Players weights to no longer be disclosed

I’m generally for change and not a “the world’s gone mad!” type, I think, but this is ******* ridiculous. Of course weight is a relevant stat when it comes to match-ups.

There’s not a single overweight player in the AFL and there never will be, it’s not an issue. As if they give a s**t about it being public.

Yep, even the most overweight AFL player is likely fitter than 95% of the population.

yes it is, it's a contact sport where a players physical measurements and abilities need to be known to have any kind of informed analysis on the game.
yes, a players weight is a famously accurate guide to their ability in a contest. That’s why we all respect Rhys Stanley, the hardest man in football

Im sure if you turn that keen analytical mind away from the height and weight columns in the footy record you’ll figure it out.
Nope can't see any point there sorry [emoji52] but cheers anyway

It's a very one-sided debate isn't it!! One side arguing with reasons, the other merely scolding and being cute and smug

Feel free to make your point [emoji117], ie what is so irrelevant about weight and height in AFL that we as fans don't need to know?

I’m still confused on who we’re trying to ‘save’ with not publishing weights. Possible candidates are:

1) the AFLW don’t publish their weight so it would be inconsistent if men’s weights are published so let’s not do that to protect the girls.

2) the overweight man footballer who hasn’t done his training so his weight is higher than average. Oh the shame! We all have to look at his fat guy and pretend he’s as fit as a fiddle.

3) The young recruit 65kgs soaking wet. He’s embarrassed and likely to go into mental meltdown if people know he’s skinny, however, I expect most supporters will give young players a fair bit of slack as understand they will bulk up.

4) Young kid wanting to be AFL footballer that is trying to emulate the physique of footballers. I’m still confused, are footballers a bad example and unhealthy weight?

Which one of the above is the justification from AFL? It’s all a nonsense

What have the AFL actually said about the matter? I haven't looked because it doesn't bother me in the slightest if I don't know what a player weighs.

They said "Unlike gambling, we don't make any money from weights so may as well get rid of them"

Nothing to do with harm or anything obviously

The whole is totally irrelevant - I’ve never relied on information provided by the AFL.

In a game I just have a look - oh they (the opposition) seem to be taller across the ground and then you watch the speed of the players.

You don’t need the weights to get a feel for what is happening on the field.

I find it useful when discussing potential draftees as often the midfielders who are better built at 18 look better against other 18 year olds but have less growth in them in terms of performance since they are relying on being physically bigger and stronger than their opponents in order to look good.

You don't need to know Sam Walsh had 20 kicks, 15 handballs and 12 tackles to get a feel as the whether he had a good game either but more information should always be the goal when looking to build a fan base

To be honest I find it annoying how many stats the AFL keep hidden from us. The AFL own Champion Data as far as I know, they could release all the stats Champion Data collect but for some reason they want us in the dark when it comes to the stats that are genuinely useful.

They sell their more detailed (ie genuinely useful) data to AFL clubs.

Which again makes no sense to me as the AFL is responsible for keeping the clubs financially healthy, so why not simply wear the cost of the stats so the AFL clubs don't need an extra expense.

It is like giving your child $100 for pocket money every week but charging them $100 in rent every week.

Not their weight mate.

If anything clubs should keep that shit quiet so the opposition has less certainty when planning their tactics on game day.

With that logic injuries should never be reported either. The AFL have basically had to force clubs to be a bit more honest with injuries and how long it is going to take for a player to come back.

Whatever happened to Snake Baker? Did he stop following when North didn't rise as he predicted but instead went into abyss mode? Or has he got a new identity?

Laura Kane written all over this, looks like she may be a bust (ooh, am I allowed to use that word?) of Lawrence Angwin proportions
Snake might be a campaigner but he's loyal.

He just got banned.

Clubs have to name a side and then stick to that side unless unknown injuries come up.

But that should be it as far as that stuff goes. Its frustrating for us fans sure but I don't see why clubs or players should have to explain how long they'll be out for.

Players do tests for power to weight, endurance and other stuff that clubs don't release (not talking about time trial pr here either) so should opposition clubs have access to that dat as well as weight? Why one and not the other?

most blocked/muted him, no point in posting to yourself. it's what happens on this forum when politics are intorduced and some hard truths are told. most are snowflakes and melt at the slightest hint of a triggering subject.
Bullshit. He was a rude, weak prick who couldn't stand being questioned or challenged. And he'd just abuse people who didn't agree with him cos he couldn't handle it. He was the biggest snowflake on the board. Well maybe second biggest but anyway who cares now.
