what happens to that cap room if Duncan, CGuth, Stanley and Bews all go?

Would think that from that group, Guthrie would be the only one on significant money this year

Obviously the other 3 aren't playing for nothing, but not sure those 3 would make any major shift in our salary cap room if they aren't on the list in 2026

On a side note. I wasn't on BF in 2017. Why was Daniel Menzel delisted after Cats sticking with him all those years. He actually had a pretty good amount of Goals on return from injury. Was it pretty firey on here? Wouldn't of thought we had anyone better to replace him at the time. And he was only 26.
Menzel did have some great games in that last stretch and almost always knew how to find the scoreboard. 40 goals in 2017!

The knocks on him were that he offered nothing defensively, couldn't move well and in 2018 his body looked like it was breaking down. Didn't really create much for team mates. Plus we had Rohan coming in.

Menzel went to Sydney and things fizzled out quickly after that. Could've been anything if his body let him have a good run at it.

Collingwood are about to bottom out. Hard.

They have no decent youth coming through except daicos. They are in real trouble when it hits it will hit hard.

Not doubting your intuition but that sort of sounds a bit like the death knell that was rung out on us year after year.

Imo.. they have such a aspirational organisation add having someone like ND and his brother that they will continue to be able to grab some FA types that want to play for them. The pressure is probably on to find some bargains as we have ..and to blend new and old a bit more. Can they find a couple more of the Ned Long types? ..and can one of their NGA’s this year become another bargain for them.

Logic says what goes up has to come down. For them For us. Other clubs have been saying that about us for years..and sooner or later it probably will happen. We are reliant on a match winner like Danger to seperate us atm what happens when he is gone. probably explains why some have been linking us to high end name trades.

He's an UFA - can make the move all on his own if he so chooses

If he did..id prognosticate that the Dogs would be full of sickening puffy feelgood axioms ..they would wrap their arms around him and announce to all and sundry that he would always be a Dogs champ etc. and he has earned the right to do what he wants..

For a while it seemed like one of best goal kickers was being moved on each year .. SJ and Chappy …. I think CS wanted more entrapment and less pressure drop off

Hawks have more cap room than us. They can outbid for worpel if they want.
If they aren't offering him more it means they have a high value trade target lined up.
Do they?

They have a bucket load of me me me players that will be seeking more money very soon.

For what it's worth friend of mine had spoken with Zak Butters dad who had said he's coming to the Cats straight from the horses mouth

Let’s say both Reid and Butters stay at their clubs next year. I don’t image we could bring both in at once at the end of 2026, from trade assets and/or salary (Port will match). Now it would be a great problem to have if they both picked Geelong. We can dream hey!

Long way to go, but if we land Worpel, one of Reid/Butters, Conway holds up, then we have all bases covered for a sustained run. The only hole is someone to replace Jezza in a few years.

The best way to deter Port from matching is to simply not have any desirable picks to be able to trade should they opt to match

If a trade for Reid was able to be agreed to this year then that makes part of the task of chasing Butters slightly easier as we simply won't have the picks going into next years trade period

If there's no trade for Reid this year we can still make that move next year, but need to work it in the right order
  • hold back from lodging early paperwork for Butters as a FA
  • have already been negotiating with WCE and an agreement in place so that paperwork for a Reid deal can be lodged on the first day or two of the trade period
  • once a trade for Reid is confirmed, then lodge FA paperwork for Butters

That's all on the proviso that next years trade period will work the same as this year's with the trade dates starting before the FA lodgement period closes:
Fri Oct 3 - Fri Oct 10: 2025 Free Agency Period
Mon Oct 6 - Wed Oct 15: 2025 Continental Tyres AFL Trade Period

I think if we don't land Reid this year it'll mean we don't get butters. That's why i think they'll throw everything not nailed down at Reid.

3x firsts and 2x seconds? Take 'em. Jhye Clark and Mitch Knevitt? Both yours if you throw in TK.

We can’t get Reid and Butters end of this season so one of them are gonna have to be patient and wait til end of next season. We do the honourable thing and bring Harley home first imo get him out of that rabble asap
I reckon we can get Reid this year. We'll make the same offer we would make next year, it won't improve. It actually would go backwards because any future seconds or pick swaps for 2027 start to get impacted by the tassie draft. Better to get the picks now if the draft hand doesn't change significantly.

I can see it being something like:

Geelong out:
  • 2025, first round & second round
  • 2026, first round & second round
  • 2027, first round
  • Potential fringe player open to moving but that could change the picks involved

WCE out:
  • Reid
  • 2025, third round
  • 2026, third round

If we can get a couple of picks back, especially third round picks, it can somewhat soften the blow of giving up picked in the first couple of rounds across multiple years, as there may not be that much difference between our second round pick and WCEs third round pick - but it's a move that looks a win on paper for WCE

That's basically the trade i have in my head

Also, am I the only one who wants TK to come home tacked onto the back of the trade?

I'm not normally one for wanting to go crazy in terms of too much trade currency being used in a single deal for one player

But sometimes you've got to make an exception and then look at the bigger picture

The other bonus is it will shut up those who keep suggesting we trade a first to Melbourne for Oliver...
