of free agency and equalisation. It’s a compromise.

Would you preserve the compensation being tied to finishing position of the losing club?
Just get rid of compensation.
I dont see why clubs like Geelong should get penalised for another team being a) crap and b) the other team rorting the system.
If we had no compensation, the McKay deal may well been Essendon give North their first pick and Essendon get McKay - fair deal, and probably would have happened. Kangas dont get 'rewarded' for losing a player and Geelong doesn't get shifted back (will have real implications for the Rat deal) for something it was not involved in.
But say Ess and North dont get a deal done, well either Essendon have to pay overs to nab their man, and North get salary cap to use on another player, or McKay goes to the defat, either way, North still have extra $$$ to poach someone else.
Compensation rewards poor management, stuffs up the draft and IMHO actually hampers trade and player movement

With such a stack of quality defenders we sure did look b-grade in 2023. Interesting that you see Oliver Henry as a defender.

That was obviously an oversight.

We haven't lost any personnel from our 2022 premiership defence (SDK, J.Henry, Kolo, Stewart, Bews, Tuohy) so why is it so dire all of a sudden?

It's not dire, it looked ordinary at times this year, but we had injuries and no continuity at all down back. Kolo is a whipping boy, J Henry has an injured foot, that's enough for most to claim the sky is falling.

I'll go as far as to say I guarantee our back 6 will be better next year.

Healthy Jack Henry, SDK with something to prove again, Stewy at his dominant best, and Bews re-gaining some touch with a full pre-season.

Hopefully with some midfield improvement, they won't be getting an avalanche of entries too.

We can't base our opinions solely on 2023. Everything went wrong. That's not an excuse, as the hubris shown by players over the off-season played a huge part....but it's not going to be like that in 2024.

Would be interested to hear your views when we are down the bottom of the ladder for a period.

How is it possible that Cooney is still a talking head in the AFL landscape?
He's an inoffensive harmless idiot, and his role on Trade Radio is to come up with ridiculous mega trades than then do exactly what they have here... get people talking and reacting to it, and it fills a content slot for Hutchy

This was not a serious scenario. It was a joke for a bit of a laugh and a troll. So, sucked in.

All their mega trade scenarios are designed to get people talking - some of them aren't bad suggestions and you can see the starting point for potential trades, others are just way out there that you question what they were thinking

Would you preserve the compensation being tied to finishing position of the losing club?
This is the biggest gripe I have with compo.

Pick 3 for Ben McKay (or James Frawley, for that matter) is the most ridiculous rort, and a big punishment for Hawthorn, who should have had a crack at p3 but now can’t.

FFS Pay Tomma.

If ever Nike had the right idea...

JUST DO IT.

GO Catters
Very sad to imagine THawkins in any other jumper than the Cats one.
With Kelly, Chappy and SJ it was a little irksome, but this would be as bad as seeing GAJ going to GC.
Clearly he thinks he has at least one good year to offer, unlike his buddy Jack Riewoldt.
I'd be a lot happier seeing Tom retire than playing elsewhere, but that's just selfish me.
He may want one more flag, and realises it's not to be at Geelong?

Yeah I don't mind him tbh.

Doesn't pretend to know any more than he does, doesn't brand himself as some oracle predicting what's going to happen (Hi Kingy).

Just an ex-footballer spitballing ideas. He's not hurting anybody, and doesn't act like his opinions are superior just because he played the game at the highest level.
