Yes. Why should any form of denigration be accepted?
Well, if you want to police literally everything ever said on an AFL field, be my guest. Frankly, that sounds unworkable to me.

For what it's worth, I manage to get through my soccer game every week without calling my opponents names.

Not calling them names throughout a game is how it should be.

There’s some sledging that’s normal and even players would do it to themselves. The game will never eradicate it but this should be a clear warning to players: there are some lines you don’t cross.
It becomes very grey. Be black and white and rule it out

If Finlayson used the "bundle of sticks" (which to me has the same venom as the Hard R because of how I have heard it said) or called someone a Cigarette, then he has breached into the Slur category and away from the insult category. Clarkson was an insult and this case Finlayson was a slur. I think as a society we are looking to remove all slurs from the vocabulary of the population.

I still think that sledging should be allowed on the field but be a bit more inspired with it. Make fun of Dusty for needing Tattoos as a substitute for a personality, tell Toby Greene it is lucky he is good at football because otherwise he would be on NDIS assistance due to his IQ, point out to Bont that he has a big nose and make bird calls each time your near him.

They shouldn't be, but Toump Ass 's point is that it is not on the same level as homophobia, due to the historical (and ongoing mind you) HATE, legal discrimination and violence associated.
Exactly. I have never once in my almost 50 year existence been hated, verbally or physically assaulted, or discriminated against in any facet of my life simply because I'm a 160cm short-arse.

discriminated against in any facet of my life
This part I would dispute, but it would be a more hidden, passive discrimination.

But I'm not here to derail the thread, and I think we agree on the basics here.

Attitudes have changed relatively quickly, I think of some of the comedy albums I have from the nineties and know you wouldn't get away with that now.

I wonder how many of the folks who think not much of this are older and indeed do not work anymore? I recon you only need ten years out of the workforce to have missed a lot of the changes.

Yeah, and he has form.

JF as far as I know - first offence and showed immediate contrition.
Yep. I'd have gone something like Tex 6 (wtf are you doing doing that shit at a SANFL game when you're supposed to be a professional)
Clarko 6 (no explanation required)
JF 3 or 4. Apologised and self reported prior to the game finishing, also player v player doesn't have that "punching down" level of power discrepancy the others have.

What if other bald men don't laugh it off?
Be for ****ing real lol

Homosexuality was outlawed in parts of this country in my lifetime, and I'm under 30. Being bald has been legal for decades, possibly even longer.

Maybe you were just too short to hear everyone talking. Sound waves do dissipate rather quickly through air

Absolutely we did not use it in the way the Americans used it.

We had other far far more common words used towards the Aboriginal population in the way back when.

The N word was not one of them.

I found this - kinda says the N word was widely used. Seems incredible that this was still a stand until very recently.

If you are under 30 then it was only Tassie who still had an issue with Male homosexuality. Sexual activity was legalised and formalised (weird sentence to write) in the Human rights (Sexual Conduct) act of 1994. The Aussie Constitution essentially says that if there is a conflict between a state and Commonwealth (federal law) then the Commonwealth Law is what is applied. Basically the Tassie shit was null and void from 1994. There was also a motion that passed back in the late 70s that decriminalised it as well in private between consenting adults.

It's not illegal now. We should stop slurring/insulting everyone, bald men included.
