Rumour Jeremy Finlayson under investigation - 3 game suspension

I did travel plenty. My family was and still is prominent in Darwin and NT history.

I could rattle off a bunch of names that were used all the time by those generations though while never hearing the one you claim was common yet never heard by them.

We know what those names are, the ones that were actually commonly said.

Well they were heard by me and on a daily basis. I don’t claim it was common, I know it was common. I can tell you from first hand experience it was used all the time. The C word, the B word and the N word were common place. With all due respect your relatives are wrong.

they should ban anyone who insults another players race or sexuality - for life. Should deter it from happening
Why? It's match day banter.
If anyone said what he said in any other workplace they wouldn't have a job at the end of the day.

Needs to be more than a week i think.

NRL binned a guy for 4 weeks for the exact same word used. I think that would be a good message sent.
Who did Finlayson say it to?

N word not so much. Born and bred in the NT.

An ex team mate of mine used the N word up here. He's Victorian.

He's an ex mate because I called him out on his racist behaviour.

Maybe you hung around a group of hard core racists.

You go around Darwin using the N word in public you won't last long.

And how old are you?

Because if you're hearing it then it's a far more modern thing.

I was talking about "back in the day".

None of my Great Aunts and Uncles were hearing it.

For them they heard the D word the most.

Back in the day in Australia the N word was attributed to all kinds of people, even individual caucasians.

Nah I am hardcore Aboriginal and I was called it on a daily basis. Perhaps you hung around with the right people which is great.

As a Stolen Generation Aboriginal it was used to belittle me regularly. It was used in the Missions, it was used in the Hell Camps, it was used in police stations, in pubs and on football fields. It wasn’t modern. It was used in the 60s, 70s and 80s. Perhaps if you are not being called it, you don’t notice it.

People behave very differently in front of different bystanders.

Do we really want to live in a society where an off the cuff remark is so heavily scrutinised. Really this sort of think has just gone way to far.
I don't think it's being heavily scrutinised as such - we're not looking for deeper meaning or trying to re-interpret what he said. It's just that it's no longer ok to use homosexuality as an insult any more. I don't think it gets more clear cut than that, to be honest.

We do live in that society.

If anyone who works in a half decent workplace called their colleague a F***** they would be likely walked out the door by the end of the day and fired.

AFL players are paid a lot to be scrutinised. Thats the deal. You are on TV with kids watching and are role model's whether you like it or not.

Calling someone a F***** in 2024 is not an off the cuff remark. The NRL has been banning players for over a decade for using this exact word. AFL needs to be better.

If it’s repeated and targeted yeah fair enough. But surely we can accept an off the cuff sledge what ever it may be is not punishable.

It’s an off the cuff remark for some but to others it can have a devastating impact. I will use race as an example. If someone calls a person a white c and they have never been called that before it may not have the same impact as calling someone a black c who was been belittled all their life with such comments.

It again would depend on the context and situation. Let’s not pretend it’s as clear cut as what you posted.

he called someone a homophobic slur. Thats the only context and situation that matters.

it is not acceptable in 2024. Nor has it been acceptable for a long time.

Perhaps if not many people are being called it then it's not common.

As I said it has to be looked at as to the format and situation. Two people going flat out at each other using all sorts of words to try and agitate the other. You can’t then find one word more offensive.

No, I disagree. If it's about certain no-go zones, then we don't accept it - that includes sexuality, race, religion, etc.

I mean, surely anyone can think of at least a couple of things which would not be acceptable, even if said just once.

Yes, Yes you can.

Race, Religion and Sexuality have always been no go zones for sledging as long as microphones have existed.

Every Aboriginal I know was being called it so yes it was common. Someone has given you first hand experience of it being used yet you still refuse to acknowledge. It was commonly used to degrade Aboriginals. .

Getting called the C word?
Getting called a Mother F$&?$$34

Really if not directed as a personal insult does it really hurt.
