Review 2023 National Draft Review Thread II [McKercher, Z.Duursma, Goad, W.Dawson, Hardeman, Maley]

I’m not falling for this sh*t. Pick 2 and 3 is the bounty of the draft.

Sliding up 2 to 1 is not worth sliding 3 to 7 IMO. 7 means we miss Mckercher, Duursma, Watson, Curtin.

I suspect it would.be using 15, 17 and 18 (and/or futures) to try and get another top ten pick and using that.

WC have been linked to Geelong's pick. They've been talking about trading for it. How will they get that?

I think that before the draft we will trade 2, 15 & 18 for pick 1.

WC will go to draft night with 2, 15, 18, 23, 37. When Geelong give up on Sanders making it to them WC will make their move up.

Well done. A bit of work has been put into this. I can’t see GWS being happy to slide back so far. Did u come up with any other options?
Cheers. Yeah I agree that GWS would be the toughest sell for this deal; however, their pick 7 is important to make it worthwhile for us. Geelong’s pick 8 could fulfil the same role, although it limits our options since we won’t get our preferred choice of Caddy and O’Sullivan.

I cannot see any other club with a top 10 pick even contemplating the possibility of trading down. If two x late first rounders don’t get the job done for GWS then the only other obvious possibilities would be for us to dip into our future picks (which I’d disagree with) or somehow convince West Coast to also part with their #23 as a sweetener for GWS (which I can’t see them doing either).

Pretty good effort that. I think WC would potentially have to pay up a bit more to either Melb or GWS in terms of their second pick or a F2
Yeah that’s a good solution and an additional pick in that range would definitely make GWS more willing to give up pick 7. Hopefully West Coast would come to the party there to make it happen, but they’re no certainty to.

I can't see why the Cats or GWS will want to give up their picks 7-8 absolutely no chance with out our picks next year and then still highly unlikely in my opinion.

Cats are the type of side who would back their assessments and prefer 2-3 later picks over pick 8.

They'll draft like Philactides, Edwards and Schoenmaker or whatever and they'll all be good players.

A quicker reset for a club that is looking to build a younger list.

Hope you are right but not over confident myself.

GWS’s pick 7 will be in the range for Caddy and O’Sullivan when academy selections are taken into consideration. They’ve already taken 3 talls within the top 20 over the past 2 drafts (including Cadman at 1). GWS also have pick 16, which falls in between our 3 x late first rounders. Therefore, they might be willing to part with 7 for two of our picks so they can take three selections in a row at 15, 16, 17. Clearly, they may not be interested in doing that, but it’s worth asking the question, because we have a much greater need for KPP like Caddy and O’Sullivan than they do.

I said the same thing a few days ago. The cats are the masters at the late picks. Speed is a priority for the cats.

Trading both 2 and 3 to move up to 1 for a kid who has a chance of still being on the board at 2 anyway, would be one of the most negligent things the club has done trade wise in over a decade.

A draft haul of the below is definitely appealing
2 - McKercher
3 - Duursma
15 - Murphy (may not be available)
17 - Collard / Jiath / Reid / Edwards / Green etc
18 - Collard / Jiath / Reid / Edwards / Green etc

But to set ourselves up for success and better address needs particularly in the backline, I hope we give consideration to splitting picks 3 for 6 and 11 and trading 15 and 17 for 8.

Leaving 2, 6, 8, 11 and 18
2 - McKercher or Duursma (I’d prefer McKercher)
6 - Curtin, Sullivan or Caddy (I’d go Caddy here)
8 - Curtin or Sullivan (whichever is left on the board)
11 - Leake, Windsor or Murphy
18 - Collard / Jiath / Reid / Edwards / Green etc
Yep, trading down makes much more sense than chasing Reid. So many options with 2 6 8 11 & 18.

Why are we giving multiple picks to WC?
I really don't understand the notion of dumping our draft hand for Reid.
He's not better than the combined efforts of Mckertcher, Collard and another tall defender. Especially when we're trying to plug holes

North definitely in need of a defender first and foremost.

We actually have more KP depth in defence than we do in the forward line.

Key defenders: Corr, Logue, Pink, Biggie & Dawson.

Key Forwards: Larkey, Comben, CCJ.

We desperately need developing talls alls cross the park.

We need quality not quantity. 2x in defence and 1x in attack (unless Chom rises from the dead).

Edit: at least in the forward line we have enough quality nearby that the need is not so desperate.

If Corr or Logue were playing in a good side then we would call them high quality.

If just one of the experiements work (Comben, Pink, Biggie, Dawson ... Phillips or another rookie?) then we would have 3 quality KPDs and a couple of decent backups.
