The Hawks are looking better.

But they are still young and there are tougher times ahead.

This may be their year, but nothing is guaranteed.

The relentless moving forward and belief has to stay in each and every one of those players, to be desperate.
Its how the Hawks roll, and they need to remember they a very good, but they haven't reached that unbeatability yet. There is a long way to go. But keep on keeping on.

Carlton, what is wrong there I have no idea. Maybe some bad luck.
Can't get across the line. I don't think they are that bad though.

Its early.
Joon, which players do you think are important?

So the Will Day-less midfield got spanked... Mackenzie and Ward pretty invisible for most of the game too.

I'm taking Carltons midfield regardless of whether the rest of our team is a dogs breakfast atm. Far more depth in that area of the field.
Yikes, imagine a Cripp-less Carlton midfield.

Seen it plenty of times and it held up just fine. Whats the Hawks record without Day of late?

Probably on par with the Bloo's recent record with Cripps in Brownlow form. Shithouse.

Concerning stuff. Given Cripps is a far bigger loss than Will Day it must be a worry that the Hawks midfield seems to get flogged every time he's not out there.

Lack of quality depth clearly.

We didn't do too badly looking at the statistics last night. Actually won the centre clearances. Still getting beat around the ground at stoppage but that's not really troubled us the 4 games prior.

I'm putting the first half down as an aberration. Players coming off a 15 day break and looked physically and mentally switched off. Port got the jump on us and full credit to them. Game of two halves really.

Will be interesting to see how we respond on Easter Monday. Will be a huge match for both clubs (always is) and will be a yard stick to determine if either side is going to be a contender this year.

Only 3 games difference now. Given Carltons easy draw they can easily overtake Hawthorn

Carlton have St Kilda at MCG, Hawks have them at Marvel. Advantage Carlton
Carlton have Gold Coast at Marvel. Hawks have them at Darwin. Advantage Carlton
Carlton have Brisbane at Marvel, Hawks have them at the Gabba. Advantage Carlton

Carlton have a piss easy draw.

2x North
2x West Coast

Can see them finishing around 10-12th. Hopefully will net us a nice top 10 pick.

Port absolutely destroyed Hawks out of the middle in the first half. What happened after that was essentially irrelevant, the game was over. Just like the Blues vs the Lions last year in the Elimination final when they made half a comeback.

If Mackenzie and Ward still aren't capable of performing to the level on ball when they're more than 4th or 5th fiddles the Hawks will struggle. Tag Newk and there's really not much else there.

Not sure what happened with Nash's wrist but at least Hustwaite can come in to play a similar role as another big body. Nobody is replacing Day from that mix though.

It was classic Port, now and then they'll just go out there and play like the best side in history, means nothing in the long term imo

I think I recall Hoyne from CD saying Day is the #1 player in the comp for clearance differential. Not necessarily the guy winning the clearances himself but either stopping the oppo winning one or providing the space for others to shine. Plays that sweeper role at the back of the stoppage better than anyone else in the comp.

We will miss him a lot but I'm not writing our midfield off after a half of footy where only one side decided to show up.

Port were playing full of emotion and intensity. They came out like prime 3peat Brisbane. We've lost maybe 5 games in the last 20 matches or so and 3 of them happen to be against Port. They're our bogey team.

I want to see how we back it up against the Cats before the sky starts falling.

Frig me.

Carlton have won less than 50 of their games over the last 3 years, during which time Cripps has won two Brownlows.

But your midfield has 'held up just fine without him?'

It's all relative, I guess...

Hawks are 0-6 without Day the last 12 months
Blues are 3-1 the last 4 years without Cripps

Just the facts Fadge!

We beat the Dogs in a final without Day just FYI.

Also beat Norf and the Tigers (not that it counts for much) without Day.

I'll have to double check, Llordo and Barrett said the record is 0-6 but perhaps thats a different period they were referring to... Apologies if incorrect!

Technically Day played against the Tiges but he got wiped out in the opening bounce.

We beat North in Round 6 I believe? Beat the Dogs in the EF.

I think we're at a 30% win rate without Day which is not great but isn't too far off a 50% win rate with a Brownlow medalist in the side.

Either way, Hawthorns midfield looks completely different without him in it. A big loss and I don't know how they replace him with the stocks they've got in reserve.

The pursuit of Reid or Butters makes a lot of sense from that perspective.

The pursuit of another X-factor mid has been in the cards for a while regardless of Day's injury status.

Mark Mackenzie and Sam have made their intentions clear that we want to aggressively recruit bookends (we got our defensive pair) and are actively chasing Allen to bolster our forward half.

The other commodity they have been after is an X-factor mid. We were after Baz before we moved on to other targets. It makes sense why we are after Reid. I also wouldn't be surprised if we are getting into Petracca's ear but I feel he will be Collingwood bound.

1-5 is the corrected record Fadge!
Are you sure this time?

Ominous signs for the Hawks if their midfield gets belted by Geelongs this week
Awesome. That will be one less potential premiership contender the Pies will have to worry about - one that frequently hands our proverbials to us on a platter.

That’s a relative best avoided. You wouldn’t invite them to Sunday dinner. :p
