Review Cats hang on by 3 points to beat Pies

Apart from the legging and the inclusive touch what are the bad frees that the pies had to suffer through? I didn’t think anything particularly stuck out - more that frees got paid to both sides that were there

I think King said we got something like 13 of the last 15 frees. To my eye, that was driven more by us getting to the ball first and running out the game better.

Only downer for the whole night was the lack of composure in the last three or so minutes. Genuinely horrible footy it was. Maybe the Pies didn’t allow them any space, fatigue no doubt played a part, but they did not even attempt to play keeping’s off late in the game. Six six six obviously contributed to the result, the league hit the jackpot with new rule a few years ago.
Credit to the maggies - they really new what they were doing in those last three minutes - it wasn't just bomb it long and hope. We were like deer in a spotlight. We dodged a bullet, but we are rather good at dodging bullets, it's not just luck.

One of those guys who proclaimed our success was over in about 2010, and has had a monumental chip on his shoulder about us ever since.
Lol - his prediction back then was that North would win a flag before Geelong would win another

Good fight back from mid 3rd quarter to late in the 4th. It was a bit disappointing that, when it seemed we'd gained ascendancy and momentum, we seemed to slack off. It was amazing that we didn't have players back to negate the final forward entry. Our defence overall was so slack in the last five minutes.
There were plenty of players down there, they were just deeper. Sidebottom's kick dropped short and it was Zuthrie v 6 Pies.

If Crisp kicked that, it would have been one of the moments of the decade. He really let himself down with that. It would have been a memory of a lifetime.

They would have talked about that play by play, not just at Collingwood (like how Geelong talk about the Hawkins one), but the entire AFL.

Lucky for us.
His interview after the game was all class. I've never really seen him speak much in the past. He actually seems like a really good bloke. I kinda feel sorry for him if I take my Geelong hat off.

At the end of the day, he wasn't good enough to execute, so that's all that matters. It wasn't to be for him. Well done on his achievement, though. 245 games in a row is bloody incredible.

Have watched the last few mins a couple of times now and I still think the HTB against Blicavs was rough. I can't imagine they would have been paid at any other point of the game except in the dying seconds, with the crowd roaring and the Pies desperate to get it forward.

I didn't really appreciate how much our draw opens up after the next couple of weeks. Tons of home games, and fixtures against teams we'd be expected to beat.

This is the hard part of our draw and we're 5-3. With a bunch of blokes injured and a fair chunk of our side still sub-50 games.

Not a bad place to be.

The start to this year was always critical.

Look at it this way. We haven't played a team in the bottom 4 yet. Gold Coast have played all 4....

It was smart by them to be honest. Any other time of the game he would have been tackled by 3 guys there. I think it is actually the new interpretation of if you have an arm free and don't get rid of it you are gone. To me that is opening up players to get injured in the tackle as you often see the tackler just grabbing an arm and yanking it as hard as they can now.

Have to agree
Several arm pinned ball ups throughout the last quarter

The game descended into an absolute street fight and I was thinking how well both sides were tackling
Not giving an inch

Well I think it's an interesting discussion. It seems Cameron was rewarded and being called smart for essentially not tackling Blicavs, but if he didn't tackle him then how can you pay holding the ball. I'd argue Blitz is allowed to stand there and hold the ball close to Cameron all day if he wants to. In the end Blitz probably should've just got rid of it.

Nah he held it in, yes he had an arm pinned but he could have attempted to kick, i dont know why he grabbed it to be honest, he had 2 cats in front of him he could have tapped it to and that would have been that.

Cracking win!

I weirdly felt confident all night because it felt like the Pies were well on top for the middle part of the game but we were staying with them. Real credit to the boys for not letting the game get away and then to take their opportunities when they had the momentum.

Dangerfield is an all time great, how he has been underrated by anyone has always shocked me. Transformed this footy club back to a contender when he arrived in 2016 and now, after a tough transition from Selwood in 2023, He has really found his way to captain and he is an absolute inspiration to his teammates, almost literally carries them on his back.

No real breakout games from the under 50 gamers but they all had moments. Wiltshire's goal was beautiful, just give O'Sullivan the rising star already, I'm a big fan of Mullin and seeing him completely blanket Daicos in the last and frustrate him into giving away a 50m (30m) penalty was fantastic. Neale is having moments, I feel like a big game is coming, maybe against a minnow he can have a big game and gain confidence. This is why you don't drop O Henry.

Jhye Clark will be a player, he's very smart with the way he reads the play, a genuine footballer, he had some really important moments tonight. He's just got to grow into the mans game and he will. Tom Atkins was nearly 24 when he debuted and took a few years to really find his place. Jhye is 20.

Still want to see Holmes and Dempsey give 4 quarters, they're both so damaging when they have the ball in hand.

Baz is so good. Loved him at the dogs and always hoped somehow he's get traded to us. Just an absolute Maniac.

Pies are a very good side and with their list profile, exist to win now, they have so much experience and that's why it never felt like the game was put away in the last. Great learning for the younger players to experience that and still come away from the win. They'll be onto an easy goal square mark like that in future. And Blitz should've kicked that ball and we would've been fine, HTB every day of the week.

Media needs clicks and fans need things to hold onto, that's why there is always too much chat about things that happen in the last 5 min of a close game. But if we look at the game as a sum of all its parts, there were many moments for each team that could have won it and in the end, Geelong took more of them.

Great win, we are truly blessed to follow this football club, even though we'll have a bad loss to a team like Carlton, I always feel that we'll be alright. Because that's what Geelong has created, there is no better club to follow.

I think there was a little hold of the jumper on Bowes form Elliott maybe?

And the soft in the back to Neale from Moore

10 individual goal scorers with only 1 from Jez is also a great sign of how well our scoring power is spread
Great to see Ollie Henry really take his chances tonight and Mannagh is just a big moment player around goal

All of King, Dunstall, Lyon and Jack Riewoldt making an embarrassment of themselves as usual on live TV is the perfect way to savour a gutsy Geelong win. That was as one-sided barracking as you could get from a bunch of flogs.
I get its their job to try and stir up controversy to keep their jobs interesting. But yeah... embarrassing stuff.

Just watched the game. Mixed feeling, feel like if we were to play that game a few bunch of times, we don't win too many of them. Collingwood's forward efficiency was shit for all but the last 4 minutes.

Truth be told we were lucky to be in it, then we almost blew it. We can't base our season's fortunes on Dangerfield doing that week in week out. We did plenty right and plenty wrong.

Pushed Stanley for one week too many, and we'll have to cop that loss for a bit now. Duncan was really rusty, but still adds something. His positioning is still there. Mullin played such an old fashioned role on Daicos, Daicos was pissed. Neale just does things that gives me confidence that he'll make it. O'Connor has hit a sneaky purple patch down back.

In the end it is a great win when so much of what we are is still misfiring. Banking these types of wins help make a season.
We're so compact on defense for much of the game, letting the opposition run wild with the space almost wondering if we're doing it deliberately to tire them out.

Is there any other player in the AFL like Dangerfield at the moment? You rarely see someone hunt the footy, hit the contest like a freight train and look like such a dominant beast. Much respect to the man, he really loves the game.
At the moment or ever? We had Selwood doing it but Danger is twice as big. Pies defenders were looking over their shoulders for him in the last quarter last night, haven’t seen that for a long time, and not sure I’ve ever seen that for a fair player. Reminiscent of the Lockett Ablett days.
