Has there ever been as much attention on a fringe player as Jack Ginnivan? Wasn’t best 22 at the Pies this season, certainly wouldn’t be next year with Schultz’s arrival, and won’t be a b22 player for the Hawks when they rise up the ladder IMO.

Very quiet trade period in terms of big name moves.

It's happened before. Usually to make a statement, or they don't rate the player/draft picks included in the deal.

Yeah, I can appreciate if you sit there thinking Esava is worth more than what you're being offered, but if Port Adelaide are blankly sitting there at 7:25pm saying "We've made it pretty clear this is the best you're going to get" surely you let it go through, particularly for an OOC player.

4th rounders these days are utterly useless. The draft is all over after pick 55 max.

I hear Brendan Ryan is going for a pick in the 40s which will become high 30s on draft night.

Pick 30 for a player offered the biggest deal of the trade period isn’t a great result. Overall makes little difference but it isn’t a great result when you see the absolute trash being traded for picks basically straight after it. Soldo haul for a 28yr old absolute hack speaks volumes about where clubs see this draft.

About as much as we could have expected for a player of his talent being out of contract. Let's face it - losing him won't be the end of the world and the pick/s we get for him are unlikely to change the history of our club either.

With Soldo going to Port to be the no1 ruck, we should try to get Sweet to be a backup for Stanley. Annoy their plans somewhat?
It is a weird situation, and I'd be annoyed if I were Sweet. Probably agreed to a trade thinking he'd be the no.1 Ruck, then go and get Soldo.

Unfortunately, I think it just means we're more likely to end up with either Lycett or Hayes as a DFA. Although it did seem like Mackie was happy to not bring anyone in, so maybe we'll just roll with what we've got.

Don’t blame us for pushing to get the best deal possible, and respect asking for Lord who I think would be a good get.

And I appreciate that Port are paying Sav a big deal and that should somewhat dictate the price.

But at the same time, P25, even once it becomes P30, isn’t too bad. Sav isn’t best 22, and while he’s solid depth, I’m happy taking a second rounder and seeing those games elsewhere if we don’t have a full strength backline in 2024

Maybe nobody was a tad harsh, but I'm more talking about how quickly things can change for young players, and in this case in particular, small forwards.

The outrage seems a bit much, considering you seem to conveniently be leaving out the part where I said 'He's a much better footballer than Ginnivan', who was just best 23 in a premiership side.

That statement would have him aptly rated to the figures you mention. A good player, but not a superstar by any means.

He was the talk of the town in 2018 & '19, the next big thing in footy. Fast forward to now, and he hardly warrants a mention, despite those figures you mention.

Admittedly, part of that is a product of playing for a club like Richmond, and then a club like St Kilda. The difference in media coverage between the clubs is stark.

However, the point still stands that these players are flash in the pan types, and I'd expect similar from Ginnivan over the coming years.

He'll go from being the most talked about player in the league through 2022, to just some bloke who gets a game for Hawthorn every now and then in a couple years.
I don’t remember jack Higgins ever being talked up as the next big thing in footy

I have heard that Geelong are asking for a player - not Lord. Not sure who though

Only player I could think of looking at their list was Jackson Mead. Other players are either too talented, or completely obscure.

Mead was decent in his draft year and is a big bodied mid - but that's all I can come up with.

Then you were living under a rock in 2018.
Josh Kelly was the next big thing
Sam Walsh was the next big thing
Bont was the next big thing
JHF was the next big thing
Chad Warner was the next big thing
JUH was the next big thing
Jessie Hogan was the next big thing

Jack Higgins was a fun story but he was never in any AFL universe ever thought of as the next big thing
