How much do you trust the word of Jenkins, and then how much do you trust the word of Jenkins while he is on AFL trade radio.

SOS on AFL trade radio sounded like a lunatic... then right after the trade period St Kilda made him their list manager

He claimed Hawkins gave him permission....... I'd hope Hawkins would call him out if that is incorrect.

The FA compensation formula is not right. It is a function of the player's age and their $$ offer. The age factor only makes up about 10% of the equation, which means the draft compensation is easily manipulated by clubs simply offering big $$ to avoid having to trade.

Most would argue fair compensation for McKay would be somewhere in the second round. If North chose not to accept this then Essendon could trade for him. Instead, Essendon just offered huge money ($850k/season) to get North a better compensation pick.

The formula needs to be adjusted to give less weight to the contract $$, and factor in other things like games played, average games per season, accolades (B&F, AA, premiership, Brownlow, etc). It sounds complicated but it doesn't need to be.
Would you preserve the compensation being tied to finishing position of the losing club?

Would hope that North are getting something else pretty good back, because this suggest by Jon is North giving up a future pick that will be a top 10 pick & maybe even a top 5 pick, just so they can have pick 11 this season

🤦‍♀️

They really should have tanked that match and then they wouldnt be in this position. They would have gotten picks 1, 2, 11 (maybe) and 20.

I don't think so. If Ben McKay was leaving Collingwood they'd be getting pick 19. The discrepancy between pick 19 and the pick 3 that Kangaroos are getting for him is far too wide to be 'equalisation'.

Am I reading that right? Dees get Hawkins and pick 8 for pick 14 and 27? These muppets actually get paid for this dribble?

Hawkins is an UFA, so they don't need to pay for him & he technically doesn't need to be in this trade deal - but seems Cooney has included him as he wants to use the apparent compo pick of 41 as part of the trade

Then I can’t see it happening. The AFL has a high priority on equalisation. If you squeeze it here it will just result in more help elsewhere (like priority picks and assistance packages).

Does someone at Footywire know somethings the rest of us don't or do they just not like Jack Billings - I'm pretty sure he's still contracted at the Saints, but he's been removed from their player list on Footywire:

The player contract list:

And that his 3 games this year don't actually count as having played for St Kilda and he's now a past player:

As per other sources, including the St Kilda website - he's contracted for another 2 years...

I think this creates issues in the short-term.

McKay is a much more attractive free agent at North than at another club. The club knows North will not match because of their finishing position. Very long-term it may pay off for North but it is deepening the trough, losing a guy like McKay. Good for North if you are patient, but not good for competitiveness of league next year.

It also creates weird inequities at top end, Richmond were just lucky that Gold Coast were bottom when Lynch became available. We were not so lucky with GWS and Cameron, and it cost us a lot of draft capital.

I don’t think that is right. And yes, I am still bitter about it.

But I don’t have a better solution, which I guess was your original point.

The thing for me is the bands are producing some wild results so get rid of the bands.

The calculation for which band you fall in involves putting the player contract on a spectrum. The draft order is also a spectrum. Do some spectrum mapping from one to the other and select the pick based on a continuous range.
