We managed to play a BBL bowling line up in the IPL and by virtue of our batting firing once against England we almost made a final

And England didn’t win a game

You should be asking plenty of questions regarding last night’s game. Firstly how did Connolly go from outside the squad to opening in a Semi Final? There’s so many things wrong with that I’m not sure where to start. If JFM was overlooked to open, why was he even in the squad? If tgey needed Connolly as a bowler, why didn’t Smith or Labuschagne move up?

Talent is the most overrated thing in cricket, yet our whole system places it above everything else.

They picked Cooper due to the conditions Short was injured and they wanted an extra spinning option. If short wasn't injured Cooper would not have played.

They didn't go JFM because let's be fair he wouldn't survive more than 4 overs with the stick he is also completely out of his depth this level along with Cooper with the blade.

To be fair for Cooper he did the job with the ball well last night ......he could've gone 8 overs 0/60 and it would have been a complete utter disaster of him but he didn't so credit goes to Cooper there

Cooper was originally picked in the squad for me to get experience ..thats fine we do that heaps with younger players identified who have talent.

The real issue for me is pigeon holing him into an opener which he has never done before in any form of cricket. The only reason why I can see that he opened is that they did not want to upset the middle order. They stated they wanted there best players of spin in the middle order and both Inglis/Carey had just been coming off a 100 plus partnership against the poms. They did not want to upset that dynamic.

Unfortunately it didn't work...as I have stated previously on this thread...I would've gone carey/inglis to open with head and Hardie in the team they didn't do that because the conditions played on there minds a bit ..If this game was in Pakistan where is was supposed to be I reckon we would've seen a different team picked ...bare in mind Sangha played over Johnston due to the conditions which I believe was also a mistake.

But overall we got to the semis with half the team injured or missing we did a good job.

It's a weak era of Australian cricket..has been for 10 to 15 years. In a stronger era of Australian cricket - Connolly doesn't get a look in.

yeah, hindsight is a wonderful thing.

the selectors have got most things right in recent times though.

to be fair JFM wasn't in the original squad.

interestingly enough hardie was in the original squad and didn't get a game.

Usually I'd agree but they have better batsmen than India, they would belt a BBL attack that's what we had this tournament.

Connolly bowled really well, there's something to work with he's not ready but it wasn't some complete howler many are saying on here. Got Rohit, could have easily had Iyer caught at slip (only just went to the right of Smith).

The selection was fine, the mistake was not having a McSweeney type in the squad who could have opened. Then you could have picked CC for a bowler like Johnson

But IMO I will give you some reasons what the selectors are looking for and a weakness in Aussie cricket which hasn't been solved for some time.

If you look at our bowlers ability with the bat quicks and spinners it's not that great since Warne/Johnston has retired we have never had a batter in the late order who can score significant runs with the blade. This is evident in both test cricket and white ball come 8 downwards we struggle

Cummins Starc are handy our two best holding the blade but they are up and down
Lyon has never made a 50 in test cricket
Hazelwood is a good number 11 but thats it

Look at the white ball
Zamps.....one of the reasons he has never played test cricket he is poor with the stick

Look at last night 30-50 runs from he lower order could've been the difference

People are talking about weak spots in the Aussie side well thats one of them...Look at India Ashwin Jadeja Sundar Patel..all spinners ashwin jadeja have made tests tons sundar Patel significant contributions with the bat....thats what I think the selectors are looking for and a reason why Cooper is getting picked.

Yes before you say bowlers are there to take wickets...100% agree but it would be fantastic for the side if we could have a spinner bowler who can bat a bit........If I was Murphy/Rocco in the shield I would really concentrate on the batting side in the nets ...its a weakness for me in the Aussie team both test and whiteball.

Well said Westend the terrible lower order batting has been an issue for years. We used to have Gillespie a good stodgy 9/10, now we are 8 out all out in all forms. When Cummins is batting well it’s rare Starc is.

We badly need a guy at 8 who can genuinely bat, it’s why someone like a Jhye is annoying he can’t stay fit- he can genuinely hold the willow

Not drawing with one of the worst English sides we’ve seen would help this sides rating. It’s an okay to decent side it’s nowhere near great. Been smoked by India away and home (I know we won this summer but about time).

a lot of our failings from my perspective come from the way that the selectors constantly give games to players who aren't performing. you could talk about a lack of pressure coming from the first class scene. Cricket Australia, to my eyes, has far and wide prioritised the growth of the big bash in recent years which has disastrously affected the quality of our red ball cricket across the board. the complete circus that was david warner's retirement tour speaks to this truly. he'd made no significant amount of runs for a good while before he retired. it's a grim comparison, but phil hughes was given a far tougher time in keeping his spot in the team. it was always tumultuous, tedious and up in the air.

i blame george bailey, i'm sure this isn't the exact reason but it entirely appears to me that he'll continue to play favourites until the team is ****ed over. he won't drop his friends. he'll continue to pick them until the team's ****ed.

What world cups? They won one, and it was literally a drawn game... they didn't even win that game in the super over.
