He hasn’t been an absolute star for 14 years, he’s been a good solid player in a largely mediocre team, with a few years where he was better than that, let’s not rewrite history on his career- especially with what he’s actually contributed in the last 18 months.

Plus he isn’t an elite kick - he’s a long kick, and now given he’s lost pace and composure he just dumps it long down the line regardless of what’s ahead of him.
Well I suppose this is where my difference of opinion to most people here comes from. To me he absolutely has been a star for us, top 5 in our team consistently for his whole career.

And at his best he absolutely also was an elite kick. Sure, one of his weapons has been kicking over the oppositions zone, but his ability to hit moving targets on the angle coming out of the defensive 50 was the main reason we made and won finals in 16 and 17. His knee injury in that final in 17 was the main issue the club had in that grand final. We simply couldn’t replicate his defensive transition.

I totally understand people being upset when Murphy or Jones are repeatably selected, as they have never been at anywhere near elite AFL level, however Brodie is one of the very few players we have had that have earned All Australian selection for this club. Anyway regardless of anyone’s views, this particular selection decision will have very little to do with the result tomorrow.

Would have seen him traded end of 2018 really. **** me did we get a terrible return from that contract.
I remember getting slaughtered for suggesting we trade him back then. Still had currency in the market but had proven to be unreliable in big moments. There would have been plenty of suitors. granted, his injury hastened his decline, but there was no doubt 2018 was the time to cash in the chips.

His first half of 2017 was elite, but then he got targeted with the tag and never hit that level again, then the injuries came.

But yeah, like Jenkins before him, we didn't sell when the value was high.

That's another area where the Hawks are light years ahead of us, they move their senior players on to get trade/draft capital and to free up list spots.

We hold onto senior players for dear life squeezing the last drop out of them as their performances fall well below AFL standard making it much harder for younger players to come in.

Lynch too. We could have got right into the top 5 of that very good draft.

It's a mentality carried over from the Neil Craig "I dont like trading" days. Our list management has always sucked.

I don't think the club could countenance the idea of losing Sloane after already losing Dangerfield. There was already that general perception of us being unable to keep interstate recruits.

I think he was a free agent anyway, so unless we matched then we would have just got the compensation pick for him. Even so, in that draft that might have enabled us to get Zak Butters to go with our pick of Chayce Jones. Although more likely we'd have gone with Jackson Hately.

If only our younger players had a "positive attitude".....apparently that is a major requirement for AFC team selection. You know what, I would prefer someone with a cr*p attitude who doesnt want to play in the 2nds, but you know...can kick the ball and not get run down by a pensioner....

“In what has been a decorated career, what has impressed greatly in recent times has been Brodie’s commitment and attitude whilst not in the AFL team. His positive approach has had him well placed for AFL selection and it will be great to see the No.33 out there Saturday.”

This. Like, wtf didnt we trade Laird end of last year? Guy doesnt seem overly liked by his team mates, has SOME trade currency, and could have been replaced by the likes of Bond or Taylor in the role he plays...

So you don’t watch our games?

He has not been the same since he did his ACL in 2017. And the last year he was hopeless.

Lets understand one thing, he is a like for like replacement for Hinge. Lets see what happens at selection for next week. He should be out next week once Hinge serves his suspension. Lets see if that holds true.

We've been so terrified of guys leaving that anyone who wants to stay we cling on to them, even if it's way past their used by date. Maybe the scars of Tippett there where we were so scared we willingly drew up an illegal contract rather than lose a guy.

Hopefully with us being able to recruit Dawson, Rankine, Peatling, Cumming etc we will maybe be a bit more proactive on team turnover and not be so afraid that we won't be able to bring anyone in to replace them.

Sorta like with how he's picking Milera, it's on traits rather than actual results. By traits Smith may be a replacement for Hinge, but the actual results of what they'll be capable of putting out on the field are way different.

Is this his quote from a press conference?

Not that I've thought about it that much but who on our list would you currently say is "theoretically overpriced"?
What's Rankine being paid? His best is amazing, but how often are we getting his best? Though possibly more to do with how we are using him, poorly.

Perhaps we are doing a bit better on that front, though more likely it is our list profile that doesn't have us overpaying at the moment.

I’m actually not against blooding Edwards personally, but suggesting Smith wouldn’t be a better option at this stage of their careers is crazy. Smith has been an absolute star of the comp for 14 years,

He has been a good player who has played lots of games but he isn't a star.

One All Australian and no B&F''s is all you need to know. In fact not sure he has ever been top three in our B&F? Someone will know.

Lets hope so.
Giving Nicks plenty of rope
"if your enemy is making a mistake, do not interrupt him" - Sun Tzu Murray Davis

Knowing what Adelaide is like though, Davis is just as clueless as Nicks and we managed to recruit the one bloke in Brisbane's coaching panel that was riding the coattails of others.
