Trade news for another team - but can anyone explain this one?

So Port want to continue developing Duursma as a wing, but sounds like he wants more midfield time, mentioned in the article is to play "on ball" more which Port said is unlikely to happen with their current midfield setup. He was told he's welcome to explore his options and he lands on Essendon - how exactly he is going to get more midfield/on ball time at Essendon, and especially with others they're looking at bringing in?

Port has JHF, Butters, Rozee, and Drew as their set young on-ball brigade for the next 7-8 years. Essendon are less established. They have Tsatas, Hobbs, Caldwell, McGrath and Setterfield, but that mix is a long, long way from being set in stone.

Isn't Essendon also favourite to land Gresham who'll be part of the midfield/forward rotation - so another player he'll be behind

I'd imagine he'd be played at half-forward with some mid rotation, yeah.

I also forgot Perkins, who plays the same role. Very poor career choice, and reeks of someone who just wants to get away from Uncle Kenny, haha.

And will most likely end up playing on the wing...

It's amazing how often a player changes team under the guise of wanting to play a new role which is on offer at it new team, but ultimately they play a very similar role to what they did at their current team

Yep... Just like us and Bowes... You are what you are... Duursma aint an inside mid.

It's all just words to me... Port needs to lose someone to get all these players they want in and they see Duursma as the most expendable asset they have.

The Port fans on their board think Duursma has been pushed out. Kane always follows the Port party line so I don’t think he’s an impartial source when it comes to player movement at the club.

I remember when Wingard was pushed out, Port sources including Kane talked about him being unprofessional (there was even a story that he used to take his Xbox on interstate trips and lock himself in his hotel room to game) as a way of appeasing fans. While Wingard was never the same player at Hawthorn, by all accounts he’s been a terrific role model and there has never been a hint of unprofessionalism. So much so that they offered him a new deal while he’s rehabbing his Achilles.

So Essendon approaches him and says we'll put you a on wing for 100k more per year and lock you in for more years

At that pay scale we'll be getting a compensation pick for a 35 year old
That would make him the highest paid player in that age bracket surely - so would equate to band 1 or something 😜

Cornes os Ports media representative. He borders on being a minister of propaganda. None of this was said before them releasing his wants out...which coincides with Port requiring to gather collateral to get deals done. Basically they see the reinforcement of their backline stocks more important than what Duursma offers the side.

Hawkins told Jenkins to say it in the media so it is not that simple.
Yes, and that's exactly the level on which we should be discussing it here and in trade media. Not worrying or writing articles about the fact that Hawk might leave.

He's achieved what the station wanted - say something you could have said in ten words across three minutes and get a headline. Mission accomplished. JJ is trying the KC storyline to get himself a cushy radio job.

Ten words: He wants two years, Geelong have offered one. Will sign.
Nailed it. 👏🏻

Bowes should be in our mid rotation, imho.

Round 24 v Bulldogs - 14 centre bounce attendances, 25 disposals, 4 clearances, 6 tackles.

In a year where we lacked 2nd and third round picks this has played out about as well as could hope.
When you think about it, delaying the trade a year, for pretty much the same pick, denied Port a genuine chance a flag (he would have improved them for sure). So that's good I guess.

Hawkins ain't leaving, and the two parties are just dancing a little tango at present.

Young family - fully immersed in local farm life - part of the furniture at the club - will want to be a one club player like his father. He'll take the one year extension and they'll meet halfway and have triggers in the contract that automatically give him a second year (or not). And for anyone saying he could stay in Geelong and travel to Melbourne to play for another club..........won't happen.

Old mate Joel won't sit back and watch his best mate leave either.

Not sure why people fall into these stupid media pieces so easily.

100000% correct imo.

"Later pick swaps" being our pick 85 for their 39?

I'd imagine it'll be the crappy picks at the end of the draft being moved around, so that when they come in, we're in the late 40's rather than early 50's. Either that or Futures being involved.

What can we cook up if we dangle pick 7 and 23 in front of a few clubs?

Roll them up together and eye off a heist - split the picks - just sit tight and do nothing? Personally I think it's just a waiting game. Geelong don't need to blink - just wait for other clubs to knock on the door - otherwise take the picks to the draft and bring in some young talent.

Let's all keep in mind that we have list spots to fill so the notion that we'll sit on our hands and do nothing might not be far off. I don't think Mackie and Co will be too phased just taking picks (or split picks) into the room on draft night. Not as sexy as pulling of a heist but still an ok outcome after last year I think (Henry / Bowes / Bruhn / Clark).

They didn't offer us a pick in the 20s last year though did they?
