The Liberal Party - How long? - Part 2

Reports of the Liberal Party's death were greatly exaggerated in May 2022. I was hoping that was the death-knell.

Fast forward two-and-a-half-years, and it looked to be in a position to form government at the beginning of 2025. Fast forward another four months, and the cold hard results are even more dire than last election. The party is losing critical mass and has been virtually smoked out of the cities.

The Liberal Party may not be dead or even dying, but it sure as hell has cancer.
I’d say the Liberal Party in its current MAGA-driven form IS cancer.

I’d say the Liberal Party in its current MAGA-driven form IS cancer.
It is, but it is a benign cancer. In the US a massive part of any campaign is just simply to get people to vote and to do that, they really push hard on the emotional front, angry motivated people are far more likely to vote than people's whose life is going along comfortably. So the Republicans push that hard - building a burning inferno that motivates the angry to vote and demotivates the comfortable from voting. Here though, thanks to compulsory voting, that just doesn't work, there are certain those who swallow the rhetoric who are angry, but there are far more who are just comfortable and see no reason to vote for the angry party. So while the Libs are cancerous, I really cant see it spreading.

The export of education should only serve as a means of educating our own kids for free.
WTF? Export of education is a business that goes to the general revenue of the country profits all of Australia and has much to do the (noble) principal of free education for all australian kids as it does with the argument that Collingwood get too many games at the G.

Education should be free. China, Sweden, Finland etc educate the best and brightest of their kids, we educate rich average kids.

Absolutely.

We’re one of the richest nations in the world, in the richest period in human history.

At least two dozen other nations, from dirt poor developing to technologically advanced and highly prosperous, manage to achieve free tertiary education.

It’s just horseshit to say Australia can’t afford it.
We can’t afford not to.

Not many private schools in Finland either I believe. Operate under direct public supervision.
Has some of the best educational outcomes in the world with quality teachers well paid and highly regarded.

Exactly. It's an investment which pays off many times the outlay.
I just look at China and the research and innovation that’s coming out of that place.

They are a goddamned juggernaut.

They educate every kid with brains as far as they are capable of going - the ones who come out here are often the rich kids who were too dumb to get into a Chinese uni

Meanwhile America does everything it possibly can to dumb a huge percentage of its population down so they can control it and milk it.

The US has lost and they did it to themselves..

Yeah sure, but FREEDOM! 😆

You know you're in trouble as the new leader of the Liberals when your media allies (ie Sky News 'After Dark') refuses to give you full backing which is happening to Sussan Ley right now. When Parliament resumes after the election, Ley will be under heavy scrutiny, especially at the first Question Time. Watch for the backbenchers sitting behind her while QT is on, sharpening the knives and waiting for Ley to stuff it up.

So gratifying to see them eating their own.

Education is a capital good; you use it to create other goods.

Commodifying it has just driven up living costs while suppressing wages (more competition for housing/jobs).

Also, I'm not certain that our citizenry have benefited from this approach. Our education system isn't in the sorry state as the American one, but it is barely competitive.

They are the Dutton dressed up as lambs party.

A moderate leader that’s no more than window dressing for RWNJ’s

I just don't for a second consider Ley to be a moderate. Perhaps slightly less of a NJ than others in the Coalition, but I'm not even sure that is true.

This sort of churlishness isn't going to help them.
Same old Libs. Hack, slash and burn.

The Nats want to enshrine Nuclear Energy in the agreement with the Libs. Are farmers that keen on nuclear energy?
It was idiotic policy in the first place because it is simply not needed in Oz. It's double idiocy because it is unpopular in the electorate.
The farmers aren't. The miners are.

Net Zero will continue to rip the coalition apart

Let's be honest what the so called nuclear energy was about
It was never ever going to be implemented. Nuclear is code in the Conservatives tent for continuing with coal and gas and putting the brakes on renewables

Its one of the most cynical "policies" in recent history

spot on. grow some and stand up to those who see more culture wars as the way forward. it will take fortitude bc the rwnj’s have the newscoprse megaphone.
