What can we cook up if we dangle pick 7 and 23 in front of a few clubs?

Roll them up together and eye off a heist - split the picks - just sit tight and do nothing? Personally I think it's just a waiting game. Geelong don't need to blink - just wait for other clubs to knock on the door - otherwise take the picks to the draft and bring in some young talent.

Let's all keep in mind that we have list spots to fill so the notion that we'll sit on our hands and do nothing might not be far off. I don't think Mackie and Co will be too phased just taking picks (or split picks) into the room on draft night. Not as sexy as pulling of a heist but still an ok outcome after last year I think (Henry / Bowes / Bruhn / Clark).
There could be some clubs that really love Darcy Wilson (especially after dominating the combine alongside ZZ).

Our #7 is probably the prime pick to safely land him for clubs that just gotta get him.

I actually really want him now. Would be more than happy to just keep that pick and draft him, now that we're likely to have a decent pick for Sav.

Can kick on both feet - tick
Has speed to burn - tick
Can play multiple roles - tick
Blitzed the combine - tick

Nothing to not like here, and pretty much guaranteed to be available at our pick. If he goes before then, it's likely Sanders or O'Sullivan drops to us - so it's a win-win.

All these bolters actually really help pad out the top end of the draft.

Prior to the combine, based on their form over the prior 2 years, we have this idea that only the top 7 are elite. Then these kids who have something to prove turn it up in the combine. Suddenly it's a top 12 that are elite, and teams like ours are able to land a player with a good grounding/base.

Someone just asked Trade Radio if we'd get compensation if Hawkins left, they said they "doubt it". For those interested, and not that he would leave, we would get a 2nd round pick as compensation if Hawk's contract at another club was $500k-$700k. If his salary was $700k-$900k it would be end of 1st round. And if it was $900k+ it would be the pick after our first (so pick 8 as it currently stands).

Doesnt it say that it becomes one in the 30s after all the adjustments?

Yes & No - any movement due to Academy picks or F&S picks doesn't really change the value of the original pick though; those players would never have really been available to us anyway, meaning they may be on a wish list but not the reality list

So if it's say 24 after FA compensation, it'll still be the 24th live pick in the draft, even if it ends up as pick 30 on the night - better than what was on offer last year when it was like pick 33 as the offer

Yeah, I like him. What are the knocks on him? He doesn't seem to be in that clear-cut top 8-ish group. His game would translate really well to AFL.

North just officially given #3 for McKay.

Never in doubt really... although it still sucks.

Now we can start talking about our #8 as #7 is no more.
North already had alot of talent on their books in 2023, and after a decent start, I remember posters saying - this is a team with no gameplan. This was before Clarko took his break. I honestly felt like Clarko going to North was like Malthouse going to Carlton. And when the wheels started falling off, Clarko let Ratten take over and take the losses in his name, to preserve his own legendary status. He may just be biding time to take on a Director of Coaching role in Tasmania.

I wonder if these draft picks will make a true difference to North, or they will just do what GC do every year. Either way, high draft picks means higher percentage of salary cap spent on few numbers of players. So alot of other clubs will be circling to take talented players off North in future.

Got it, thanks for that explanation. So it's sort of meaningless to consider the Academy and F&S players as within the draft? The position of your pick never changes in regards to the available pool of players.

What is a better system that doesn’t harm the equalisation objective?

Port Adelaide have pick 23 on the table for Ratugolea. Will end up actually being around pick 26. It will probably happen. Geelong's backline was terrible last year and will be worse in 2024 without Ratugolea. SDK may come good, may not. Kolodjashnij is not the answer and Jack Henry has ongoing injury concerns. Bews is also on the decline. Everyone is worried about our midfield but the backline will be our weakest link.

Would hope that North are getting something else pretty good back, because this suggest by Jon is North giving up a future pick that will be a top 10 pick & maybe even a top 5 pick, just so they can have pick 11 this season

🤦‍♀️

Respectfully disagree. We have a stack of depth in our backline with 14 players in our squad to fill the six backline roles. Another tall would be nice but we have options with Blicavs able to go back.

I'd remove the tiers and have a scale the converts to DVI.

You can then have a reduction factor based off finishing position that penalises top teams harshly and poor and mid tier teams less so.
That sounds great. It’s nothing like getting rid of compo that some are calling for.

The FA compensation formula is not right. It is a function of the player's age and their $$ offer. The age factor only makes up about 10% of the equation, which means the draft compensation is easily manipulated by clubs simply offering big $$ to avoid having to trade.

Most would argue fair compensation for McKay would be somewhere in the second round. If North chose not to accept this then Essendon could trade for him. Instead, Essendon just offered huge money ($850k/season) to get North a better compensation pick.

The formula needs to be adjusted to give less weight to the contract $$, and factor in other things like games played, average games per season, accolades (B&F, AA, premiership, Brownlow, etc). It sounds complicated but it doesn't need to be.

As expected. Hopefully gets done today so I don't have to pay attention to trade period until next week, haha.

Ratugolea's manager, Scott Lucas doesn't think the trade will be done anytime soon...

But Lucas said the clubs were working towards a deal, with it likely to take most of the trade period to confirm the deal.

“He’s enjoyed his time at Geelong thoroughly, requested a trade at Port Adelaide, now it’s up just to the clubs to work out what both parties think is fair and reasonable,” he said.

“It is my expectation, and a strong feeling that Esava will get to Port Adelaide...

...With Geelong wanting a pick between #15 and #20 for Ratugolea, it is expected the Cats will ask for later pick swaps to even out the sides of the deal, but with Ratugolea out of contract, Geelong will likely take a deal for the big man.

Scott said the teams were still confirming what is fair and reasonable for each side.

“With trade going through until next Wednesday, most clubs will wait until Monday or Tuesday to get the ball rolling, and they’ll park a lot of it.

Was literally just about to post this - beat me to it, haha.

Son of a...can't believe they're dragging it out. Reckon I might just take a little break and return next week when it's done. Not much else happening it seems!

Not sure his tactic of using Jenkins to air the laundry is palatable......

How much do you trust the word of Jenkins, and then how much do you trust the word of Jenkins while he is on AFL trade radio.

SOS on AFL trade radio sounded like a lunatic... then right after the trade period St Kilda made him their list manager
